One direction fans get a lot of stick for liking a 'boy band' and people often say it's not real music. I certainly wasn't a teenager when they first started, but you know what? I enjoy their music. It's fun. It puts a smile on my face. I never got to go to one of their concerts, but I know I would have had a blast. Life is WAY to short, and people shouldn't let others opinions stop you from having fun and enjoying what you enjoy, even if others put you down :)
One Direction is NOT A “BOY BAND “ “BOY BANDS” are contrived corporate write offs that must dance and sound like white Michael Jackson’s. And mostly FAR REMOVED from Rock Music. ONE DIRECTION for that matter are real guys who have an ear for Rock music, they listen to Classic Rock and are more musicians than posers. Zane is probably the closest to a boy band member but he was a great singer and added much style to 1D. Styles has a unique voice and dare I say Style and he’s also got an influence from classic Rock bands. Along with Niall Horan who’s actually writing decent rock songs now, helping Rock music stay alive. So anybody who seriously calls One Direction a boy band, would call the Beatles the first boy band, Are really clueless to music terms and what bands are all about. Initially the individual members of 1 D were all talented in their own rights and were eventually combined their talents together. Fortunately they also had Good writers and kept the music true to the direction these young men wanted to pursue musically. That’s why they’re so much more than contrived Boy bands.

I think they really hit at the exact perfect time to create such a big audience phenomenon since there was such a rise in social media use that made artists seem more accessible to fans. I used to really dislike One Direction when I was younger and they were popular because I had that "too cool" kind of attitude. I re-listened later on because I found Louis' solo music and liked it, so then I went back since he wrote a lot of the One Direction songs. They definitely have a lot of good catchy pop songs and some good pop rock stuff for the stadiums.

They never ever act like they need to aplogize for what music they make or what audience they have even though general public and their peers nevr really took them seriously. Not that it made like boybands (except this one) but there was something to think about) They all are doing their own thing now and some thought it should be cool to dismiss whatever they did as a band to say "but now I'm making the real music" but it didn't play well for them in a long run. My faves are Haryy Styles and Nial Horan out of this band, their music and influences are something that's very relatable to my own music taste, it was so refreshing to discover these two guys among mainstream pop-shit tbh. They're a bit different I'd say. Hon, the one with the dismissive attitude is the one who was discrimimated against the most, and the most talented of them all and gets millions of streams and listeners on spotify. His anxiety is what makes him less known among the general public. That doesn't take away from the fact that he is artistically the most versatile of them all. And a talent like Zayn can NEVER DISSOLVE , he will live through his music and his fans.
You guys should check out some of Harry's, Niall's, and Louis' solo music. They all are more rock inspired (Harry and Niall definitely are more 70s/80s pop/rock inspired and Louis mid-to-late 90s rock), and yes they write their music and can all play instruments.
Would you mind react to any of Harry Styles' solo work? He's my favourite from the band, and has definitely had the most successful career so far. He's currently doing a 15 show residency at Madison Square Garden! The song "Kiwi" is great live, may be a good start, I think you guys would enjoy it!
They do write their own music! So many people assume they don't and I'm not sure why! They didn't at first, because they were new to the business and did what they were told (mostly...they were actually quite chaotic and playfully hard to control, according to their management, security and producers...but that was part of their charm). You can tell they paid attention to the process and soaked up as much knowledge and experience as they could and when they took creative control, they were on a whole other level. By the way, I am 47 and first heard Harry during lockdown and dove deep into the rabbit hole of this band and their solo music. And I know a lot of men with a broad range of ages who are now fans as well. It's a shame that we miss out on good music because we give in to a certain stereotype. I'm guilty as well! Now I know better because boy would I love to see these guys live! Even if it isn't someone's cup of tea, most people gain a great deal of respect for their talent and artistry. They know how to write a good song and as you have seen, they know how to put on a show. I am just bummed that I didn't pay more attention when they were still together and touring. They're similar to the Beatles in the sense that they created a phenomenon of a fan base and in the fact that their fan base started out as primarily teenage girls and young adult women. They also are both British groups (even though one member of One Direction is Irish) who made it in the U.S. and capitalized on new forms of media to grow their success to massive levels relatively quickly- the Beatles benefitted a lot from TV appearances and One Direction used social media to be more accessible to fans. Even though the music is different, and obviously the Beatles have been more critically acclaimed/ universally liked over time, it's still an easy comparison to make-- and actually a really good comparison. Also when I was younger and hated One Direction, I thought the same thing about "stealing songs" but really they just used samples and interpolations, which everyone in the music industry does. You don't have to like One Direction's music or listen to it, but that doesn't change the fact that they had, and continue to have, a large effect on pop culture.
