Inspiration: Alison- B747-8 second officer

- Hello everyone! How do you do! Today, just before we left Anchorage for Hong Kong, I had a quick chat with an inspirational pilot on the Boeing 747-8. Alison is a second officer on the Boeing 747- 8 and Boeing 747-400ERF. She loves aviation and to get into it she began as a member of our Cabin crew in Cathay Pacific. Her target was in fact to become a pilot and the Cabin crew stint was just to familiarise herself to airline operation/time zone changes etc while she prepared for the eventual pilot interview with Cathay Pacific. After 3 years as Cabin crew, she got her interview and was selected for cadet pilot training on Cathay Pacific course CP97 in Adelaide, Australia. She graduated in April last year and on return to Hong Kong, joined the Boeing 747 fleet as Second officer. It’s an inspirational story and should serve as motivation for a number of you out there - you can do it! Stay focused and importantly, prepare, prepare!

This video is a real inspiration for my daughter who is sweating over her choice of degree. The truth is it often does not matter and there are multiple paths to ones chosen goal. Alison demonstrated that. From Cabin Crew to Hotel Management degree to First Officer on a Dash 800. Wow. Well done. Respect.

Well done Alison. You really are a true inspiration to everyone not just aspiring pilots. You have also got one of the best teachers of all in Obet. I couldn't think of a better teacher than someone of Obet's calibre and experience. I love the way you are so level headed with a great attitude. You have taken the time to learn and gain some of the most valuable experience before just jumping in feet first. I wish you the very best in your future career with one of the most highly regarded airlines in the world as Cathay Pacific don't just choose anybody they know who the best are and you and Obet and your other fellow colleagues are an asset to the very airline and many customers around the globe in which you serve.

This is very well deserved knowing especially the things that you do in your every day job whilst also going above and beyond for your new crew members and taking valuable time to coach and encourage the next generation of the men and women who will hopefully be gracing our skies for many years to come. I myself never made the grade to become a pilot on medical grounds Obet but had things of been different it would have been an absolute honour to have had a highly respected and leading Captain training me in the way you train and coach your fellow pilots.

If you are a Hong Kong resident, you can apply for the Cadet pilot scheme like Alison did when they commence recruiting again. If not, the path is that you should find a flight school and initially attain a commercial pilots licence then apply for entry as second officer. All the best

@@pilot_obet7815 I already have a private pilot license! I will now start the commercial pilot course! after that i will fly Embraer Xingu and also king air, which are from my friends! will experience for me on these aircraft

Honest answer- I don’t know what the medical implications are for flying. My best advice is to wherever you live, consult an approved aviation medical examiner( there are many), and get correct information. You can call up your country’s Civil aviation authority bod who should have a list of approved AME’s.
