Great intro! I have shifted away from miserable all consuming builds with almost no sleep. Now I do an hour or two every night after the kids go to bed. I always wrap it up before midnight because I can NOT operate sleep deprived like I used to. It's AMAZING how much I get done now and I feel better about my life balance.
Those headers are a thing of beauty. Watching your stuff from early RoadKill days and, Mr. Finnegan, you've made noticeable progress in welding prowess.
It is a great day when a car guy can finally make headway on one of his projects work ,life, existing car ,buying new car, balance it’s a tough juggling act you are doing an awesome job
Congratulations, great header fab!! I think because your welding has improved so much you were absolutely not intimidated by that complicated fabrication!! Again, great job! That thing will sound wicked!!!
I got two guys say nice hat while I walked around with the wife in Newport Beach wearing a fsm hat today! Ol Bikes Skinnegan got me styled out for the summer time! thanks!!!
Mike... tuned length on turbos doesn't mean that much any way . Every thing is under pressure .. N/ A .. totally different story .. it's taking shape mate well done
@@FinnegansGarage Hey Mike. Yeah I can imagine, seeing how close everything is. I was more wondering if custom welding something with ports merging together sooner would be possible. Nevertheless looking great as it is.
I thought equal length headers were for 4/6cylinder motors? V8's don't have a symmetrical firing timing (in engine degrees) bank to bank, so there is some crazy math for proper length cylinder to cylinder (and i don't know it). As you have done Mike, just build it to fit and let the turbo and excess HP get you over the line.
This episode was just about as exciting to watch as watching The Care Care Nut install a tonneau cover on his new Tundra... I must say that your video is more rewarding, I and I can't wait to see and hear your '61on the road.
Pretty cool update on the car. Wish you had more time to post more mail time videos. I miss watching you open all that stuff and eat those disgusting snacks lol
Definitely understand about the broken leg Mike! As I’m still recovering from two breaks on the ankle and one break in the leg from rushing to get to a garage to help my stepson, install his new turbo kit on his genesis coupe project. His first car he is excited about! Kind of brings me back to my roots and back to my mini truck in days. I gets me excited to get my 50 Oldsmobile with a 303 rocket motor going! Finally weight-bearing for a week after 12 weeks of couch duty definitely not fun! Love love your videos, man! Been watching for a while tried with him to meet you guys at Woodward dream cruise before M1 concourse. Keep up the awesome work! Oh yeah I’m one Rod and 28 screws in my leg definitely not fun!
Mike, little cheapy tip I’ve used. If you need a HD spacer for stuff, I’ve used strips of the rubber ramp they put under carpets. It has a slight rib on one side and tapers from a thin 1/8” to about 1-1/2” thick. You can pull a thin strip of it between stuff like your header tubes until it’s perfect and it’ll survive quite a bit of heat and crap. Also, you can keep wider strips for chocks or even a ramp transition instead of pieces of wood, when needed. They’re usually free in the dumpster of carpet install places.
I'm Only 4mins into the video and the "Muzak" you're making with your ... Umm ... 'Tubes' is almost .. well .. Spiritual ! ! And Just Listening to the Groove, I Started to move (right after I opened another beer..) & this weird spiritual, Interpretive dance just kind of Happened ... And Just Wow Dude, I was into it ya know !!? And then I closed my eyes as I was Dancing Interactively, Spiritually, & running out of Beer ... I fell off my back porch ... After I hit the ground, I wondered if your welds were better than my dancing ... yes, yes they are ... And You'll be hearing from My attorney.. P.S. - I Loved the Lyrics ..
Nice headers, they remind me of a model A coupe named Back Seat Betty. They made headers to resemble the headers on a wright cyclone radial engine from a B-17. Though theirs was for mor show than functionality.
I just called out what you were going to be using their Mike! I've been an exhaust guy for over 30 years and I called it out three and four inch bends! 😂😂😂
WOW 😲 cool, the Cadillac is finally coming together. I've been waiting years to see this thing cruise down the street. Thanks for getting this sweet ride back on the road again. Thanks for the video 📸.
Hey going good and making progress. Tip… you could have walked the cup over that weld at the collector to shrink it or draw it back in place. So you possibly wouldn’t need to cut the other welds. Also if you’re needing to cut fittings apart cut them in the center of your welds. That way you’re not shortening any thing and if you grind the weld down you can weld over what’s left of the old weld. Basically hiding your mistakes
Oh, and I'm not concerned with unequal lengths of the pipes. I would have a slight concern with the short distance between multiple direction changes. This will possibly cause turbulence to limit the flow and not allow the heat to exit as well. I guess we will see if this is a legitimate issue when you mat it.
Headers look great. You had a load of stuff to work around, thru and under. Being blown, equal length doesn't matter much. They can sure be a pile of good looking spaghetti though.
And you had to say, " the hard part is done"..Header looks great with all the access. Keep crankin' on the cadi dragster. Will it go to Road Kill Nights?
Nice job. Making headers is a real art form. BTW you really don't want to bottom out socket welds all the way. They are typically slightly gapped to allow for pipe expansion when heated so as not to stress crack the welds. See ASME section III and ASME B31.1
Best turbo drain fitting ever built from True North Turbos, its an extender so you dont need a custom stinking wrench to tighten it not quite enough to stop all the leaks....
Equal length/max flow is not just for performance. You can have the best of the best engine, the shiniest turbos and STILL mess it up by simply fumbling the pipework. Although with this car, it might be for the best to melt half of the pistons and valves before 660 mark, to save that body from flip, which it will do on full power pull, when those rear tires jam into those wheel wells.
Great video Mike! I wouldn't worry about equal length. Due to the firing order and exhaust pulses, equal length headers are actually never correct. The exhaust pulses don't happen equally, across the bank. So it's kinda pointless, and was pushed as a selling tactic, originally.. Because it sounded good....
The size of a Caddy is huge but hearing you say it is a tight fit in the engine bay is questioned by my friends until you look at the design all the space is in the trunk and cabin for the comfort of the occupents and hauling luggage and pointed it out to fellow UK petrol heads who questioned your statement no room under the hood. Glad to see you back on this build, your SEMA build not my bag along with motor builds I was dragged up with my father and his brother my uncle drag racing so I learnt to build V8s by age fifteen and was taught to keep everything clean and could lay out the correct tools for the job on a baze covered tray and when used either wiped and put back in order to use next or put away by age ten, so yes by eighteen I was done with motor builds, although i do build 5th scale gas offroad trucks and buggies but buy in my motors from my trusted engine builder, so did not get entirely out of working on vehicles just on a smaller scale mainly due to badly breaking my back doing Enduro racing. Keep up the good work love your builds I am questioning the latest build would it not have been better to start from scratch and build a new chassis, just a thought.
Another video of you making headers!!!!????? If you have seen one header being made you have seen them all! I miss 12 volt Dave!!! I miss you actually doing things. I wait all week for you to drop another video and feel disappointed more often than not. Keep up the great content?

I'm also wondering justification of this complexity over something log style. Simply dumping all ports into one.
Could just have made a nice log manifold.
@UKMechanicit looks like shit 💩 😂
@@exxorcet i tried three different sizes of log manifolds and none would clear the chassis of the car.

Mike, you should have used another mounting flange on your bench weld to keep the other end of the tube from moving.

Header building 101 don't weld anything until it all fits together, tacks only, then start welding from the flange out
Love this build. BTW- no one uses gaskets between the flange and turbo.
