Interracial marriages more common, but still face barriers

  • Many things have changed in the 54 years since the U.S. Supreme Court ruled, in Loving v. Virginia, that laws banning interracial marriage are unconstitutional. Today, at least 19% of new marriages in America involve spouses from different ethnic or racial groups. But that doesn't mean that the difficulties they face have disappeared. Correspondent Rita Braver talks with couples whose relationships and children still draw uncomfortable conversations about racism within families across every social and economic level, and about how their love ultimately conquers all.

My friend Jose who is Mexican, married a Black woman in the early 60's. His family and friends told him he was crazy. They had a son. Their relationship didn't last, but Jose was close to his son. They both experienced racism due to their mixed relationship. I asked Jose once why he married Dorothy, and he simply said, "Why not!"

@@Andrew-om1pw here in the “good ole” USA. I say “strange how that works” because in a racist person’s eyes, anyone of a darker race shouldn’t be allowed to have children who are white in complexion. They will harass and question a parent or caregiver of those babies as if they are committing some sort of offense, yet the same wouldn’t apply in reverse. They claim it’s for the “safety” of the children, yet they don’t have that same reaction when a white person is out with darker complexion children.

He passed his racist values down to four of his biological sons. Oldest brother, son of a Sicilian father. He and I were the oddballs. Me being female and my oldest brother full Sicilian. My mother didn’t like females. There are abusive stories that I don’t need to share that traumatized me. My husband’s family embraced me from day 1 and I finally felt loved and worthy of love. The right to marry whomever you choose, no matter the race, is a right that should be preserved no matter what. Loving V. Virginia is a landmark case that protects and allows for people to act on this right to the fullest. The federal government, state governments, local bureaucrats, or any power centers should never dictate how people choose to love, because that’s an unnatural barrier that goes against the the most natural part of a human, which is the heart. Ultimately, love is something that transcends beyond racial lines, and hinges upon the character of each partner. If your partners have amazing qualities and traits, race is utterly irrelevant.

Everything that is inherent in white (eyes, eye color, skin color, hair color and coarseness, etc.) disappears, you do not have to worry about giving birth to Asians. All the same, the white race cannot be saved, tolerance kills everything human in people - this is culture. We experience many hardships because of it but our love for each other was seen in everything we did. We lived a better happier life than every friend, Neighbour, family member and co-worker who hated on us. Years as a Widow I still experience the hate. I have no regrets. As a member of the Bahá'í Faith, this is very normal to us.
