I love Vilppu, I studied under him for a few days. He drew me a picture, it's on my wall at the moment. ^_^ He is an absolutely amazing artist and teacher. He taught me more in three days than I could have learned in 5 years!
from all the TH-cam videos, all the books and workshops, and all the masters, I finally found the voice and the teacher that I really can connect to. It's master Vilppu for sure.
I've been fortunate to have taken several classes taught by Glenn at the animation guild. My wife and I even went on a sketching tour in Italy with Glenn and his beautiful wife, Eleanor. They are of the finest human beings on the planet. As wonderful as Glenn is an artist, he is the best teacher I have ever met. I'm an elementary school teacher, and I hope I am the teacher to my students, that Glenn is to his.
Beautiful artistry. This is my go to video whenever I want to revisit feeling in my art. Thank you for preserving Vilppu's mastery on TH-cam for all of us to witness!
i just love it when experienced artists teach how to loosen up. it feels like an angelic revelation each time. never saw somebody teach rhythm, volumes and containment so simple and effective. thanks proko for uploading this awesome demo and a special thanks to glenn!
Villpu a true master. He's was my first intro to figure drawing and he seriously makes an accurate masterpiece from basic gesture lines in an instant. Truly master of his craft.
I've known Glenn Vilpuu since the 1980s. He's one of the mainstays of the L A. drawing instruction scene, especially in the animation industry. He's really persevered, and taught me all the basics.
Hearing him say his drawing is rhythmic and seeing it in action and seeing how the pieces that fit together are formed, is certainly eye opening. I found myself so intrigued that I was automatically blocking out the elevator music and just tuning into his voice. His drawing actually does not put me to sleep, I find myself wanting more and more and each and every line he puts down seem deliberate to me.
Same thing happened to me, its like he is sculpting with the pencil and then it clicked, the rythm, the forms the volume (insert mind blown gif here) I imidiatly run to my desk after the video to draw some gestures and I leveled up like 2 levels just by watching this, no joke.
I took three of his classes at the Animation Guild in North Hollywood. He even gave me a signed page from his sketchbook. One of my prized possessions!
his breakdown at 17:40, 19:04, 21:30 about how he constructs the gesture and keeps the flow of his rhythm was super helpful. i was trying to find a pattern for the way he moves around the gesture but i couldnt pinpoint it so i was so glad when he explained. 24:08 was super helpful too when he showed another method (silhouette/tone) method
ok guys this is a really weird feelling.. but watching this I think changed my whole to approach drawing.. I was drawing with him.. Im not saying Im a master now.. but I certainly draw different after this... I mean really different.. the faces have a soul now.. just watching him draw I learn so much thing ... I learn them but Im not sure I understand them yet.. thanks proko.. thanks stan and glenn
I did this as well, I think I may still draw in my old way but I've never done realism or drawing in general quite like this, his teaching is truly one of a kind.
The comments about gloves are mind blowing. How immature are you to not understand that skill like this is a lifetime achievement. You won't see drawing skill plus teaching ability done by an infant's hands. Be grateful & enjoy the gift you are getting & keep your childish remarks out of it.
@@artistsukh1127 you bet... Although Marshall is maybe even better... As a teacher, just that the guy didn't practice out for as long as the other two by far... And had bad influences in his youth-
Age isn't the reason why this video is so amazing. There are people who can teach you skills just like this who are much younger. What all good teachers have in common is the ability to transfer their understanding of the subject to you in the most palatable, efficient, and interesting way possible. That combined with an immense knowledge of drawing is what makes this video so amazing.
Geez, I'm just 12 years old and for someone who loves drawing, hearing him about how he feels when doing gesture drawing figures, everything seeming do easy, but being a total life time skill, I still feel my 4 years of learning are not even close to drawing well. i'm feeling tears brushing through my cheek. Thanks Glenn
I'm so glad I watched this. In only 25 minutes, I've learned so much that will help me to improve my drawings. I definitely need to scrounge up the $900 it will cost to take one of Glenn's online courses.
The hypnotic thing is true. Watching him draw makes my breathing even out and I feel my mind quieting. Drawing can be like a form of meditating, and watching someone who's able to enter that meditative state draw is contagious. Lately I've been watching a demo with either him or Steve Huston before I start my own gesture drawings, just to kind of get my brain in the right place (probably a habit I eventually need to drop and just find in myself, but for now it works).
Dear Stan, i dont know whether you are going to read this or no but i want to tell you that this video has changed my life, extremely helpful and mindblowing. I see improvement right after watching it. You are amazing proko!!!!!!
Speechless. At the moment I'm broke, but when everything will go better, I'll donate that's for sure, I bought most lessons from you, but your contribution is way too important to just pass on it, thanks for your time Proko, still practicing before submitting assignments ( the gesture part is beginning to be really fun), here's hoping it's still open of course.
i watched on of vilppu's videos explaining form and volume and something just clicked, it helped me reach a new level in my art. that is more valuable than basic "how to draw" videos, trust me
Glen is definitely hypnotic. I got the gist of the flow before coming to this video, but observing more examples of it can help build confidence in trying it and new methods for it.
I'm just getting back into drawing, so, of course, I'm struggling, but this video gives me a kind of hope I didn't think I'd feel again. Glenn Vilppu is a saint and truly worthy of respect.
My god Stan! I’m taking the basics course and working my way through the Draftsman podcasts. You and Marshall have mentioned Vilppu hundreds of times but I had no idea. I should have clicked on this video sooner. This guy is amazing! Also very relaxing. I might fall asleep watching him too.
I'm not exactly sure why, but when Glenn was working on the head in ink and the face popped out, I began laughing, and then I teared up a bit. I guess I was struck by the beauty of sculpting - while drawing - and it was a bit emotional for me. Thanks for bringing Glenn Vilppu to my attention, Proko. And thanks to Glenn too!
Vilppu is such a master. I love his books so much. The Vilppu Manual of Drawing is a bible to those who want to understand how to DRAW and not just copy. Thank you so much Mr. Vilppu.

So many items on the net discuss gesture, discuss what it means, give examples and then STOP!. Then what? How does gesture translate into something more? What's the next step? In this video, Mr. Vilppu shows us what's next. Showing how form and containment take gesture from action to a drawing. Finally, gesture as a basis for a work rather than an exercise. Thanks guys! I needed that.
that was great! Very clarifying, on drawing from the imagination, with anatomy knowledge based on years of practice. And, he has such a good time for himself!
I have read one of his drawing manuals which is why I have high grades in my course in college in my freehand drawing subjects. :D he has a very concise and very clear teachings in drawing rhythm/ flow and proportions in the book, (my brother actually photo copied the book from his work library since drawing manuals are expensive and rare in here)
Wow, this video was great, I've seen many of Vilppu's videos before, but it was as if it didn't really click until this one, it was explained really well.
So inspiring! Feel like I have got a brand new understanding of gesture, anatomy and basic drawing! Thank you lending us your time Mr. Vilppu, you have my deepest respect! And Proko, thank you for making this! It changed my day to the better! :D
Nice movement and rythym , helps the composition. Giving the figure and mass relation to the composition. I don't do this often in my work but Im pretty good at planned compositions , and will do more soon. Yes I like Glen's work alot , He's great .
This man has been drawing for all his life and these techniques have become so natural to him that it must be extremely difficult to explain them in more concrete terms than “feel” and “flow”. Imagine trying to explain how to ride a bike to someone who has never done that before. Personally I also find it infinitely more valuable to hear directly what's going through his mind (however abstract that may be), than some simple 3-step how-to that teaches you nothing in the end.
I like that he does the messy way of sketching to get the flow, kept thinking I was doing it wrong because my sketches are so messy and aren't perfect clean lines which everyone says is how it has to be.
I love Vilppu, I studied under him for a few days. He drew me a picture, it's on my wall at the moment. ^_^ He is an absolutely amazing artist and teacher. He taught me more in three days than I could have learned in 5 years!

This is like yoda teaching you the way of the force.
This made my Day! LOL!
Perfect example. He's a drawing master.
The way of the rhythm
"Use Rhythm lines you must, young artist."
That's actually Mike Mattesi!
I studied under this man at "Art Center College of Design" in Los Angeles in the early 70"s and he is still at the top of his profession.

Three things:-
1. Rhythm
2. Shape/Volume
3. Containment
gesture main 3 movmentes:
1.- s curves
2.-line/ c curve
3.- double c cuerve
There is no rules! I can take the gesture without CSI curves and get the rhythm the same way. There is many ways to do.

+bellesmom2012 Yeah, seriously. Have they never seen old people's hands before?
True. Hands of a Master.
bellesmom2012 those hands are legendary and have so much history, some people are just so young and immature to realize it.
Why are they not watching the lines and forms? I had not even noticed his hands; but now you mention it, they are beautiful! What a master.
I didn't even notice the hands until you mentioned it.
As an artist and teacher, Glenn Vilppu has no rival.

Amen. He talks constantly as he draws. He verbalizes his thought process as you watch him go. There’s nothing like it.

"Gesture is the soul of the drawing".....this man is a drawing poet. Beautiful.
This is a goldmine of drawing advice in one video.
There is more drawing wisdom in this single video than in many whole courses combined! Just stunning.
The true sign of a master is when they make the thing they do seem very effortless and easy.
True with anything, music, sports, art, etc, etc.
This channel is absolute heaven for a person interested in art!
Vilppu is one of the few art instructors I look up too as an instructor myself. I enjoy his teaching style.
