A little masonry sand mixed 75/25 with mortar mix cement will help lock all that together. Do not use play sand or common gravel as they are both rounded and you’ll be fixing this hole again very soon. Thanks for posting. It took me years before someone turned me on to this idea.

He started fine but didn’t finish. Add some limestone or some roughly ground stone otherwise you’ll have an annoying dip.
