  • In this video tutorial, Matt Schmelzer, CNC instructor at NWTC, shows us how to grind a 118-degree drill bit.
Keeping your HSS drill bits is paramount to obtain good results in your drilling operations. Luckily, the process of sharpening the tool is pretty simple, it just requires a pedestal grinder, a few tools, and a little bit of practice. In this short video demonstration, CNC instructor Matt Schmelzer goes through the entire process, starting from and tool rest setup and grinding wheel dressing.
    Tools used:
    - Angle protractor (amzn.to/2PTM1je)
    - Scale (amzn.to/3h826gA)
    - Bench Grinder (bit.ly/3uswWnN)
    - Aluminum oxide wheel (bit.ly/3y0VUx1)
    - Hooded dressing tool (bit.ly/3baY6YG)

Now try a split point drill. The radius at the edge of the wheel is key.

Everyone uses a bigger bit to sharpen its the small ones that are difficult.

Why not make a jig for sharpening that kind of drill? Why leave room for human error?
