I think many people will remember the N-Gage (Classic) as the first smartphone in the world for gamers, and have a successor called the N-Gage QD that offered improved design and performance.

When i was kid in 2004 this device was amazing, coming from playing java basic games to this graphics was amazing and also really expensive.
Indeed. The graphics were on a ps1 level with the One almost looking like an early ps2 game. It was a huge step up compared to java games and some gba games.

@@AstroPizzaI think I can consider that the n gage 2.0 games, the graphics were equivalent compared to the ps1, but still, the symbian phones that came with this service were still less powerful than the ps1, the service failed due to poor execution by Nokia.
Where I lived , there was no GBA , and N gage was the definitive portable gameplay experience I got , and to be honest I don't regret it . The likes of tomb raider , crash nitro kart , red faction and Rayman made my childhood worth it . In all honesty , the only reason I realized the n gage failed was because everyone on the internet said so .
You can actually install VBAG, a gameboy advance emulator to the ngage. It supported symbian s60 from v1 to v3.
I remember installing ngage and vbag to my n73. Good old simpler times.

The cause for fail is the expensive price, low quantity of games compared to Symbian, Java and the strange format. Not is about internet.

MODERN SCREENS IS LIKE PIXILATED ON OLD GAMES, BUT WHEN PLAYING IT ON OLD NOKIA ITS SO AMAZING
so it had the graphics power of the ps1 in a portable form but on a weird aspect ratio cool.
Symbian was miles ahead in almost everything than the then android OS. Nokia would've still been the leading brand in smartphone manufacturing if it wasn't for their arrogance and poor decision making. I still think how Symbian would've looked if it was still around, it was such a powerful OS.

I think I've they'd gone with the side kick design that was popular at the time... The Ngage's story could have ended quite differently. It was way ahead of its time.

Didn't even know this hidden jewel of a console existed. It has some pretty good game,s and great potential for its time!

Splinter cell chaos theory is amazing on ngage. I never experienced the same on pc or any other device. Also it is under rated.
It looked the part, but is a very constrained experience on the N-gage, and then just hard to look at when compared to the DS port that was produced by the same team on the same engine.
Impressive graphics. If the N GAGE was just a gaming handheld i believe it would of been a success...

I was born in 1995 so me as a kid wasnt allowed to get this phone instead i got a foldable motorola as my first phone and some years later a nokia n70. But i would always want this phone back then lol because i was addicted to handhelds. I still got my psp and gameboys and nintendo ds so ty mom for the good times

Better than the GBA,yes, but the ngage was competing against the Nintendo DS and PSP, not the GBA, that is what killed it.
@@pafoneto1275 actually it was more of a direct competitor with the GBA, it was even a part of its marketing campaign. DS and PSP came out about a year later after N-gage hype had already flamed out.

@@pafoneto1275 No, because When the Xbox 360 came out it was established as being the start of a next generation and it wasn't marketed as competing against the PS2 or its own hardware the XBOX which was a previous generation.
Both GBA and Ngage are part of the 6th generation of video games, PSP and DS are 7th gen.

The Ngage also wasn't marketed as competing against the GBA, you just make that out, and one add comparing the Ngage vs the GBA doesn't mean they marketed as that.

I had been very interested in the N-Gage when it was out. By the time I decided I was going to buy one, they were giving them away for free with a 1 year contract. I probably would have bought one too if it weren't for the fact I couldn't buy any of the games. They had physical releases and came on cards, but all the games on their online store were "sold out" and I couldn't find them anywhere else. eBay had them, but I wasn't going to pay scalper prices.
Some of the games look pretty decent, although I did notice more than a handful of games that looked like they were half-assed, I noticed several games had very little if any sound effects, some even didn't have music, frankly, based on the games that looked professional and polished, there wasn't an excuse for it. I am sure some of these titles were just dumped on some randos.
At the time, I think the N-Gage was one of the few handhelds that also had a few titles that offered online multiplayer experiences. One of them was a Gang Wars style game that used a GPS for you to collect territory. I remember wanting to play that one so bad. Elder Scrolls was another one I wanted to play too.
Edit: decided to see about buying one. Yeah, I'm not paying like $70 for the good games, lmfao.
If it had been $100 cheaper and was better designed it probably would have made waves. As it is the GBA released in 2001 for $100, built up a library for two years, the N-gage came out in 2003 for $300, then the NDS came out in 2004 for $150 (and had a touchscreen), then the nail in the coffin was the PSP in 2005; a more powerful handheld for $250 with a lot of 1st and third party support. N-gage died in 2006 with only 58 games released... This thing was downright impressive compared to the GBA.
Yeah, I remember playing NCAA 2004 at a bus stop on my N-gage and some guy sat next to me with a PSP and I believe NBA and I knew it was over.

This video has been sped up, accelerated, or the Ngage is running on an Overclocked model. I've seen an overclocked model back at its launch, and it was running tomb raider on much higher fps than usual.

You missed Elder Scrolls: Shadow key, which is one of just a very few titles worth picking up the NGage for.
That was my first Elder Scrolls game, and it was maybe in the last decade I started playing Skyrim. I went back and played this and its impressive how much of the Elder Scrolls experience they had back then in this mobile game, even if the draw distance was only like 2 feet in front of you.
I just want to buy every device ever made at this point lol.

System Rush, Star wars Force unleashed, elder scrolls, crash nitrokart, One, KoF and bounce are all very interesting games to the system.
It was ahead of it's time. Sadly, Nokia's execution is terrible. The way you can purchase it is a huge trouble. That and the stiff competition not just from Nintendo gba, but also with the arrival of Sony PsP and Ds.
The QD is a good emulation machine. Symbian houses great emulators like the Vbag, Vsun and picodrive. Plus a GBC and nes emulators.
Nokia had the right idea but like I said, they failed on execution. The ngage or ovi store could've been the google Play store in an alternate timeline

I've seen the part 2 of this video that amends some of the choices made in this video, but if your doing a Top Best video you can't just put everything (there were like 65 games that came out on the thing) that came out on the list. Some games like Call of Duty flat out should not be on a top list because that game is almost unplayable in the state it was released.
I appreciate the N-gage for some of the gems it did have, and at a time when the GBA was it's chief rival it pulled off some amazing games like full 3d Tomb Raider and Tony Hawk. But there are some games that are just inexcusably bad (like wwe Aftershock) that should be nowhere near the words Top or Best.

One of the few games that actually used the rumble on the N-gage, It was pretty impressive how much of SSX3 they were able to get into Out of Bounds.
The n gage was more powerful than the gba but not with sonic N (sonic advance port)

@@pafoneto1275 Yeah, but back then phone technology wasn't pacing with pc's and video game consoles the way they are now. We got Iphones that can run same engine ports of Resident evil village and Assassins creed as ps4s. The average phone wasn't able to do ports at the same level as a GBA even 3 years after its release.
