    I love watching these videos. This takes me back, my Grandfather owned a coin op business. The main part of his business was cigarette machines, but he also owned juke boxes, table games and later on video games. I used to ride my bike over to his house and in his garage he had a work shop where he serviced all the machines. He taught me a lot about servicing and maintaining this stuff, so watching you work on them is like a trip down memory lane. People don't realize what a rough business this was. Many of these machines were in bars, and pretty seedy areas so you had to be carful. This is a cash business and he used to have to carry a pistol and a guard dog to watch his van, they tried to rob him a bunch of times. I watch the stuff your fixing and I think, I know how to fix that. It's nice to see someone keeping these machines going. Keep it up!

    The 9.6v line on my Rock-Ola 477 was sending my profit setter nuts, all kinds of random goings on. It read OK on a multimeter, but when I stuck the 'scope on it, you could see a lot of ripple. Some rather tired old electrolytics inside the power supply module turned out to be the problem.

    Ron just come across this video, that is exactly the same Hit Tracker fitted in my Rock-ola 477 Max (1979) After watching this I took mine apart and found the battery fitted was, quite possibly, the orignal when this came over to the UK from the USA. It is a 3 Volt Eternacell with markings on it MT Vernon NY. Although there is no charge in it, it wasn't heavily corroded at all. My intention is to relpace it just as you did with a button battery and hope everything else inside functions correctly. I would never have attempted this without your guidance first.
    Thanks for all your knowledgeable posts, particularily enjoy the pintable ones and ones on rock-ola obviously.
    Stephen

    There was a Bar in Tucson AZ that Berry Sadler own at one time own, in the 1980's someone else owns the bar but they always had a copy of the "Ballad of the Green Berets". I did not get played a lot, but it was more as a tribute to Berry the past owner

      That's very cool, I always liked that song. Did you ever hear the Waffle House deal? The guy that owned or was the President of all the Waffle Houses, his wife wanted to be a singer, so she recorded a bunch of fairly ridiculous waffle house themed songs, and then they had them all pressed up and installed in all the jukeboxes in all the waffle houses :) About 15 years ago I worked for a large operator who got a Waffle House route, and when they put the new digital download boxes in, there was a bunch of discussion about how to get those precious Waffle House themed songs on the box, I can't remember if they pulled it off or not.
      Edit: here's some of the songs : th-cam.com/video/E1wQi73RfG8/w-d-xo.html
      Ironically written by Jerry Buckner, the guy who wrote Pac-Man fever :)

    I believe the National Semi P-MOS MM57xx series, like the MM5799, was designed to run on around 9 volts. The MM5799 micro was popular in electronic games of the period as well as a couple of pocket calculators, that all ran on 9 volt batteries.

    • @LyonsArcade
      @LyonsArcade  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I forgot about 9v batteries, I guess that makes sense why you would need 9volt chips!

  • @ovalteen4404
    @ovalteen4404 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That RAM chip is actually a HM3-6518-9. Harris Inc. stylized the "H" but still made it part of the chip number, for maximum enjoyment. Absolute maximum supply voltage is +7V (+5V recommended) so there must also be a +5V supply, or else there's a voltage regulator on that board somewhere (maybe one or more of those transistors and a zener diode or two). The MM5799 is the microcontroller. No luck finding anything about the MM57163's, but they almost have to be display decoders and drivers, and maybe even input controllers. Many of the chips chosen for this board were originally intended to go into desk calculators.
    Also, CMOS chips such as the CD4xxx series (your CD4069 hex inverter included) have an absolute max voltage of 20V. So they tend to be used where higher voltages are preferred.
    Back then there was a period of electronics with weird voltages. The Intellivision home gaming console used +12V, +5V, and -2.3V on the CPU. The clocks (that's right, plural clock inputs) were +12V. Fortunately, later chips started using internal voltage steppers, so they hide the complexity and only demand one VCC voltage.

    One of KISS' biggest hits "Beth" was originally on the B side of "Detroit Rock City" single. "Beth" became so popular that the record label, Casablanca, re-released the single with "Beth" on the A side and "Detroit Rock City" on the B side. The more you know...

    How do I remove the voltage regulator on Rockola 488? After unscrewing the 2 black screws, it doesn't pop off, does it need to be pried off, or does the whole metal cover need to be removed to access behind the voltage regulator to remove?

    • @LyonsArcade
      @LyonsArcade  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it's soldered to the board on the back, so you have to remove the board and unsolder the voltage regulator.

I've just set up the hit tracker and replaced the 3v battery thanks to you. All that's left for me now is that the selection and credit displays don't light up. • @LyonsArcade
      @LyonsArcade  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It has a diode on the board that all the voltage runs through, I don't know how they charged it or what battery was on there originally.

  • @gertlynge
    @gertlynge 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It is a royalty tracker for the operator. In most locations like bars, and pubs. They have to pay for a ACAP and BMI licensing to allow music to be played. The records that where in jukeboxes are not just the standard run of the mill 45 rpm you could have bought at Woolco back in the day. The 45's came directly from the record companies with a special label making them as promotional or jukebox use only. These records where a bit thicker, and cost way more cause of the licensing agreement with them. Having the data of which record was played how many times allowed for the proper artists to get paid for every time that record was played, and also let the operator know if the record was profitable or a bust. If the record wasn't making any money. The operator could return it and get credited towards another selection.

The only way I can get my unit to play is to manually flip the switches on the big wheel to the right of the records that a sensor spins around. The coin-operated part does not work. Any ideas? I live in Alaska and I have not had any luck finding anyone to work on it.. Thx.

    Hi Ron! Another excellent video, thank you! I changed the battery for one about the same physical size and it works! Also, I have this exact same machine and I notice when you switch yours off and back on it doesn’t make a peep. Mine goes “WHOMP” when I turn it on, regardless of the volume setting. The only way I can think to avoid this is to install a delay relay for the speaker connection. (If I unplug the speakers, then turn on the machine before plugging the speakers back in, no “Whomp”) Have you ever had this issue with any machine? How did you fix it? Thanks!

    the 478 mystic 1978 was the first one that was computer type and they suck lol. I had one say had they were trouble from the get go I had to fix so much on it . There was a man long gone that use to work for rock ola good guy and he was a big help but in the end I junked it. Problem with the 478 was static electricity build up and it would fry the board on the front of the record rack. Also told by him that being there first it had very very strict voltage 12 volt had to be almost spot on to high or low could kill something .
    Amp in it was odd also reversed phase type.

      Worst on carpet or in dry place. Seen static shock screw them up big time. Just walk up to it touch the metal on it could make it go crazy. Like skip plays pick wrong play or worst rest the things. I think this was the death of rockola as a big brand in lots of places. Around here they all were replaced with other brands or older rockola´s. Wurlitzer was big around here and Rowe.
