Sorry for the wait! This was supposed to be done in July, but things got kinda hairy in my schedule and I had to postpone for a while. All music used is credited when it starts in the video! This is a mother's-basement type-deal which I only made because I think the chances of Geoff ever covering this are slim to none.

I can agree that there's more to the animation of the second opening, though I really liked the beginning and servant/master shots of the first opening. I also prefer the music of the first opening, it seemed to fit the theme and setting better in my opinion. While I enjoy the music of the second opening, hearing it with the Apocrypha visuals feels off to me, perhaps because the pop/rock style is a rather jarring change from the dramatic choir style first opening.
true but the part in the second op where it builds up the tension towards the middle with the parts that play then stop the music breifly then continue and stop it feels tense and in that time it shows both factions and shirou turning his back along with his companions as they looks so menacing like a great evil
Still, think the 1st OP at least from a lyrical and mood standpoint is far better then ASH, but yes I agree the First OP from an animation perspective etc is just everywhere and boring, the music is the only thing that really holds you.
The issue with the 2nd is sure it's LISA so yeah it sounds great but it's just generic insert very loud and pumping up song, from an animation standpoint though it's better, but the 1st Op had this Gothic Rock and sadness to it that fits fate amazingly and when you read it's lyrics you end up just going 'This song clearly fits the atmosphere and theme'
There are some good points about the 1st op the first few opening shots are great, I love the showing of a Chessboard it's great, I enjoy the montage of black and red in the slides in this very grafetti like fashion and the map before zooming in through the gothic dark foggy woods, after that though it all just sorta falls apart into just 'stuff' being shown.
I personally don't like the second op song
It feels generic and doesn't really do that much
The actual animation sequence is better but the first song was freaky and unique

OP 1 was better.
In the opening the sakura blossoms are white which is similar to where sieg ends up in land of beasts. Having ruler in the light looking at the blossoms could imply that she is trying to reach Sieg through perpetual summons. Whereas Sieg is surrounded by grass hidden from the moon implies he is already there, looking at his memories of Jeanne and Astolfo when we see him at the end he is sleeping probably dreaming of his time in the human world.

Shirou is legit my favorite villain
I may be reading too much into Atalanta's shot here. But lets take a look at what her character is like and how it affected her during and after the jack jeanne fight. She wants a better world for kids and thought that years in the future it would happen. Jacks phamtasm broke that and worse still jack dying was absolutely nessecary she knew it jeanne knew it everynody knew it anf yet she still wanted to protect them. Her shot being alone doing nothing shows just how alone she is in this grail war wanting to fight for something yet never being able to do anything for it. Her head being down shows a resognation to the whole thing.
That said in regards to apocrypha as a whole its flawed but it was damn well worth my time. In fact my biggest issue with apocrypha is the hanging gardens radar profile. Seriously in the time period apocrypha takes place in Romania has already joined NATO and had built radar facilities HOW HAS NO ONE NOTICED THE FLYING DOOM FORTRESS.

Umm KARNA VS SIEGFRIED ep like 2 LITTERALLY LASTED HOURS AND KARNA. Also karna used brahmastra kundala that is equivalent to fission bomb. Vasvi Shakti is the sun on earth in one concentrated rift of his spear.

I feel like you have a point with the shots but as for the theme, I see the 2nd op as more common without any risks taken in the music. There are musical elements that are more relevant in the 1st theme that I am biased to. For example long runs and an amazing sequence.
Yeah, I feel like if the first OP had the same level of attention to detail in the animation as Ash I'd have loved it.

Really good analysis. I still personally prefer the original OP over this one, just because the song got me really hyped for a fuck-huge holy grail war. The scale was too much for the show to really cover though unfortunately. Sometimes less really is more.
i don't know about appreciating the show cause again looking at it as a whole whether it'd be the anime or light novel this was really going all over the place with no real time to develop on what's going on and the lack of motivations from the cast doesn't help either. like yeah saving the world at least from one side's perspective is noble and heroic but the thing that really makes the servants stand out from their masters is that they were once alive and human and not really counting those who made the class of ruler such as jeanne and shirou for the most part, all servants have a form of regret or desire something that they are willing to risk fighting for it. whether it'd for an ideal, a thrill, holding up certain beliefs that may not fit with the modern era like how you can argue gilgamesh was somewhat villainous but you can't really say his view point was wrong in how he viewed the modern human era.
Now i do agree with what you said about Jeanne finding purpose in why she was summoned it's just the author of the story and writing staff of the anime who could have improved it didn't really express that properly or did much to show she has her own levels of conflict that would justify it. instead we basically got what we normally see in SAO which doesn't resonate for a lot of people. in the case of Shirou while it's likely he may have broken the rules to keep his ruler status while living on earth but at the same time the fact he could still be considered a saint worthy to be a ruler shows that his views and actions weren't wrong either which is another problem in apocrypha I hope you'll do a video discussion on one of these days.
now as for the opening while I wouldn't really say Ash is a song I enjoyed just for the fact the attempted dark tone the show tried to have just really feels off or resonates with me in the same way an opening like the first one would since the song fit with what apocrypha was initially trying to be. same with how brave shine in UBW resonated with a lot of people and even a background song like Last Stardust. in terms of visuals I didn't have a problem with opening 1 since when you have a large cast then it was what I expected and like how Ufotable managed to do in UBW and Zero it showed us the cast but tried to not really give away who's gonna stick around or bite the dust opening 2's visuals for apocrypha...granted i didn't really give it much thought but that's mostly cause the narrative of apocrypha as a whole didn't give me reason to care in the first place. I wish half of what you said was what we got but i really can't see myself feeling the same way about opening 2 as opposed to saying opening 1 just felt more natural and had the better tone at least in terms of what it was initially promoting itself to claim it was gonna be before we saw or read the final product.
sorry if that was long or out of topic in some areas but i thought it was also a bit of a discussion point. there's a lot I want to say but I'll leave that for when you decide to do a apocrypha discussion topic as a whole on a video or something in the future. still looking forward to your 2nd episode of abridged apocrypha. no rush take your time just saying looking forward to that too.
I honestly agree with this. Although I still like the first OP, the song itself was meh. Apocrypha in my mind is a good show if flawed. It was worth my time and I wouldn't mind watching it again. This was a well made analysis of the second OP. Great work. (Also, Jack's pantless state is perfect. I will not back down from that. XD)

Yeah tbh as much as I hate fan service and loli stuff Jack is like the one example where I don't mind as much. She's a child and acts all innocent but has this eerie calm yet sadistic and dangerous side, so the fact she's almost sexualised in a creepy way but still very threatening sorta works. besides its not like it's TOO distracting
Can we also take a moment to appreciate how fuckin' dope KOE was? Still listening to it months later and it still gives me chills man.

Ok, Ash definitely has more meticulous symbolism, but just going off the ops as songs, I would much rather listen to Eiyuu Unmei no Uta- (I'm pretty sure that's what it's called, the first opening)

This essay was better than the actual show. I mean, that's not saying much since the show dropped the ball hard halfway through (and had some fights that looked like they were animated in Flash) and this analysis was super interesting, but still.
I also liked that quick flash of "can jack please have pants" because I hate her fanservicey loli design. She's an interesting Servant, but I don't like looking at her.

Totally agreed. If everyone in the show was as well-executed as Mordred, maybe we'd be better off, but so many characters in this show either get totally shafted or done so generically they don't even stand out.
BlueDrakmaVA Even then Mordred is the best almost by comparison alone. Is not just the characters but the overall work and setting what comes across as poorly executed. Rulers talks of higher purpose and duty clash with the faceless, careless and never hinted presence of ‘God’ an so on

From what I've gathered got the comments here that I did read, I think J agree with what (looks to be) the majority opinion is. I agree that the second opening itself is better, but I much prefer the opening song of the first OP.
It has this gothic style that's eerily calm, but still pumps you up, and as of right now it's probably my favorite anime OP.
The music for the second is good, but as others have said, it feels rather generic, which is why I've always preferred the first one. I also really enjoy the opening shot of the chessboard with the pieces aligned.
Even without any of these analises, I still always prefered the second OP *by far* compared to the first one, simply because *it felt more emotional.*
The first OP was more like, "get hype for the Holy Grail War", but it didn't really resonate with me. It was cool, but I didn't really care for any of the characters shown.
OP 2 is the complete opposite. The melody is calmer and emphasizes much more the struggle and doubts the characters are going through. It makes me feel like "oh no, these are characters I really like, but something very sad is going to happen to them."

You did a good job breaking down OP 2, and it made me appreciate all the details, but im gonna have to disagree with what you said about the first one. I prefer it to the second and feel like some of the shots actually are very meaningful to the show's/characters' themes, but mostly there's just something about Ash that i can't like, and I think its the chorus, the song sorta ramps up and gets hype but drops into an unsaisfying level of cheeriness

I never watched the dub for the fate apocrypha series as i thought it needed an abridged series to fix A1's lack of budget.

The dub's pretty good from what I've seen. If the show was actual worth it, I probably would have gone back and rewatched it in dub. But it wasn't, so I didn't.
....still annoyed that the terrible Sieg/Ruler romance was the focus of the show, and not Kairi and Mordred's fantastic friendship since they're the only characters to actually get development in the show...

I liked the concepts and structure of the most interesting timeline other than prisma illya and heaven's feel. But the main problem is that sieg is a victim of budget cuts i know that is shoe horned in with romance in the anime.
I like the books as they explain that ruler thinks he is cute as he is perfect as a creation. She also had to live with him when she first met sturges.
I think the reason she fell in love with him is his similarities to shirou but instead of healing abilities and attuning him to UBW and trace. His implant is Siegfried's heart which is a magic core & Fran's Prayer (NP).
Sieg did not get a connection to god via dreams but he was given massive amounts of power to give salvation to his Species. But she understood his dream would cause him to die alone and probably on the battlefield upset of those he would not save like Toole. She wanted him to survive as that is what she swore.
And she took a special interest in him and used gods playing board a ruler skill that allows a map with all the active servants and their stats on the board. She checked that when Siegfried dies that his state is ambiguous. But when she checks again and Siegfried has been revived. It upsets her.
I still think if ufotable had this as a actual anime / movies it would be amazing.
I've actually heard that the light novels were worse than the anime. Something about Sieg asking Ruler if Servants can get pregnant? Either way, I don't know if even Ufotable could make this work without completely rewriting the story. There's only so much you can do with an adaptation, and while the animation certainly had issues (*cough* Sieg vs. Karna final *cough* Aatalanta vs. Ruler final *cough*), the story is just bad.
I agree that Apocrypha presents an interesting alternate timeline, but it just doesn't do its own premise justice. I also find Prisma Illya's Holy Grail War system pretty interesting, but I have no desire to watch that show since from what I've seen from clips, I wouldn't like that characterization of Illya.

The books are a lot better also the reason why he asks her is that she is a demi servant and this is a joke because when they meet sturges they had to platonically share a room as he thinks they are a couple and only had one spare room anyway.
I've actually tried to find Oath Under Snow, but I haven't been able to. I've seen clips of it, and I know the basics of the plot and how it relates to Prisma Illya proper, but I think at best I've been able to find a version where it's shoved into a corner with like, Viet subs. And I think OUS Shinji being the worst is kinda by a thin margin from what little I've seen. He's already a terrible person and a serial Sakura rapist in Fate/Stay Night, but he gets upgraded into murderer in OUS so *shrug*

@@BlueDrakma Last encore was overall worse but still Hakuno felt a bit better as a protagonist to me than Sieg due to how his internal conflict was portrayed. But even then it does not matter when everything around him does not allow him to shine that much. That and Apocrypha had Mordred.
