    Alec Guinness was 63 in “A New Hope”, Ewan McGregor is 51 in “Obi-Wan Kenobi” (10 years before ANH). So the age matches up pretty closely

    • @backpacker3421

      But they look nothing like 10 years apart. It's a generational thing. Poor diets and tons of smoking in post WW-II era. We're not living longer these days, but we are staying healthier and looking better much later in life.. in general. By today's standards, if you met Alec Guiness on the street and had to guess his age, no way you'd say early 60's unless you were trying to be kind.

    • @randalscott7224
      @randalscott7224 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Life on Tatooine must be harsh, Owen and Beru Lars looked much older than the ten years between this and A New Hope. Luke too looked older than your average 20 year old, Mark Hamil being 26 when shooting ANH. Carrie Fisher was a bit closer to her character's age at 21, but then a Princess of Alderaan would have had a less harsh life.

      I don't know if Ewan McGregor will achieve Alec Guinness-level wrinkles in 10 years time, but I bet if they cut his hair and let it go grey/white, he could look a lot closer to Guinness.

      it was actually right there in the final episode... before then, from the moment he knew... he saw Vader as his old student Anakin... and clings to the hope that his former padawan & friend was still in there somewhere. Their last duel in the episode essentially made it clear to him that there was no trace of the person he knew... so no hope of redemption.
      ~though you would wonder why Vader wouldn't run him through with his sabre or crush his old master with his hate & pain... sadly, the plot armor is strong in Kenobi... it is his show after all
      ~it could be a reason why he ended up developing his sabre hand cutting technique down the road :p

    My only issue with this finale is the fact that Obi-Wan just chooses to walk away rather than try to finish Vader off. This is the moment when he finally accepts that Anakin is truly gone (which we fans all know he was wrong about). Logically, it does not make sense for him to leave Vader alive if he has a choice, because of how much future harm Vader can do. Obviously Vader can't die in this show, so I think what they should have done was have Obi-Wan sense that Luke was in danger as he was preparing to finish Vader (who still would have had some fight in him to drag the duel out longer), forcing Obi-Wan to choose to try to save Luke instead of killing Vader. This would spare Vader so Luke could eventually save him in Return of the Jedi.

  • @tophlaw4274
    @tophlaw4274 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    for someone feared across the galaxy far far away, Vader kept leaving people who can potentially do him harm alive in this series... sure... he burried his former master under (let's say) a ton of rock... but surely as sensitive in the force as he was, he could sense Kenobi using the force to hold the rock back? It wouldn've made more sense to stand there and wait for the old general's will to break & succumb to his tomb.... walking away like that was just illogical as arrogant as he was... it's not like he had somewhere pressing to go to... just another way for Kenobi to 'surprise' him later & turn the tide...
    ... the battle reminded me of those old cheesy WWF bouts I ate up as a kid... where the 'hero' wrestler would be beaten down & come back swinging with a miraculously overpowering second wind to win the match.

    • @tophlaw4274
      @tophlaw4274 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ... oh... btw, while they were chasing after the Path's survivors, it made no sense that they had to break off their chase as Vader wanted to go at it alone and they could easily send out Tie Fighters (yeesh, they don't have the fuel to send out Tie Fighters???) to chase down the transport or use the fighters to chase down the drop ship (which they could've used to allow some of the refugees to escape... the bloody thing had a working hyperdrive?!? --eyerolling duh???)

      Yes, but we aren't aging the same as people from a generation or two ago. All the tobacco and poor diets. No joke. Not too long ago I was watching a Johnny Carson interview and he was comparing ages with his guest. I was thinking they both look to be about 65. They were 50 or thereabouts. Guinness in New Hope looks like a modern day 70-75.

    I know many people didn't like the first episodes but they needed the build-up for the AWESOME payoffs of episodes 5 and 6. The only weak point of the series is the music IMO, if we had Jhon Williams with new music it would have been an awesome series all along. Music plays a lot in our emotions. I think Disney's disuse of brass and timpani for the new stuff's music is hurting due to the comparison of the original stuff.
    I think the reason they only used the Imperial march at the end was that until that point Obi-Wan was facing Anader, a transition between the hero and the villain, the dying throes of the man he was. The broken mask shows that divide. Once he's back he is fully Vader and that's why they couldn't use the Imperial march before since he finally literally buried his past in this last duel.
    Btw I think both the Reeva/Vader duel and the Obi-wan/Vader duel of this episode are probably the best duels of all Star Wars, they would have been even greater with a more iconic theme to improve them. I think I just love how they treated Vader's fighting style in this, it feels brutal, visceral, and efficient. It shows all the terror that was Vader during his hunt against the Jedi and I can totally see him murdering all these ballet dancers.

    Don't forget that when Obi Wan is saying goodbye to Leia he tells her that they have to pretend like they don't know each other - which totally explains why in Ep.4 Leia refers to him as "general kenobi" and says that "years ago you served with my father in the clone wars" as opposed to "Hey remember me? that girl you helped all those years ago when we were running from the inquisitors with those escaped jedi?" Smart move to make sure everything stays canon in the original trilogy.

    It really feels like the whole series was just killing time and checking off story points so it could get to that final duel...and I'm perfectly fine with that. It was everything it should have been and more and I loved it so freaking much. The mixing of voices and the lighting was incredible. I think Hayden managed to get the redemption he was after as well because without his subtle rage telling Obi Wan that he killed Anakin you can mess around with the voices all the live long day, it will never work without a solid performance. Just look at the "birth" of Vader at the end of Revenge of The Sith. When he stumbles out like Frankenstein's monster and says the "NNNNOOOOOOOO!!" heard around the world it was also laughed at around the world. Everyone who has seen his other work (I'm never going to stop suggesting people watch Shattered Glass for what was my favourite Hayden Christensen performance till now) knew he could do it and I'm happy for him that he had the chance. I was just thinking even when he showed up to kill the younglings his physical performance even in that small moment was much better. In 'Revenge' he was more like a pouting teenager. You could really see the determination and darkness on his face but, again, it was subtle. Well done everyone. You somehow gave us exactly what we wanted and what the show needed as it stuck the landing.

    I know some people had their problems with this show, but I didn't. I loved it, and I wasn't a fan of the Prequels either.
    After playing through Jedi Fallen Order; twice, and seeing how both Cal and Cere where cut off from the force, I completely understand why Obi-wan had so many problems. With the trauma of his past; the forced exile from the Force, and the fears of what may happen in the future, Obi-wan was truly cut off from everything. Obi-wan wasn't strong enough to face Vader yet, and Vader knew it. He was merely toying with is old master. So Obi-wan getting away that first time; merely fueled Vader's anger even more.
    Reconnecting to the Force isn't an easy thing; because Obi-wan had a lot of feelings he needed to deal with Feeling with were not of the Light Side, and therefore; kept him cut off from the Force. That moment under the rocks; when he thinks back on Luke and Leah, he is at peace. Only with your eyes close; can you truly see The Way, and Obi-wan found the way back to the Force. And when Vader claimed; it was He Who Killed Anakin, could Obi-wan find true peace with the past. No longer blinded by the past; no longer worried about the future, Obi-wan was only mindful of the Living Force, could he see his old Master waiting for him. It was at this point; I cried. Plus; not only did Obi-wan say the thing, but Ewan McGregor sounded the most like Sir Alec Guinness, then he ever did in the past.
    Like I said; I ever never a big fan of Episodes 1 -3, but casting Ewan McGregor as Obi-wan Kenobi was the best thing

      Luke didn't fight Vader on Degobah. He fought himself in a force trial. Vader was chillin' on the cloud city.
      Also, Luke decapitated the vision... and the severed head rolled to the ground and the face shield kind of vaporized so Luke could see his own face.
      So, no. Not really a call back to that at all.

      In A New Hope, he definitely has a familiarity with the old hermit, even being able to recognize him when Ben saves him and R2
      They may not have met frequently, but Luke definitely knew him in A New Hope, which still tracks with what we see here and what we’ve seen in the comics as well!

    Everyone's going on about the duel, and it WAS good don't get me wrong, but as pointed out in the video the half-helmet reveal had already been done with Ahsoka in Rebels... so I was like: "Oh, it's this again'. Also after dragging him through flames in episode 03 because he wanted to make him suffer, Darth was ok just to leave him buried and walk away? That didn't seem like a rage-fuelled nightmare of vengeance to me. As did the following conversation with the Emperor...
    DV: "I will hunt him down and destroy him, nothing will stop me"
    Palps: "Stop that"
    DV: "lol, ok u right"
    Also is anyone else annoyed that the Alderaan lot didn't at least offer Obi-wan a cup of tea? Or a snack? He flew all that way just to drop off a toy droid and get right back on his ship??

    I might be part of a small minority but the close up wobbly shaky cam during all the fight scenes drove me crazy. Made the show look like a fan film whenever that happened. Also, another pet peeve was the lightsabers looking kinda cheap. I could tell they were just led sticks with a little cgi gloss versus the sequel trilogy lightsabers(still hate the sequel trilogy)

    How can the writer shit on continuity so much?? Qui-gon can't be a physical ghost because he never complead his training. Aka he was stuck as voice only appart from when he was on Mortis.
    Also he already made contact with Qui Gon in the Ahsoka book (set 1 year after ROTS), and that was don't through deep meditation in the force. Disney thinks Ghosta just pop out of anywhere.

    • @backpacker3421

      Qui Gon LITERALLY invented that force skill... if his conciousness existed at all after death, you don't think he'd continue to perfect the skill of manifesting himself? You realize it's not an actual body that appears, right, just a manifestation - how is that different from a voice?
      But we get it, you think you know more about canon than the writers... who are actually creating canon. LOL

    Terrible writing. When Vader let obi wan escape from the fire, I checked out.
    Why would obi wan not kill Vader (I know that he can't because of the already established story) when he's clearly capable of doing so. Hes fine with Vader continuing to wreak havoc in the galaxy?

      Killing Vader achieves nothing. Palpatine would just replace him like he's replaced so many others before. Hell that ending scene alone tells you that Palps is just one wrong word away from sweeping Vader under the rug.
      Obi-Wan would know this considering he had to fight Palpatine's various apprentices throughout the Prequels. Stick with the enemy you know, the next one might not be so nice.

      @@Pokemonashgreen2 As a HUGE Star Wars fan who was VERY excited for this series I couldn’t be more disappointed with what it delivered. While the actors were well cast, specifically Princess Leia, the writing, editing, directing, and effects made them not matter. At EVERY turn this series will leave you asking yourself questions like... WHY? HOW? HUH? WHEN? WAIT WHAT? EH? SURE... BUT WHY? And SERIOUSLY? That said, best parts of this series are the lightsaber fights. They are by far the best in ANY Star Wars entry to date. They are exciting, new, unique, and thrilling. Beyond that nothing makes sense. The dialogue is LAUGHABLY terrible at EVERY possible turn. The CGI especially that of the space ships in the series were easily the WORST since The Phantom Menace. Almost every character story arc was nonsensical and unfulfilling. Somehow this story was left hanging on a character who survives a lightsaber to gut NOT ONCE BUT TWICE with no understanding of her choices, actions, reasoning, or existence. Strangely this exact same deathblow took out Quigon and yet seemingly lightsaber immunity is now a thing for no reason. MANY of almost EVERY characters choices were oddly illogical and baffling. I’m left with the image of Princess Leia VERY BADLY pretending to comb her ALREADY DONE HAIR confused as to how they allowed this show to be made without Jon Favreau at least overseeing things as an executive producer. I’m certain he would have caught MANY of the issues and is more than likely both very grateful and disappointed that his name wasn’t attached to this series.
