I’m a freelance proofreader and I often help students revise academic papers. The plethora of grammatical, punctual, and formatting errors make me think to myself, “How are these people in college?” And here’s the answer. Schools give everyone a pass, whether they perform or not.

I’m telling you, these students can’t even read a syllabus. They get on GroupMe and ask questions that can easily be found on the first page of the syllabus. Not all students are like this and I enjoy reading papers from those who take their education seriously. However, the fact that so many of them clearly got good grades for nothing has me shaking my head.

She wants her kid to remain in HS until he's 30? It took years of not prioritizing education to get her kid to this point. She seems to know that service hours, for instance, are a graduation requirement but has done nothing to make sure that her kid do the service hours....or his assignments....or even show up to class. It's a frustrating, no win situation.

What was the mother doing with the student to strengthen his education? Did she create a volunteer activity or require him to find it and report back to her? Did she physically go to his volunteer activity and supervise then log the time he worked? This can be done anytime the student isn’t in school. Why wasn’t this mother more proactive during the gathering of community service hours instead of waiting until the report card came out? If the student feels he isn’t getting a volunteer job, shouldn’t he be the first to initiate the activity? Moral to story. If you have ONE child or fifteen, don’t be too busy to communicate with the school and your child. Don’t expect “the system” to raise your child!

There are 4 teachers in my family and one of the biggest issues besides just not providing enough resources and working 50+ hour work weeks (although this has pretty much always been the case), and particularly a worsening issue is parental involvement and responsibility in their child's education. Less parents showing up for parent teacher conferences. Parents want home school for their kids but many parents don't wanna have to put real effort into that. Parents are mad about curriculum, grades, etc but aren't communicating with their children or aren't meeting their children's educational needs to keep them from struggling. Basically it all comes down to: I want public school teachers to be my child's parent at school but I don't want public school teachers to be my child's parent at school.

@@guy-tn2ud Not all teachers are fortunate enough to have union representation. A corrupt principal can very easily falsify paperwork that will cost a non-union teacher their job and their license. It's also not uncommon for corrupt principals to change the data that a teacher enters, without ever having spoken with the teacher (I've seen that happen in both union and non-union schools).

This is happening across the country. Teachers are not allowed to give failing grades, and if the curriculum is too challenging, the teacher is made to dumb it down so that students can pass. Parents are unaware that their children are well below grade level according to district or state assessments because many achieve Honor Roll because of low grading standards. This is a generation that is under educated and unmotivated to succeed academically aided and abetted by America's educational system.

Being shut out of school for almost 2 years downgraded the importance of attendance and caused children to become obsessed and addicted to devices because of remote learning. Teachers are quitting and retiring in DROVES all over the nation because of this. The attendance of young children in school is at a record low because they can't walk or bring themselves to school. Each year after the Pandemic, the kids are broken in new ways. This years freshmen are utterly unable to work independently or collectively. When told to work on something independently they sit there in suspended animation. They just want teachers to tell them what to put on the paper so that they can pass the class. They don't understand that learning is a verb. They believe that if they do the minimum they'll get by. But copying down notes without engaging the brain is an exercise in futility. The crazy thing is that we educators/math teachers see this issue, and we know that the kids need to be reached in whatever way works. The curriculum we chose is absolutely perfect for the attention-of-a-gnat students - forcing them to work with one another and solve problems as a function of group learning. The school board thinks that we should NOT use the curriculum we want, because "kids need direct instruction." and so they want the type of curriculum that quite clearly is the worst for these kids. I'm 55... they're quoting educational research articles that were published before I was born as their evidence.
Her son is probably not that smart and is a trouble-making kid, so they just want to get rid of him. I teach, and that's what I would do. Just most parents don't catch-on and are very happy.

It makes no sense that the child can get all they need from a few weeks of school that they couldn't get from 9 months of it. Then there is social promotion and no child left behind ...where if a parent can prove that not all of the three pages worth of modification were address then they child can't be held back. In fact, there is so much red tape around failing a child ...that it's just not worth it. I had always believe that grades should be thrown out. If a child can't do this, this, and this ...then they shouldn't pass and it should be written on your report card as such. It also makes it clearer where the child is failing in the class and what they need help with.

The woman blowing off the reporter is ensuring that she continues to get a paycheck by giving average and sub par students passing/excellent grades. If one were to investigate, the overall achievement of the students in that school is so inferior that the school would be shut down if it didn’t cheat.
That is one outstanding mom. She wants her son to earn his diploma, not have it falsified by the school with no real skills. But requiring students to earn 75 community service hours is very unreasonable, especially when courses are demanding and some kids have jobs and other commitments.
That isn't a lot of hours over the course of 4 years. I did the YES Program when I was in school. That was 300 community service hours, of which some limited percentage was allowed to be collecting donations (don't remember exact amount), but the lion's share had to be spending time.
~20 hours per school year is doable. That's about 1-2 nights/month during the school year. Granted, the school should certainly facilitate things for students with other commitments (sports, job, etc.)
I applaud this mother for speaking out and telling the truth. She should be commended for holding her child accountable. Also, exposing the schools for not educating their students!
He is a graduating senior. What she wants is either another year of child support or a free baby sitter. If she is that worried about the community service hours than she will simply have him do them, and only check to make sure some other Child's hours were not falsely given to her son. This is ridiculous and a bit too late to be crying foul
I wish more parents were like her. She understands how important it is for kids to actually be pushed, and work for things, instead of lowering standards or just passing for DEI. It just robs these kids in the long run and holds them back for the rest of their life.
This has nothing to do with DEI. Interesting that that's the first thing you think of. It has to do with not wanting to deal with kids that are not performing and run the risk of being held back which messes with graduation rates. Graduation rates affect a school's accreditation and can lead to an overhaul that can lead to the principal and teachers being fired.
When the students are not passing it also means reduced financial benefits for the school district. Now that the mom has exposed this, let's hope it is thoroughly investigated
I admire this mother who wants only the very best for her son, and she truly understands that he has to have a REAL education to succeed in life. She wants her son to be educated, have doors opened to him, and keep him off the streets or other negativity he could face. She is brave, and her determination to do right by her son is fantastic. We need more parents like her, and our world would be much better today!

One of my sister's neighbors is a high school teacher in a different county. She was complaining that she is NOT allowed, under ANY circumstances, to fail a student. The worst she can give them is a "D" grade. She has been in a situation where a student handed in a test with none of the questions answered -- literally a zero grade -- and she was told to give the student 20 points because they wrote their name correctly in the designated spot at the top of each page. Our education system is a system for sure... but there's very little educational about it if you're a student in a failing school that the higher-ups want to make look better.
When I was in HS, my district had a policy that students couldn’t get an F unless they got a failure warning ⚠️ on the midterm report. So my good honest 10th grade Geometry teacher gave everyone a failure warning, even to those with As. The failure warning policy was stupid, because you could play hooky for the rest of the term, do no homework, and still get a D-.
@@CatholicTraditional That is ridiculous. When I was in high school, the first unexcused absence was an office detention. A second unexcused absence meant an F in the marking period for every class missed. Ten absences in a semester, excused or not (including suspensions), meant Saturday detention to make up missed instruction. Twelve absences for the semester meant you failed regardless of performance or Saturday detention. It was possible to fail three classes and still graduate on time, and students who missed class due to severe medical conditions could be given an exemption from Phys Ed to allow them to make up more classes so they graduate on time, but they would make kids repeat a grade if needed, even in middle school. I had two kids in my 6th grade class who were repeaters, one of whom became a C student the second time (I don't know how the other did, I only know about the one because I was tutoring him).
This happened in Mississippi during corona, a lot of kids were failing because they had to take online classes due to covid restrictions and a lot kids just got passed along. A lot of schools went from f rated to A rated 🤔

I'm a special ed student with a IEP and education level of grade 5 and know more than most. Life and working teaches you more than school ever will. I really learned many people out in the world are very smart but lack common sense. Education is what you make of it not all of it is critical to success.

I'm proud of this woman: standing up for her son and being open and honest. The school administrators deliberately "pass" students so they can report positive results and avoid being terminated. They don't care about the students' future, only about saving their hides.
If the administrators flunked them out and put them on academic withdrawal for not showing up to class, would that be better? It seems as though these kids are being provided the opportunity for an education but are squandering it and the parents are watching them do it. Why should a teacher or administrator lose their job over something that they have zero control over?
@@goofygirl1311 There was a girl in the year behind me who missed several weeks of school because she was injured in a bus accident. She had to reconfigure her classes in order to graduate on time, because that entire semester was a total loss after the time she spent in the hospital. Thankfully, we were on a semester system, so she already passed half the classes for the year before the accident; if we weren't on a semester system, she would've had to repeat the grade. And yes, it sucks to have to repeat a grade for circumstances beyond your control like a hospitalization, but that means they get to finish their education, albeit a year or two later than planned, rather than dropping out because of a medical condition.
This all started with the “no student left behind” movement that happened. Parents were upset because their kids were failing school. The reason a decent chunk of the kids were failing was because they had learning needs that weren’t being addressed. Now it did help to a certain degree with adjusting the curriculum to some of their needs. Buut there’s a nation worth of schools and big cuts made to education spending to fill billionaires and crooked politicians pockets with. And with barely enough funding for a classroom of 35 students to that ONE teacher, theres no wonder why there’s this system doing this just to maintain funding. The school system wouldn’t get the funding they need to educate the kids who are benefiting. Including the special Ed department. The whole national financial system caused the education system to become a black hole where the people who were once forgotten in failure from school are NOW being forgotten in failure of the school educating them but not being responsible for it because they’re doing it to survive as a system. THIS was started by BUSH Jr btw. Which means I can accurately say that having republicans in charge always puts our governmental social systems in jeopardy financially. Hell, dare I say they always drive up our debt? At least the last 3 democrats have pulled us out of debt or close to even. Last 4 republicans drove us into extreme debt during their presidencies. Just saying, you wanna fix the schools, fix the root of the problem. Stop voting for people who will just make the problem worse until there’s nothing left of what you’re trying to fix
This was happening way before No Child Left Behind, in the 80s and 90s several schools had graduating seniors reading on a 3rd grade level. They don't care.

I live in a small Connecticut town of 3,400 residents; last year it was revealed that only TWO sixth graders could read, write, or perform arithmetic at their grade level; all others were remedial at best. There was such a community outcry from the parents that the town hall meeting following that revelation lasted several hours longer than scheduled because EVERY parent was up in arms about it and wanted to speak about it. I don't care what messaging we're being force-fed from various governmental talking heads - parents DO have a say in what goes on in the classroom, and have every right to INSIST that their grievances be addressed IMMEDIATELY. I'm old enough to remember everyone quoting Whitney Houston: "I believe the children are our future, teach them well and let them lead the way." Today's children will be the ones responsible for running our nation in the years to come, it is imperative that we educate them and give them the tools they need to be successful in life.
This happened a lot during the pandemic with teachers and students not prepared or suitable for online learning. My sons school ended up giving the kids pass/fails and passed most of them with disgusting grades (my son was one of them).

Falsifying good grades is NOT going to help these kids in the future. When they make it to college and don’t know any of the basics they are expected to already know, they are going to struggle so much. It’s not fair to them.

This is all thanks to no child left behind. Kids graduate just because they show up to class. As a professor in English I have had more kids come to class that never read a book until my class. Some kids never do an assignment but come to class. When they fail, I get a call from the student who explains he never missed a class. I respond I have nothing to grade, you haven't done any assignments. It's heartbreaking
Unfortunately the educational system has a major crisis on its hands. My sister is a Special Ed teacher and often speaks about IEPs and how there are teachers who are causing her job to be extremely difficult because of their delay (procrastination) to put together their lesson plans. Also, most students shuffled her way shouldn't be consider for IEPs but there are teachers who fail to teach them accordingly or accommodate the student. We often have discussions about todays kids especially those who enter 1st year of college and not being prepared when they think that they are. It's a rude awakening and results in them dealing with emotional setbacks like anxiety and depression. I am a parent of two and have questioned them numerous of times about homework, papers, essays and so forth because I recall the amount of time and effort it took me to complete a math equation on several papers and having to construct a 5 or more page paper. Of course, I am not naïve that this is an entirely different generation and people learn differently but with 2 currently in college its a wake call for them both. I understand the use of technology but it seems like kids today are to reliant of those things and it takes away the work ethic and certain skills that contribute to overall learning. Basically anything worth having such as a college education with a degree requires much effort and it will not be easy, it should be challenging to ensure that you are getting your money's worth as well.
Its really irritating if you’re a student in a class where the professor has clearly watered it down and has no passion about what they are teaching because of lack of student engagement, but you were actually interested in that class and are paying thousands to take it…
I'm 50+ and they did something similar to me way back in my HS. I didn't attend classes and didn't do the work, but only ONE teacher ever made a point of punishing me for it.
Politicians and leaders should not being able to walk away like that. They need to answer to the people. If not, replace them with someone who actually cares and isn’t in it for the money.
This is appalling. Everyone that signed off on these changes should be fired or in jail. I suspect that the few good teachers are under durress in those schools.
stuff like this is happening everywhere. my sons school wanted to pass him to the next grade even though he had failed 2 classes on a year he decided to slack. he was and AB student that just knew he didnt have to turn in his work. I had to fight to hold him back. He was shocked and knew I wasnt going to sit with him for slacking. the next year he went back to A's and B's. problem solved. I also discovered a friends 10th grade son could barely read at 5th grade level. without naming him I wrote a very damning letter to his school expressing my disgust they were just pushing these kids through. I also had a conversation with my friends about it and they were embarrassed but took action with him and the school. our public schools need to be held to account but most of parents like this woman needs to stand up for their childrens education or fail in life.
This mother has the right to complain. Suppose now the school realized they made the error and they wanted to change it? That means he would have to do this all over again. So unfair and so not right
That is what a great mom looks like. So many people would take the grades or not show any interest, but she wants to make sure her son is prepared for the future and not just be a drain for the system. Solid parenting. People should learn from her.

Really? I'm going to be 41 next month and I had plenty of teachers who had no problem giving me failing and D marks when I deserved them. I even had to repeat 7th grade. This may not be "new" but it in no way was anywhere near as common in our day as it has been recently.

Not in MD, but schools are only concerned about assessment test scores. They coach them on passing those tests and not much else. Kids aren't being educated, they're being trained to pass a arbitrary test.
When my daughter was in elementary and jr high school going to a private school she would come home and have 3-4 hours of homework a night, the kids getting off the bus that went to the public schools wouldn't even have backpacks or books with them. In High School (public) my daughter finished all the graduation requirements for an honors diploma easily in two years and then took all college classes for the last two years at a nearby community college. The public schools have definitely changed, it was a completely different experience than what I went through in the 70's and 80's.
These are things that caused many of us Homeschool. Parents/communities should start making inquires when they see whole classrooms passing but no one can read/write/do basic math w/o a calculator. Our families buy books & other ed tools, have required reading, and test our students. Knowledge is Powere.
This is nothing new...I graduated in 1986 and watched underperforming kids get passed along all the time. The new thing is a parent actually giving a crap.
I remember stories when Covid hit and remote learning started. Parents were shocked at how far behind their kids were. We can debate whether or not they should have known, but the point is these kids were being pushed through the system without the basics they would need to survive and make a living. In many cases-without anyone knowing.
I've worked at an urban school that was 90% black, kids would graduate being functionally illiterate because they would just pass them along to make the numbers look good.
This goes on in a lot of under performing public schools. Teachers care more about playing with kids than teaching them. Then they have to over inflate their scores to cover for failures

When I was in 9th grade, my mom was going to sue my school and they deleted all of my student records so that she couldn't prove I was ever a student there. Luckily I had transcripts printed beforehand. Moved to a different school. But I think about that a lot.

This happened at a college I attended online that was based in Ohio. I would check my work and grades, and almost daily I would see a grade drop, and then raise and then drop again. I reached out the the professors involved (it was happening jn over half my classes) and the answer I got was “ we are playing with the grades we will be done In a week. For almost a solid year the grades did not reflecting my actual knowledge level.
I believe this is happening in a lot more places than Baltimore. In Florida, a school gets a grade depending on how many students do well. I question the A schools in Florida. Its disgusting behavior has really diminished the quality of education.
This is exactly what happens when funding depends on getting that kid passed regardless of his/her performance. Push them through, cash the check and then move on to the next kid. And why won't the CEO stop and have a conversation? I think we all know why.
Wow, this is concerning! I'm really shocked to see how many students are being given good grades and (in this case) more than the minimum service hours, even when they barely (if even did) showed up to school! And seeing that the school board didn't answer anybody's questions puts a bad taste in my mouth.

If the student feels he isn’t getting a volunteer job, shouldn’t he be the first to initiate the activity? Moral to story. If you have ONE child or fifteen, don’t be too busy to communicate with the school and your child. Don’t expect “the system” to raise your child!

There are 4 teachers in my family and one of the biggest issues besides just not providing enough resources and working 50+ hour work weeks (although this has pretty much always been the case), and particularly a worsening issue is parental involvement and responsibility in their child's education. Less parents showing up for parent teacher conferences. Parents want home school for their kids but many parents don't wanna have to put real effort into that. Parents are mad about curriculum, grades, etc but aren't communicating with their children or aren't meeting their children's educational needs to keep them from struggling. Basically it all comes down to: I want public school teachers to be my child's parent at school but I don't want public school teachers to be my child's parent at school.

It's also not uncommon for corrupt principals to change the data that a teacher enters, without ever having spoken with the teacher (I've seen that happen in both union and non-union schools).

This is happening across the country. Teachers are not allowed to give failing grades, and if the curriculum is too challenging, the teacher is made to dumb it down so that students can pass. Parents are unaware that their children are well below grade level according to district or state assessments because many achieve Honor Roll because of low grading standards. This is a generation that is under educated and unmotivated to succeed academically aided and abetted by America's educational system.

Each year after the Pandemic, the kids are broken in new ways. This years freshmen are utterly unable to work independently or collectively. When told to work on something independently they sit there in suspended animation. They just want teachers to tell them what to put on the paper so that they can pass the class. They don't understand that learning is a verb. They believe that if they do the minimum they'll get by. But copying down notes without engaging the brain is an exercise in futility. The crazy thing is that we educators/math teachers see this issue, and we know that the kids need to be reached in whatever way works. The curriculum we chose is absolutely perfect for the attention-of-a-gnat students - forcing them to work with one another and solve problems as a function of group learning. The school board thinks that we should NOT use the curriculum we want, because "kids need direct instruction." and so they want the type of curriculum that quite clearly is the worst for these kids. I'm 55... they're quoting educational research articles that were published before I was born as their evidence.

I had always believe that grades should be thrown out.
If a child can't do this, this, and this ...then they shouldn't pass and it should be written on your report card as such.

If one were to investigate, the overall achievement of the students in that school is so inferior that the school would be shut down if it didn’t cheat.
That is one outstanding mom. She wants her son to earn his diploma, not have it falsified by the school with no real skills. But requiring students to earn 75 community service hours is very unreasonable, especially when courses are demanding and some kids have jobs and other commitments.

That isn't a lot of hours over the course of 4 years. I did the YES Program when I was in school. That was 300 community service hours, of which some limited percentage was allowed to be collecting donations (don't remember exact amount), but the lion's share had to be spending time.
~20 hours per school year is doable. That's about 1-2 nights/month during the school year. Granted, the school should certainly facilitate things for students with other commitments (sports, job, etc.)

It has to do with not wanting to deal with kids that are not performing and run the risk of being held back which messes with graduation rates. Graduation rates affect a school's accreditation and can lead to an overhaul that can lead to the principal and teachers being fired.
When the students are not passing it also means reduced financial benefits for the school district. Now that the mom has exposed this, let's hope it is thoroughly investigated

One of my sister's neighbors is a high school teacher in a different county. She was complaining that she is NOT allowed, under ANY circumstances, to fail a student. The worst she can give them is a "D" grade. She has been in a situation where a student handed in a test with none of the questions answered -- literally a zero grade -- and she was told to give the student 20 points because they wrote their name correctly in the designated spot at the top of each page. Our education system is a system for sure... but there's very little educational about it if you're a student in a failing school that the higher-ups want to make look better.
When I was in HS, my district had a policy that students couldn’t get an F unless they got a failure warning ⚠️ on the midterm report. So my good honest 10th grade Geometry teacher gave everyone a failure warning, even to those with As. The failure warning policy was stupid, because you could play hooky for the rest of the term, do no homework, and still get a D-.

A second unexcused absence meant an F in the marking period for every class missed. Ten absences in a semester, excused or not (including suspensions), meant Saturday detention to make up missed instruction. Twelve absences for the semester meant you failed regardless of performance or Saturday detention. It was possible to fail three classes and still graduate on time, and students who missed class due to severe medical conditions could be given an exemption from Phys Ed to allow them to make up more classes so they graduate on time, but they would make kids repeat a grade if needed, even in middle school. I had two kids in my 6th grade class who were repeaters, one of whom became a C student the second time (I don't know how the other did, I only know about the one because I was tutoring him).
This happened in Mississippi during corona, a lot of kids were failing because they had to take online classes due to covid restrictions and a lot kids just got passed along. A lot of schools went from f rated to A rated 🤔

She had to reconfigure her classes in order to graduate on time, because that entire semester was a total loss after the time she spent in the hospital. Thankfully, we were on a semester system, so she already passed half the classes for the year before the accident; if we weren't on a semester system, she would've had to repeat the grade. And yes, it sucks to have to repeat a grade for circumstances beyond your control like a hospitalization, but that means they get to finish their education, albeit a year or two later than planned, rather than dropping out because of a medical condition.
This all started with the “no student left behind” movement that happened. Parents were upset because their kids were failing school. The reason a decent chunk of the kids were failing was because they had learning needs that weren’t being addressed. Now it did help to a certain degree with adjusting the curriculum to some of their needs. Buut there’s a nation worth of schools and big cuts made to education spending to fill billionaires and crooked politicians pockets with. And with barely enough funding for a classroom of 35 students to that ONE teacher, theres no wonder why there’s this system doing this just to maintain funding. The school system wouldn’t get the funding they need to educate the kids who are benefiting. Including the special Ed department. The whole national financial system caused the education system to become a black hole where the people who were once forgotten in failure from school are NOW being forgotten in failure of the school educating them but not being responsible for it because they’re doing it to survive as a system. THIS was started by BUSH Jr btw. Which means I can accurately say that having republicans in charge always puts our governmental social systems in jeopardy financially. Hell, dare I say they always drive up our debt? At least the last 3 democrats have pulled us out of debt or close to even. Last 4 republicans drove us into extreme debt during their presidencies. Just saying, you wanna fix the schools, fix the root of the problem. Stop voting for people who will just make the problem worse until there’s nothing left of what you’re trying to fix

I live in a small Connecticut town of 3,400 residents; last year it was revealed that only TWO sixth graders could read, write, or perform arithmetic at their grade level; all others were remedial at best. There was such a community outcry from the parents that the town hall meeting following that revelation lasted several hours longer than scheduled because EVERY parent was up in arms about it and wanted to speak about it.
I don't care what messaging we're being force-fed from various governmental talking heads - parents DO have a say in what goes on in the classroom, and have every right to INSIST that their grievances be addressed IMMEDIATELY. I'm old enough to remember everyone quoting Whitney Houston: "I believe the children are our future, teach them well and let them lead the way." Today's children will be the ones responsible for running our nation in the years to come, it is imperative that we educate them and give them the tools they need to be successful in life.

When they fail, I get a call from the student who explains he never missed a class. I respond I have nothing to grade, you haven't done any assignments. It's heartbreaking
Unfortunately the educational system has a major crisis on its hands. My sister is a Special Ed teacher and often speaks about IEPs and how there are teachers who are causing her job to be extremely difficult because of their delay (procrastination) to put together their lesson plans. Also, most students shuffled her way shouldn't be consider for IEPs but there are teachers who fail to teach them accordingly or accommodate the student. We often have discussions about todays kids especially those who enter 1st year of college and not being prepared when they think that they are. It's a rude awakening and results in them dealing with emotional setbacks like anxiety and depression. I am a parent of two and have questioned them numerous of times about homework, papers, essays and so forth because I recall the amount of time and effort it took me to complete a math equation on several papers and having to construct a 5 or more page paper. Of course, I am not naïve that this is an entirely different generation and people learn differently but with 2 currently in college its a wake call for them both. I understand the use of technology but it seems like kids today are to reliant of those things and it takes away the work ethic and certain skills that contribute to overall learning. Basically anything worth having such as a college education with a degree requires much effort and it will not be easy, it should be challenging to ensure that you are getting your money's worth as well.

Its really irritating if you’re a student in a class where the professor has clearly watered it down and has no passion about what they are teaching because of lack of student engagement, but you were actually interested in that class and are paying thousands to take it…

The school CEO sounded so nervous and phoney. Her voice was so high pitch as she tried to run out of there and hide.
I'm 50+ and they did something similar to me way back in my HS. I didn't attend classes and didn't do the work, but only ONE teacher ever made a point of punishing me for it.
This mother deservs the Nobel Prize. She is stnading up for all the others that are afarid or just won't stand up. God Bless You. Jim

Politicians and leaders should not being able to walk away like that. They need to answer to the people. If not, replace them with someone who actually cares and isn’t in it for the money.
This is what happens when funding is tied to how well the students do.
This is appalling. Everyone that signed off on these changes should be fired or in jail. I suspect that the few good teachers are under durress in those schools.

stuff like this is happening everywhere. my sons school wanted to pass him to the next grade even though he had failed 2 classes on a year he decided to slack. he was and AB student that just knew he didnt have to turn in his work. I had to fight to hold him back. He was shocked and knew I wasnt going to sit with him for slacking. the next year he went back to A's and B's. problem solved. I also discovered a friends 10th grade son could barely read at 5th grade level. without naming him I wrote a very damning letter to his school expressing my disgust they were just pushing these kids through. I also had a conversation with my friends about it and they were embarrassed but took action with him and the school. our public schools need to be held to account but most of parents like this woman needs to stand up for their childrens education or fail in life.
This mother has the right to complain. Suppose now the school realized they made the error and they wanted to change it? That means he would have to do this all over again. So unfair and so not right
This is why I never sent my kids to a government school.
That is what a great mom looks like. So many people would take the grades or not show any interest, but she wants to make sure her son is prepared for the future and not just be a drain for the system. Solid parenting. People should learn from her.
What an amazing mother and human with integrity. I wish more parents were as responsible and involved in their kids school life. I hope she gets the help she is looking for and more importantly her child gets an education to prepare him for the world and life ahead of him. Bravo Mom ❤

Unfortunately this been going on for years! I’m over 40 and it was going on then. They use to skip kids to higher grades due their age not because they passed. Smh
So true. If you had too many 18 year olds left back due to poor grades it would be a blemish on the teachers in that school - so they pushed them through to thwart any investigation.
Really? I'm going to be 41 next month and I had plenty of teachers who had no problem giving me failing and D marks when I deserved them. I even had to repeat 7th grade. This may not be "new" but it in no way was anywhere near as common in our day as it has been recently.

She isn't as good of a mother as people are giving her credit for. She says her son hasn't earned the accolades but has done nothing to help her son earn those accolades in the first place. Sounds like she is as lazy about her son's education as the school system is.

Not in MD, but schools are only concerned about assessment test scores. They coach them on passing those tests and not much else. Kids aren't being educated, they're being trained to pass a arbitrary test.

@@shawntricewmsthere’s literally no classes. Even in 09 I had 7-8 classes a day and earned all my grades.
When my daughter was in elementary and jr high school going to a private school she would come home and have 3-4 hours of homework a night, the kids getting off the bus that went to the public schools wouldn't even have backpacks or books with them. In High School (public) my daughter finished all the graduation requirements for an honors diploma easily in two years and then took all college classes for the last two years at a nearby community college. The public schools have definitely changed, it was a completely different experience than what I went through in the 70's and 80's.
These are things that caused many of us Homeschool. Parents/communities should start making inquires when they see whole classrooms passing but no one can read/write/do basic math w/o a calculator. Our families buy books & other ed tools, have required reading, and test our students. Knowledge is Powere.

This is nothing new...I graduated in 1986 and watched underperforming kids get passed along all the time. The new thing is a parent actually giving a crap.

I remember stories when Covid hit and remote learning started. Parents were shocked at how far behind their kids were. We can debate whether or not they should have known, but the point is these kids were being pushed through the system without the basics they would need to survive and make a living. In many cases-without anyone knowing.
Proud of Mom. Thankful her son is honest to let his Mom be aware that he did NOT satisfy requirements.

I've worked at an urban school that was 90% black, kids would graduate being functionally illiterate because they would just pass them along to make the numbers look good.

Great on her for speaking up. Schools get away with a lot of shady stuff. When I was in 9th grade, my mom was going to sue my school and they deleted all of my student records so that she couldn't prove I was ever a student there. Luckily I had transcripts printed beforehand. Moved to a different school. But I think about that a lot.

That school ceo is expert in saying absolutely nothing. She didn't answer a damn thing. Needs to be put under oath and answer under penalty of perjury. Im sure They're like other school systems, they don't get money if students don't get good grades, so they put the grades on paper no matter what.
Same happened to me in usa. I attended college and failed all first semester. 2nd semester I dropped out. I wasn't prepared.
First, that requirement of so many hours working in the community is bogus. The rest is pure fraud. And who is it defrauding? The student.
This happened at a college I attended online that was based in Ohio.
I would check my work and grades, and almost daily I would see a grade drop, and then raise and then drop again. I reached out the the professors involved (it was happening jn over half my classes) and the answer I got was “ we are playing with the grades we will be done In a week. For almost a solid year the grades did not reflecting my actual knowledge level.

I believe this is happening in a lot more places than Baltimore. In Florida, a school gets a grade depending on how many students do well. I question the A schools in Florida. Its disgusting behavior has really diminished the quality of education.
In Florida, select have falsified records just like in the video. Even for students who couldn’t attend much due to medical reasons.
What she means to say is "you're free to have any questions you have be blown off by us!"
This is exactly what happens when funding depends on getting that kid passed regardless of his/her performance. Push them through, cash the check and then move on to the next kid. And why won't the CEO stop and have a conversation? I think we all know why.
Wow, this is concerning! I'm really shocked to see how many students are being given good grades and (in this case) more than the minimum service hours, even when they barely (if even did) showed up to school! And seeing that the school board didn't answer anybody's questions puts a bad taste in my mouth.
