“Till all are one!” Really well done, Michael! Optimus has often been compared to John Wayne, but he’s so much more than that. I always liked how he was portrayed as a wise leader. The perfect antithesis to Megatron.
Thanks! There's a definite John Wayne vibe in the early episodes, but I don't think the Duke would ever surrender or retreat as willingly as Prime often did. If the Duke was a Transformer, his name might have been "Roostermus Pride." :D
I had a father but he wasn't a very good one. Optimus was my substitute father and I saw myself in Hot Rod becoming Rodimus when I became an adult and father myself.
@@williamhays7356 It would be awesome if OP didn't died in the 1986 movie and had a somewhat like a father to Rodimus. He could put Rodimus in line. Rodimus: But I don't wanna Optimus: Oh yes you do *dragging Rodimus Prime*
He was a father figure to all of us. I'm sure. Nice to hear you became a truck driver. That's no coincidence.. and I bet you're a good one too. A good guy.. Roll out! and Roll On..
The way you speak about Optimus Prime is nothing less than inspiring. Your love of him is incredibly clear and honest; and to be honest, your summary of him at the beginning of the video brought tears to my eyes with how much he has meant to you. He has meant a lot to me too. Thank you for the review and please keep up the great work. Your videos have reignited the passion that I have for collecting over the past few months since I have found your channel. It had kinda grown stagnant over the last couple of years. I am reorganizing a rack that my father built for me to hold shot glasses (when I use to drink a lot) into an 80's toy shelf (since I don't drink like that anymore) as I am watching your videos. Thank you again. Have a great weekend.
Thanks! I'm saddened by the number of Transformers fans who didn't resonate with his values. I tend to steer clear of that fandom because of number of people who behave more like Megatron than Optimus. So nice to see such an overwhelming response of positivity to this video. I truly expected quite the opposite. Glad to hear your passion has been reignited and that you no longer drink. A major reason why I have all of these things is I've never smoked, drank or used drugs. Hope the extra money helps you build a great collection. :D
Great words of passion and inspiration in this video, man. Couldnt have said it better myself and i wholeheartedly agree with what you said. His values and spirit were certainly things to live up to. Optimus Prime was my childhood hero and i too was lucky enough to have parents who bought me the original toy. I have it proudly sitting on a shelf amongst other transformers and collectible items. Next to that i also own a modern Masterpiece Optimus Prime. Great video and thank you. Transform and roll out!
The whole time I was watching this video I kept thinking, "Yeah... this guy gets it." Just everything, from Optimus Prime's personality to why he's so important to me, and to many of us from that era. What a well articulated and heartfelt video. Thanks, man. I'm gonna keep this one bookmarked to show people when they ask me about why Optimus is so important to a guy like me in his 40's. Quick side note, I got in trouble back in 1997 for a paper I wrote in my Sophomore English class. We were supposed to write on who is our Hero. I wrote about Optimus Prime. The teacher gave me half-credit simply because I wrote about a cartoon character. I politely went to her desk, argued about her instructions which never said it couldn't be a fictional character and she had no justification to give me half credit considering my subject was indeed a hero. She yelled at me in front of the class, said I never listened, to which I rebuttled that I did indeed listen and she never said it couldn't be about fictional character, whether he's a cartoon, toy, or whatever. The class began to agree with me and argue with her as well. It turns out other kids had also gotten half credit for the same reason, even though we had followed her initial instructions. She never did relent, or apologize, or change our grades. But in my yearbook one of my classmates wrote to me that I was his hero because I stood up to our teacher for a just cause. I was simply trying to be like Optimus. Anyway, great video. I agree with you on all counts. Thanks for this.
Optimus was my dad. not literally or figuratively so much but he embodied all the traits my dad tried to instill in me. Honor, loyalty, responsibility, duty, kindness, but with the strength to stand up for what you believe to be right. to never falter and never give up. It didn't hurt that my dad drove a cab-over semi too. So yeah when a 4 year old Logan who idolized his dad first set eyes on the Transformers, it was only natural that Optimus Prime would stand apart as the one I would attach myself to.
Same here Logan, he has all of the traits of my dad, and grandpa (God rest him.) when I told my dad this he started tearing up. (In a good way of course.)
For many years I thought that I was the only one who felt that way. He was and always will be bigger than just a toy or fictional character...he's an inspiration in my opinion that is unparalleled. Thank you for this video my friend, best wishes !!!
I remember the day I went shopping with my Grandma and she bought me Optimus. He was $20.. quite expensive for us at that time so I can relate to how things were for your family.. maybe a little. My Optimus was the version with the blue Roller. I always thought it was odd that there were seats for people but never saw any.. now I know why. Optimus was always a hero of mine too but you can imagine my surprise when I started taking kickboxing lessons and when it was time to spar with the instructor, he played “The Touch” from Transformers:The Movie. Optimus was his favorite too 🤓😎 I saw a video of Peter telling that story of how his late brother had inspired Optimus’s voice. I started tearing up when he did. It explained everything.
Optimus Prime was/is my hero. Growing up, I was an introverted fat kid with little to no friends. My dad was an alcoholic and wasn't there for us emotionally. Everything good and honorable I learned and project out to the world today, I learned from Optimus Prime. Watching you review brought back a flood of memories and emotions. It even brought a little tear to my eye; I emphasize completely. "'Until all are one."
That's what was so great about cartoons from the 80's and early 90's, they had a message about being the better person and that has followed those of us who took those lessons to heart.
The scene from 2007 Transformers: The Movie and epic score when Autobots arrive, then finally watching Optimus transform live and say in Peter Culllen's voice "I am Optimus Prime" still gives me goosebumps! One of the few next Gen films to tap into my 80's love and hero archetype.
I loved that scene too, and the musical score piece titled "Optimus Prime" from that soundtrack perfectly captures the spirit of Prime; a peaceful warrior. I'm glad I was able to enjoy at least 1 live action Transformers movie. :D
Michael Mercy they definitely deviated from that great film in the following sequels and went off the rails of sorts. I kinda get figuratively misty eyed when my young nephews come over and see their archetypes for heroes(the flawed Ironman, Deadpool, Wolverine, etc) and see them light up when I show, and better yet, explain my collection of my iconic 80's heroes collection(Optimus, He-man, Liono, Luke Skywalker, Superman, etc). It's like an awakening in their eyes on the lines of "what? I can be like that!". Because for the most part that message hasn't been reinforced through the same medium you and I grew up on. There's this great scene in Superman Returns when Superman takes Lois up in the sky and says "What do you hear?". She responds "Nothing", and Superman goes onto reply "I hear everything............You said the world doesn't need a Savior, yet everyday I hear them crying out for one.". I think for me that scene really resonates with the theme of this video and Optimus' ascended approach to being a hero. You may have a smaller TH-cam channel, but what you are doing is keeping thay spark going that in time, can ignite into a big fire. Great job as always
Or "We will kill them all." Took me a while to realize that just because Peter Cullen was still doing the voice, that didn't mean it was still *my* Optimus Prime. :D
Transformers 1's Optimus Prime is still the wise, brave, selfless Autobot we all know and loved. *_Until the second movie came in everything was fine._*
That's a great thing about Optimus, he sometimes made a bad call, but he never did it from self preservation, ego, or the easiest solution. He based his ideals on trying to protect as many as he could.
Beautifully put. Sometimes doing the right thing means losing, surrendering, or retreating, which Prime never had trouble doing if it was for the greater good or to save lives.
I'm only 13 and I'll be 14 tomorrow but I grew up with the original transformers show (CD`s) and the tf animated and Michael bay toys and as I was growing up opti us prime was my favorite character and it wasn't because he was the leader it was because he was also my hero he for the right thing no matter what even risking his own life for freedom he wasn't just a toy or a truck or a leader or an alien robot he was a symbol of hope and a bringer of peace
Father to all us 80s kids. My dad died when I was very young. Optimus was more real then most things in my life. Thank you for the words I could never get out.
As a kid in the 80's who lived through some very difficult childhood, Optimus prime was always first and foremost, the greatest inspirational, hero who always managed to lift me up (figuratively speaking) & always managed to light my darkest hours. (He's the REAL reason why I'm still alive today after all those years because believe it or not, things got so bad at one point in 1984 that I actually thought about committing suicide...until I hear some few positive/inspirational message from Prime in the cartoon. So it's not really an exaggeration to say that he actually saved my life!)
I am so happy that you are here today to tell your story. It is truly amazing that one character could do that through just a few words. He definitely did save your life, I believe that!
that speech was.. beautiful. Hasbro is destructing optimus' personality. he's not a murderer leader. or a quiet truck. he is the one every transformers fan loves. he will be the autobot leader in our hearts forever. i lost my Optimus 3 years ago. i want to buy him again. but it will never replace the one i lost...
I think that's not Hasbro's fault, is Michael Bay's fault, his movies are nothing compared to the G1, Me Michael Bay never knowed what Optimus Prime meaned to all of us
Hasbro, especially through Bayverse, is not going so well with writing Optimus Prime as a character, that"s for sure! But I think (and this is just my opinion), that they are getting better! ROTB definitely showed improvement from the past few movies (not including Bumblebee)! Lets just hope for the best!!!
I got my Optimus for Christmas when I was six years old. I'd had an ear infection for almost a week, but woke up that morning with no pain, no congestion, and the best Autobot under the tree. I don't think he had quite the impact on me as he had on you, but he was definitely the epitome of leadership and a mainstay in my countless immersions into make-believe. --Your adoration of him does beg the question though: How did you deal with his death in Transformers: The Movie? I remember seeing the trailer as kid, hearing the narrator ask, "Will Prime die?!" I turned to my dad, shaking my head and smiling. "He can't die! He's the leader. They'll never kill him!" Not long after, I was watching the silver screen in disbelief as the mournful soundtrack marked Prime's last (ostensibly) moments. I cried. I distinctly recall crying. Not sure how my dad handled the situation, because I did see the rest of the movie. Maybe it was stifled or something. That said, I can't imagine how that must have hit you. It was a cruel thing to subject young viewers to--crueler still when I later realized it was all done to issue in a new line of toys. Though I would agree that contemporary Prime barely retains the essence of the cartoon, he has managed to say a few lines that stick with me. I'm sure it was ripped off from somewhere else, but the line, "Fate rarely calls upon us at a time of our choosing" is pretty damn insightful, and is fitting of OG Prime's wisdom. Thanks for sharing!
Dude, I have always thought I was silly or crazy for having Optimus prime as a hero, a moral compass. This video was amazing and it’s good to know there is somebody out there that shares my thoughts .
I didn't introduced to Transformers till around the age of 15. Around that time, my mental health was scrap and it still kind of is. When things seemed out of my control and overwhelming, Prime was and is the character who I clung to; whose words inspired me to keep going and stay strong. To that I say, thank you Optimus Prime! 😊
I didn’t grow up in the 80s, but my grandma had some old tapes of cartoons from the 50s to maybe the 90s, and some were of Transformers! I remember loving Optimus when watching those. I grew more up with Transformers Prime, but I loved him there too! He took the role of the serious one, so no one else had too. He was a father figure to the Autobots, and viewed them more as family then just allies. I loved how he acted as a little kid, still do to this day! I did get a non transforming toy of him when I was 7 years old I think. I still have it, but it’s very scratched up, but the joints are still tight! This video just made me think of how much I really love Optimus, even though Galvatron will still be my favorite for his design, and his comical insanity in season 3 of G1!
I didn’t grow up with the original series, but my father did he gave me some of his toys, so I might not have a Optimus Prime but I have the image of him and his ideals in my mind and that’s all I need.
Sadly I don't have any of my original toys...sold the last of them (my TMNT figures and Swamp Thing figures) about 5 or 6 years ago...but I started collecting Transformers again last year and die cast vehicles this year (2 of my all time favorite toys)...maybe eventually they'll bring back Masters of the Universe (another favorite toy line of mine).
That was amazing Michael!!! Almost made me cry... ALMOST!!! :) I feel exactly the same way about Prime. I owe a lot to Prime for the way I act in the world. He was the best role model!
Well, this is simply one of my favourites TH-cam videos of all time. It had me misty eyed several times and took me right back to my childhood and my love for Optimus Prime, waiting months to get him for my fifth birthday (both my parents took a day off work to scour toys stores for 50miles to find him) and then treasuring him. I also remember crying my eyes out when he died in the movie and racing home to get hold of him. He still sits on a shelf close to my bed and I see him every day. I’m nearly 40 and will treasure him forever. However, I’d probably forgotten how much of a values based leader he is, and what a leadership role model he is. You’ve inspired me to rewatch the show. A sincere thank you Michael, for all of the effort and love you’ve put into this video and many others. Your sentiments, approach and delivery are all top class.
Laser Optimus was my first Prime I had, it was a gift from my late aunt. I can say for sure that she had to be the main reason(and my brother) that I got sucked into the world of Transformers. Just about every spin off since I have always made it my duty to always get the Optimus Prime of said story, my favorite Toys of him being Optimus Primal from Beast Wars and Optimus Prime from Armada(heck I had both versions of that one too) Currently my most prized piece is the MP Optimus that I snagged for a good price at a Toys R Us about 2 hours away from my home. It was by mistake too cause I wasn’t expecting to even FIND a Masterpiece Optimus Prime there, man oh man I swooped him off the shelf right away, regrettably I didn’t have enough money and I wasn’t going to be paid till the NEXT DAY!...so I did the logical, placed him on Layaway, drove home, got some rest and drove 2 hours back the next day to get him. I swear he was testing my patience too cause they actually misplaced him and took a good while to finally find him somewhere in the back crammed in the corner in some sack. It was well worth the wait though, he now stands proudly on my shelf dead center of my collection of various other figures I’ve bought over the years. I am looking forward to maybe gettin a hold of a Laser Optimus Prime sometime just in memory of both my aunt since I long lost my original figure. Maybe it’ll be quite the adventure like it was with my MP Prime What else can I say, prime is just the hero of all heroes when it comes down to it for me, he reminds me of my loved ones such as my aunt and also my father. He Never gives up and always holding strong to hope even when the odds are stacked against him. I guess I can say that is the reason I always been optimistic, after all every obstacle that life throws at you has a way to over come it, it might be easy it might be difficult but it can be overcome.
This is by far the most inspiring video you have come up with. And what an appropriate character ( Optimus Prime, of course) to use to model and inspire this video contents too. Full of substance and moral. Just like the man himself. I especially love it when you connect and relate all of Optimus's prime features and characteristics with the morals and honours of life that one should follow in order to be truly honest, sincere and righteous not hypocritical , deceptive and egomaniac. Well done man. Keep it up! Always nice to see a lot of zest and peace in your videos.
I don't think I've ever watched a video that so perfectly mirrors my feelings about something from my childhood. I've never forgotten the lessons I learned growing up with Optimus Prime as my hero. It was amazing how similar our stories are along with our admiration for Optimus. Thank you so much for making this video.
The best tribute for Optimus Prime, his character is in his name, "Positive first." What an inspirational video. I am 50 years old and society today is at a loss to see, think, or say anything like this anymore. Prime was my hero too growing up in a time when having mercy, humility, forgiveness, morality, and respect was a way of life. Thank You for making this AWESOME tribute to a hero that still lives in us!!
Wow...i have been watching your videos for awhile now but just found this one today. Optimus Prime for me was many things...a hero, a father figure, comfort, safety, and a teacher. Your video moved me to tears and I'm sincerely grateful you made it, thank you. Optimus saved my life and it's always wonderful to see how he's been a positive influence on someone else. Till all are one🙏
I'm 45 and this one hit me right in the feels brother. Thanks so much. You have a wonderful way of putting into words how many of us feel about this huge piece of our childhoods and something that helped mold us into the people we are today.
Once again Big Mike you amaze and entertain us with yet another stellar video offering. What Optimus means to me, well its a little embarrassing- he was my father figure...I never knew, met, or even heard from my biological father, still have not to this day. Optimus for me was RoboJesus, Abe Lincoln, and the wise & brave Native chief...I know he's often referred as Superman but I think thats a tad too simplified. Yes i love sups' but Prime was something else, special, gentle, brave beyond measure, and above all else selfless and rightegeous. My private school use to send home guides about what toys, music, comics books, and tv parents ought to support us kids in taking part in. That reinforced our churchs' values of kindness and acceptance. Optimus, Thundercats, GI Joe,He-man/Bravestarr, and Peanuts were really pushed and supported because of their diverse and honest practical life lessons. For me he still Is all those things, Im just dissapointed the mass global public outside the fandom never gets to see those honorable traits onscreen in the M-Bayformerverse. Rescuebots does a "decent enuff" job of presenting core values, but since the films took over, theres very little Optimist in Movie Prime. Sad sad commentary not just for us fans, but for moviegoers period. He'll always be my robodad, my favorite figure, my hero.
Beautifully written, thanks for sharing. I see a parallel between Prime and Christ as well, especially with the self-sacrificing attitude and the trinity of being linked with 2 other beings. The comparison to Superman is often made, but Supe was just so invincible, I don't think he struggled as much as Optimus and required as much resolve and optimism. I enjoyed the first Bay Transformers movie because I think it had a bit of the original spirit of Optimus Prime, but I checked out with "Give me your face" and "We will kill them all." That incarnation isn't intended for me, and is Optimus Prime in name only. The important thing is not the name or the model of truck; it's the wise, compassionate, empathetic and self-sacrificing spirit within.
One thing that's hit me as an adult watching Transformers is the subtle John Wayne influence on Prime in voice and character, notably from his more positive portrayals in films. There's even a bit of swagger there sometimes. I appreciate the videos, Michael. Thank you!
Thanks! He definitely had a John Wayne twang to his voice in the early episodes. It might have gotten knocked out of him when he crashed to Earth after borrowing Sideswipe's rocket pack. :D
A True Hero. Thank you for this amazing video. Optimus Prime has and always will be my favorite character from anything. I love Optimus, not only because he's a the greatest warrior or leader, but because i've always seen Optimus as the ultimate father figure. Wise, honorable, and compassionate, a true leader. A true hero. A leader who is gentle and cares for his comrades and not just loudly barking out orders and stuff. The voice Actor; Peter Cullen, portrays him perfectly and helped to form the character the way he is, he's a great guy, i love him. Optimus Prime stands as a beacon of hope and freedom, he inspires his Autobots to be the best they can be, and teaches them the Autobot code: that all sentient life is precious and should be free. His comrades love and respect him. It's weird how you can look up to these fictitious characters and be inspired by them and relate to them, especially Optimus Prime. He's the one I always looked up to growing up, His character and personality inspired and molded my morals and ideals growing up throughout my life. I believe that all of us no matter the age, can learn something or another from Optimus Prime throughout our lives. TILL ALL ARE ONE! :')
Loved this review, it hits home. I still have 26 of the original 27 “Wave 1” Transformer packages, all acquired as a kid in ’84-’85. They are valuable to me because I am the only owner they’ve ever had - I remember the excitement of each and every purchase and gift. Most collectors are younger than me, and have more transformers than I do. But for my Transformers, every ding, scratch, all chrome wear and each unfortunate break was from my own hand. That makes my collection more valuable than anything else I have. I also remember the feeling of turning the corner in K-Mart or WalMart and seeing freshly stocked shelves of magnificent Transformers packaging. Ah, the memories! Cheers, my friend!
I know this is a few years old, but I absolutely love your critique of Optimus Prime. I was a child of the 80s myself. Even though I never owned any Transformers toys, I did watch the cartoon. Optimus always stood out to me and I fondly remembered him was a great character. Decades later, I revisited the G1 cartoon and have a greater appreciation for him, especially after hearing the story about Larry Cullen. I love characters that show compassion. Prime himself is exactly as you describe and that's what makes him a great leader. I also adore Beachcomber for his love for nature and kind heart, and Tracks, whom, despite being vain like Sunstreaker, isn't afraid to befriend and see the good in humans, rather than fall to xenophilia.
Brings back such great memories for me. I remember when my Dad brought OP home from a business trip, thank you for making and sharing this video brother! You put a smile on my face and a warmth in my heart! Thank you Dad!
I feel the same way and it's refreshing to hear someone else express themselves with such fearlessness and honesty. You're a gem my brother. We are cut from the same cloth, or in this case, the same metal! I have nothing to add because you've truly said it all.
Optimus Prime was my five star hero in the 80s and the ultimate role model and mentor. They never should have killed him off in the 1986 film I was so happy when they brought him back.
Beautifully done, Michael. You’ve brilliantly summarized the very best of what a “mere kids’ cartoon” can bring to our lives. Prime’s kind of heroism represents equal parts strength, kindness wisdom and compassion...and while I personally can’t always find that kind of strength and don’t always posses the as much wisdom as I’d like, I’ve always been sure to embody the kindness and compassion to the best of my abilities. This cartoon character has impacted so many decisions in my life from life-long vegetarianism to a psychotherapy career. It sounds like Prime had a similarly deep affect on you. :) Thanks so much for putting this together and sharing your thoughts. Down here in the USA, the idea of this kind of a leader makes our hearts ache. We need Prime more than ever. ...And yeah, the 1984 toy is a treasure! My copy hasn’t fared as well as your original but it is cherished.
You've got a really special channel here. Beyond your impressive collection, you have genuine heart, and you're not afraid to show it. This video really demonstrates that. Fantastic work, my friend. Thank you.
I remember as a kid i looked every where for my own prime...never found a G1 prime....was so heart broken i couldnt get one before they was disconnected but as soon as the G2 as released i snatched one up....played with it forever....then the 20th anniversary mp prime as soon as it was released....finally i found a complete almost mint G1 prime on ebay....hes the pride and joy and center piece of my G1 collection....as well as my 20th anniversary prime is to my mp collection...he was always my favorite and get every piece of prime memorabilia i can get my hands on thank you for the wonderful video of a 80s kids hero.....now i wanna go transform my prime and watch the entire series again just to relive my child hood one more time even if it is just 30 mins at a time...
Man...that's exactly how i see it too. People don't get how profound this character is...he is honorable but fierce in battle. I had him...the same you are showing. I love it.
Prime was my first Transformer in "84" of Christmas. My Dad got him for me because he knew I liked trucks and it was the best Christmas present ever. This was before I even knew what "Transformers" was but after I knew, I would come home from School everyday and watch Transformers with my Optimus Prime. I never missed a episode of Transformers. Prime was definitely my favorite and I collect Transformers till this day. I love the tribute. He was definitely a roll model to me and other kids I'm sure coming up. "Till the day till all are one."
Just watched your video for the first time and what an amazing video you made!! As you can see from my avatar I am a bit of a prime fan myself....lol. your story of your childhood with prime was very rendition to my own. I share the sentiments you did in this video and am going to be a new subscriber now because of it. Let the narrow minded make their uneducated hateful comments. Those should carry little weight to the positive message you are trying to share. Prime was just as much an idea and philosophy as he was a character. We all would be a little wiser if we all exercised some of positive ideals he represented! Thank you for taking the time to make this video and share your memories of Optimus!!!!
I remember as if it was today....Optimus was impossible to find. I had many Transformers but Oprimus took time. One Christmas day my grandmother gave it to me. It was a moment...awesone.
Optimus was my favorite as a little girl. I adored him. He was more than my childhood hero, he was what inspired me to do the right thing even though it can suck. Thank you, Optimus, you were my childhood hero.
This was beautiful; thank you! I bought a $30 knockoff from China about a year ago but I don't care about the authenticity: I love it because it's Optimus Prime. Love your vids; have a good one.
I am in awe at how good a condition your original G1 is in! And that Matrix you made is great. Thank you for this show case, as well as the message you have emphasized in this video. I plan to have my boys watch this.
Thanks! Love Supe as well but he was practically invincible (except for Kryptonite) so I thought it was a bit easier for him to be as good and pure as he was. Prime took many beatings, one of which killed him and he pretty much knew that going in and accepted it with grace and resolve, so his attitude seemed like a more difficult, self-sacrificing choice to me.
I just seen this video and i agree with you optimus prime is an amazing role model. I have a son that love optimus i was on youtube one day and showed him the part from the 80s movie when they landed and Prime said megatron must be stopped no matter the cost... And he watched Prime rollout and put some boot to steel and my son want amazed with it. I told my son he wasn't fighting cause he wanted to he was doing cause he had to to put an end to all the horrible things they where doing. Ever since then he's loved prime. I have a question for you if you read this? From one optimus fan to another how did you feel when you watch the 80s movie and watch prime... Die
Dude you brought a tear to my eye... I remember looking through every toy store in town for Megatron, Optimus Prime, and Starscream when they came out in 1984-1985! That Christmas my dad finally found Megatron at one of the two Toys-R-Us in Knoxville, an uncle found Prime at believe it or not Kroger, but I never found or got a Starscream.
I remember when I was in Montreal on sicard street and my friend lived long distance from my house I went to his house to play transformers these parents were richer than my grandparents my dad's parents in those years were not very like today at 43 if i win the biglot i would like you my passion for the trans-formers thank you ..
My older cousin introduced me to Transformers. As I didn't have a brother, I looked up to and idolized him. He was the coolest person with the Tom Cruise haircut and Casio keyboard. He taught me more about life, friendship, empathy, and how to be a leader more than any adult in my life. He learned this from watching Transformers more specifically Optimus Prime as he was his hero as well. When he grew out of his toys, I received them as hand me downs since I was watching the cartoon in re runs and talking about Transformers to anyone who would listen. So up in the attic of my grandparent's house one day, a big suitcase was brought down and as I unbuckled it and began peeling back the lid there inside were Transformers. Ultra Magnus, mini cars and tapes, Thundercracker, Jazz, Slag, Snarl, Jetfire, the Constructicons, Whirl, Soundwave etc etc etc. but the one that excited me the most (other than Magnus) as I peeled away all of these various bots, the one which lit me up most was Optimus Prime. He was far from new, having seen many a battle in the sandbox or hardwood floor. The trailer hitch was gone, and other than his fists and rifle he was missing all of his accessories, but it was a joy to have this guy in my hands. Converting him without instructions felt like an accomplishment. Too me the weathering wasn't bad, he was well loved, and he really looked like the seasoned and battle worn leader of the Autobots. I have memories of playing with Optimus with my cousin and he used that opportunity to teach me of the commander's basic principles and mantra. Lessons I kept with me to this day, where as a department manager with a leadership role as trainer I like to think my cousin rubbed off on me. So watching this video, and looking at this toy, I see my cousin and I like to believe that because of my cousin that I am the person I am today. I have Optimus Prime to thank for this.
One of my best toy ever.. I remember that day when my dad took me to the toystore here in sweden and we grab that fantastic optimus. I help my parents in some weeks to get this! Great memories!!
Optimus Prime was a real example of what a real hero is truly like. He fought not because he enjoyed it. But because that was the only way to deal with Megatron and his Deceptions.. it would have been great if there could have been peace between the Autobots and Deceptions.
To me: Optimus Prime = Superman. Not in terms of power but in heart. They share the same passion for all life. Just my point of view. Both are my all-time favorite. Equally.
This is a masterpiece. One of the best TH-cam videos ever made. And one that I will never grow tired of watching and sharing. Your abilities to analyze symbolism and articulate meaning are top notch. Thanks a lot for creating this, Michael! Hope you and your family are doing great.
Honestly perhaps one of the best videos I have ever had the privilege of watching. When I was younger I loved the Transformers and still do. Especially Optimus Prime. I loved watching the animated series back in the 1980s. It's just like you said, Optimus was pure, a real humanitarian and a genuine hero. I looked up to him too and still do to this day. Unfortunately I lost my original Optimus many years ago in a house fire and never again possessed another. Hopefully one day I can afford to get another one. He meant so much to me. I would love to hold him once again in my hands and transform him from truck to robot and back. That was seriously a great feeling to be able to do. It was like having two toys in one but it was so much more than that. Even the box he came in was so special with the specs and the red decoder reader, just a seriously awesome toy. They don't make em like him anymore. Thank you so much for making this video it means a lot to this over grown kid, lol....
All of your words about Optimus really resonated with me. I’m an early 2000s kid, but my mom grew up with G1. As such she had all the DVDs. So I grew up with both the Unicron Trilogy, and G1. Optimus to me was a symbol of absolute right, and heroism. He defined my morals. A lot of people like to ask “what would Jesus do?” I try and ask myself “what would Optimus do?”. Wether it be the humble truck dad of G1, or the military commander of Armada. He’s the greatest hero I could’ve ever asked for.
Thanks to your channel of all the Transformers I grew up with. Helped my 7 year old to see all the cool stuff we had and fueled on what his favorite toys are. His favorite is Optimus Prime and I’m just blessed and privileged to share this with him. He’s given me on recapturing my childhood and start back to collecting of what I grew up with. He’s wanting a G1 like Devastator. Keep the good content coming and thank you again.
Indeed
I Grew up without a father.
For me Optimus filled that role.
Coincidence I later became a Truck Driver?
Probably not.
I had a father but he wasn't a very good one. Optimus was my substitute father and I saw myself in Hot Rod becoming Rodimus when I became an adult and father myself.
@@williamhays7356
It would be awesome if OP didn't died in the 1986 movie and had a somewhat like a father to Rodimus. He could put Rodimus in line.
Rodimus: But I don't wanna
Optimus: Oh yes you do *dragging Rodimus Prime*
He was my father figure too. I thought I was the only one.
It is my case too, Optimus and He-Man they was my father for me.
Ill just say this... if you can watch this WITHOUT BALLING...... well we know
Michael Mercy roll for it autobot
Have to agree with this.
I feel like optimus would be proud to hear that story
This is a really nice story.
“Freedom is the right of all sentient beings”
Optimus Prime 1984
I never knew that I would ever get a heart from a TH-camr. 🤯😳😶😐🙃
Also "Hang on to your dreams chip. The future is built on dreams. Hang on." Me 1985
Unless your a decepticon
That was probably the most heartfelt and sincere review/tribute video I've seen.Well done Mr Mercy.
Thank you. Nerdmasté! 🙏
This! I echo this!
For many years I thought that I was the only one who felt that way. He was and always will be bigger than just a toy or fictional character...he's an inspiration in my opinion that is unparalleled. Thank you for this video my friend, best wishes !!!
This was a PhD thesis level tribute to Optimus Prime. Well done!
Optimus was his favorite too 🤓😎
I saw a video of Peter telling that story of how his late brother had inspired Optimus’s voice. I started tearing up when he did. It explained everything.
"The greatest weakness of most humans is their hesitancy to tell others how they love them while they're alive"
Optimus Prime
Spoken like a true Prime.
beautiful, moving and sophisticated narration. Every child needs a rolemodel like Optimus Prime? I feel blessed I grew up in the 80s
Thanks Robin! We were very lucky to have heroes like Optimus, Duke, He-Man, She-Ra and Lion-O.
I feel blessed that I grew up with him, too.
Me who grew up [and is still growing] in the Early 2000's: ... holy moly I missed out on a ton of stuff .
Optimus has been my childhood hero ever since I was a kid.
Optimus Prime had an integrity that, to this day, is still unmatched by any other leader. Thank you for your beautiful words.
Great job as always
unfortuntely, he later proceded to rip other transformers heads off
He is all of those things you said. Not Michael Bay's "GIVE ME YOUR FACE!" version.
Or "We will kill them all." Took me a while to realize that just because Peter Cullen was still doing the voice, that didn't mean it was still *my* Optimus Prime. :D
I love Bayverse Prime.
I never liked how Michael Bay made Optimus Prime blood thirsty too.Like when he was so quick to kill Sentinel Prime and Megatron.
Transformers 1's Optimus Prime is still the wise, brave, selfless Autobot we all know and loved. *_Until the second movie came in everything was fine._*
Michael Mercy the optimus of TF1 was just like the g1 fearless gentle leader. Until the revenge of the fallen came along
I don't think Michael Bay understands Optimus Prime like we do
Travis Knight does!
@@autobotlaserbolt2128 definitely
Yeah your right micheal bay thinks of him as a murderous phycopath that love death, and brandishes fighting
Yes, it is true.
You are right.....
Tremendous insight. Well worth several rewatches.
"Evil succeeds when good fails to act."
Optimus is the GOOD that ALWAYS ACTS.
A Hero for the ages.
Thanks Bill! Great quote.
Heroes shouldn't determined by how hard they can punch the enemy In the face. It should be determined by the heart behind it.
"Be strong enough to be gentle" -Larry Cullen, brother of Peter Cullen, Optimus Prime
❤️
I am so happy that you are here today to tell your story. It is truly amazing that one character could do that through just a few words. He definitely did save your life, I believe that!
that speech was.. beautiful.
Hasbro is destructing optimus' personality. he's not a murderer leader. or a quiet truck. he is the one every transformers fan loves. he will be the autobot leader in our hearts forever. i lost my Optimus 3 years ago. i want to buy him again. but it will never replace the one i lost...
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. :D
Aww I’m so sorry
They'll never kill him!"
Not long after, I was watching the silver screen in disbelief as the mournful soundtrack marked Prime's last (ostensibly) moments.
Prime was my first transformer figure I got back in 1984, soundwave was my second !! Optimus Prime is awesome !!
I finally have gotten my hands on the Walmart Generation 1 Reissue Optimus Prime. He is the true definition of the word hero.
He's my hero to tile all or one
Optimus LIVES at BIGBADTOYSTORE: bit.ly/BBTStoys
hes the greatest hero of our time
Sadly I don't have any of my original toys...sold the last of them (my TMNT figures and Swamp Thing figures) about 5 or 6 years ago...but I started collecting Transformers again last year and die cast vehicles this year (2 of my all time favorite toys)...maybe eventually they'll bring back Masters of the Universe (another favorite toy line of mine).

That was amazing Michael!!! Almost made me cry... ALMOST!!! :) I feel exactly the same way about Prime. I owe a lot to Prime for the way I act in the world. He was the best role model!
Haha, thanks. Maybe you're dehydrated? :D
What a great tribute to an 80s icon! Thanks for your hard work on this!
Thank you! :D
Thanks Stuart, glad you enjoyed it, and for sharing your memories. Nerdmasté! 🙏
Laser Optimus was my first Prime I had, it was a gift from my late aunt.
I can say for sure that she had to be the main reason(and my brother) that I got sucked into the world of Transformers.
Just about every spin off since I have always made it my duty to always get the Optimus Prime of said story, my favorite Toys of him being Optimus Primal from Beast Wars and Optimus Prime from Armada(heck I had both versions of that one too)
Currently my most prized piece is the MP Optimus that I snagged for a good price at a Toys R Us about 2 hours away from my home.
Maybe it’ll be quite the adventure like it was with my MP Prime
What else can I say, prime is just the hero of all heroes when it comes down to it for me, he reminds me of my loved ones such as my aunt and also my father.
Thank you for the inspiring words! Nerdmasté! 🙏

Gets most touching thing I’ve heard in a while
I don't think I've ever watched a video that so perfectly mirrors my feelings about something from my childhood. I've never forgotten the lessons I learned growing up with Optimus Prime as my hero. It was amazing how similar our stories are along with our admiration for Optimus. Thank you so much for making this video.
Wow this was so inspiring ☺️ He is one of the 80’s greats
This got me hype to watch Transformers The Movie for the first time in the theater! Awesome video! Thanks!
The important thing is not the name or the model of truck; it's the wise, compassionate, empathetic and self-sacrificing spirit within.
same here i love optimus, a true hero!
@@MichaelMercy Indeed, well said.
The way you spoke in review that was just beautiful Bumblebee also inspired me because he taught me ones should not be measured by size alone
Optimus Prime my Hero always my hero i even wanted to be a prime like him. Thanks for Reminding me Keep up :)
This episode made me tear. Thanks for reminding me how prime influenced me as I was growing up. If only half the worlds leaders shared his sentiments.
That's awesome, thanks. :D
What a great dad! Thanks for sharing. :D
If only more people lived there life's like Prime. Thank you for this video Michael. Awe inspiring words.
They never should have killed him off in the 1986 film
I was so happy when they brought him back.
Thanks so much for putting this together and sharing your thoughts. Down here in the USA, the idea of this kind of a leader makes our hearts ache. We need Prime more than ever.
...And yeah, the 1984 toy is a treasure! My copy hasn’t fared as well as your original but it is cherished.
That hit me right in the feels. I always felt that Optimus was noble, but you put a much deeper emphasis on it. Awesome review.
Thanks, glad it resonated. :D
You've got a really special channel here. Beyond your impressive collection, you have genuine heart, and you're not afraid to show it. This video really demonstrates that. Fantastic work, my friend. Thank you.
Thank you, much appreciated. Take care.
It doesn't matter how many times I hear it, whenever Prime say's "Autobots! Transform, and roll out!" it always gives me chills.
This was wonderful Michael. SHARED. 'Prime Thinking'. Love it. Thank you from Perth Western Australia.
I remember as a kid i looked every where for my own prime...never found a G1 prime....was so heart broken i couldnt get one before they was disconnected but as soon as the G2 as released i snatched one up....played with it forever....then the 20th anniversary mp prime as soon as it was released....finally i found a complete almost mint G1 prime on ebay....hes the pride and joy and center piece of my G1 collection....as well as my 20th anniversary prime is to my mp collection...he was always my favorite and get every piece of prime memorabilia i can get my hands on thank you for the wonderful video of a 80s kids hero.....now i wanna go transform my prime and watch the entire series again just to relive my child hood one more time even if it is just 30 mins at a time...
prime is truly a selfless hero.
I don’t anything against the ones who don’t but I love collectors who aren’t afraid to play with their toys
Kind of like having a classic car and never driving it. They look nice on display, but they were built to be used. 😁
Yeah kinda
I love this! I grew up with Primal, not Prime, but I still love the latter.
The quintessential 80s hero. Well spoken mate....brought a tear to this 40 year old! Once an 80s kid always an 80s kid.
Thanks Rick! Nerdmasté! 🙏
I remember as if it was today....Optimus was impossible to find. I had many Transformers but Oprimus took time.
One Christmas day my grandmother gave it to me. It was a moment...awesone.
*YOU GOT THE TOUCH! YOU'VE GOT THE POWERRRRR~!*
Optimus was my favorite as a little girl. I adored him. He was more than my childhood hero, he was what inspired me to do the right thing even though it can suck. Thank you, Optimus, you were my childhood hero.
Optimus, Duke, Lion-O, QuickSilver & others... my ideals from that late 80s era of iconic representatives of true heroism :_)
Going to have to go with you on that one.
I think as a developing transformers fan that this video is one of the things that had me realize that Optimus Prime was my favorite autobot.
even thought I was born in 2003 I expended my early days of childhood watching G1
I was six years old in 1984 when the transformers first aired. Optimus prime was my first true hero. He still is my hero.
This was beautiful; thank you! I bought a $30 knockoff from China about a year ago but I don't care about the authenticity: I love it because it's Optimus Prime. Love your vids; have a good one.
The KO is a good way for us to get the packaging again in a nice condition, just like in the video.
I am in awe at how good a condition your original G1 is in! And that Matrix you made is great. Thank you for this show case, as well as the message you have emphasized in this video. I plan to have my boys watch this.
Great Tribute to the great Optimus Prime. He was like Superman was for me growing up. A Real Hero.
I won't argue with that even if Superman too as his share of beatings. Either way they are both great.
optimus is my fave character in history you helped me understand why thanks michael
Optimus and Robocop were my childhood heroes.
optimus meant a lot to me i watched the first 3 bay movies as a kid and optimus showed me that i can stand up for myself and to be kind to others
Die
Just got a G1 prime a few months ago, god is he good.
Cartoons from the good years are way better than the crap that we got on now today.
I remember when I was in Montreal
on sicard street and my friend lived long distance from my house
I went to his house to play transformers
these parents were richer than my grandparents my dad's parents in those years were not very like today at 43
if i win the biglot i would like you my passion for the trans-formers thank you ..
I have Optimus Prime to thank for this.
paper clip matrix!!!!!! What we did when we used our imagination! kids today don't have any
One of my best toy ever..
Thank you kindly. All the best to you and yours.
He was also my friend and a hero he became my friend,my hapiness during the covid and lonely days of my life
All of your words about Optimus really resonated with me.
Chris Hemsworth has big shoes to fill in Transformers 1, but I have faith he'll bring his own shoes. As Billy Joel sang "I'm keeping the faith."
