Final simulator ride for a friend who retires in 3 months on the B747

  • Today I conducted a final and last proficiency check on a good friend that I trained some 18 years ago. Gary first upgraded to Captain on the Boeing 747-200 ‘Classic’ Superjet (with Flight Engineer)18 years ago. I was the Base training captain that did his first takeoff and landings in the Left seat for his command upgrade on the aircraft. In those days we used to use on occasion, Prestwick airport. We would pick up the aircraft at Manchester airport after it arrived from Dubai. Once it was offloaded, I would hop in with my students for touch and goes😊Gary previously flew the Hawk, Jaguars and the Tornado in the Royal Air Force- he is a top pilot. With 15 minutes or so to spare, Gary had a last request- to fly the Kai Tak approach of old Hong Kong airport-. We even flew under the Tsing Ma bridge that leads to the new Hong Kong airport😂- a bit of fun go Gary. Watch the video😀😀✈️✈️✈️So it was appropriate in many ways that having trained him on the B-747 18 years ago, I got to do his final proficiency check before he retires in April😀✈️✈️✈️✈️ We only have the best . All the very best Gary!👍🏾”We are Cathay Pacific “
    (Could you recognise all the alerts and warnings that sounded in the video clips?- list the ones you recognise 😀)

    What a memorable way to end one's career. What a blast! Nothing beats reliving KaiTak as a way to create a lasting flying memory! Very generous and encouraging of you Capt.Obet

    Hi Capt... awesome. Missed the experiences approaching into Kai Tak on jump seat of L1011 and the B742 which used to operate the PEN/HKG and KUL/HKG vv sectors. Which later replaced by A333 and the B777s.
    100% love the stunts you guys did in the vid. Too bad, I have never got the chance to try the sim. Was arranging hard through flight ops but never get a slot.
    Thanks for the vid again.

    Boy do I miss flying. Flew passenger on the Kai Tak approach and was exhilarating. One question, on that sim ride after rolling out on final, how close was that building on the left. Could have sworn the left wing would have hit it.

    I remember flying the hong-kong approach in the 737-800 full-motion sim, I think I was 13 at the time. Boy, that turn at the end really stresses you out, I gotta tell ya! Even with the flight director, I couldn't believe how steep I had to turn. I did land, but let's say it wasn't a very smooth landing, heh heh. I haven't been able to fly in a sim since, but that was the time of my life.

    • @hariranormal5584
      @hariranormal5584 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wait, how did you get to use a sim at 13..?

    • @LunaProtogen
      @LunaProtogen ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hariranormal5584 There's companies that hire out flight sims, I went to one of those. It was very expensive, think ~€100 for an hour. I would say it's worth it in the end, but it definitely feels overpriced

      @@pilot_obet7815 BTW, from your video of Lateral & Vertical Navigation B747-400, I have a question: Why sometimes I see when the speed tape indicates say flaps 10, pilots start retract to flaps 5 in other models (737, 777…)? Is that 747 have different flaps retract procedures like your demonstration in the video? Thanks
