- If you move around the City of Kigali, you will notice a high level of uniformity in buildings, whether residential or mixed used commercial buildings. They all seem to be cut out of the same material.
High-raised roofs, similar design with just a slight difference in colour, same facades and a uniform style define most buildings in the sprawling suburbs of Kigali, almost suggesting that all engineers and architects in Rwanda studied from the same classroom.
This is the perspective that architect Johnson Bigwi set out to change some years ago when he decided to relocate from Kenya, where he studied and practiced, to come and make a difference in his motherland by putting his skills to use.
Bigwi's passion drives his vision. His design is both functional and artistic!
💕Love his philosophy on architecture design and development.
God bless the works of your hands.....this is beautiful!!!
I saw many of his works he is brilliant i am afraid it's expensive to hire him but i hope one day we'll work together 💙💚💛
Beautiful idea for motherland Africa and protection of the environment for all to enjoy nature's view of light.
I love you my people 🤩
One problem with houses near the equator is how to let the daylight in while keeping the heat out. Houses that are built nearer the north/south poles can just have large windows facing the equator to capture both heat and light. In Rwanda, a lot of houses are quite dark inside but I think this is a problem that could be resolved. Is there a way to reflect the light into houses? What about the movement of the sun, can the daylight be captured for most of the daylight hours? Daylight is far more desirable than artificial light and it is free. Maybe curved mirrors, one way glass or periscope technology might work. I also thought about the use of lenses, to disperse light rather than focus it (we don`t want to start a fire). Bigwi, you are great at what you do. If anyone can come up with a solution to this problem, I think you could.
I really appreciate your concern man, and as an architect I am surprised by your knowledge and awareness of all these challenges of building in countries in the tropics like Rwanda. I think it is possible to open up the space to the landscape, trying to let the light, enjoy the views and at the same time keeping the harsh heat out. it comes down to so many parameters, but I am trying to let you know it is possible .
Can’t wait to take a selfie in front of this brilliance
Thank you so much!
You're welcome!
You’re a big inspiration big bro
Thanks my sister!
Keep it up bro! ACB is also coming up next
Looks nice. Are these buildings quake safe?
That philosophy of embracing nature should be the basic to any actectural teachings
