Boat Plumbing - Toilet Valve Seacock Stuck (Part 1)

  • In this episode I'm working on my 1965 Cheoy Lee sailboat. One of the first projects involves working in the boat's head, repairing a seized seacock value. Working in the head is no bueno. In fact, it's disgusting. Nonetheless, it's a part of boat ownership, so join me in this episode, where I get my hands dirty (real dirty). #Sailing

I’m only 8mins into the video but as a farmer, when I have to go through that much trouble to repair a ball valve I just replace it and everything else that comes off! Even though it’s shitty!

To solve ALL toilet and associated issues,,,hoses and SMELL,which you will ALWAYS have,go with a composting toilet. We went with the Airhead and love it,would never go back.

Great video and thanks for putting this together. It definitely helped me strategize what I needed to do; I did manage to get the seacock ball unseized by adding a heavy mix of dishwashing liquid and water. I let it sit for a few days and I was able to get the valve working again, however, I had to remove the hose to get the solution in there(make sure you have rags all around as black water is going to spill everywhere). Also, vacuumed out the excess black water in the seacock valve; then add the soapy water. Alternatively, I tried pouring vinegar/baking soda solution(this is not good to do as it eats away at the brass). I tried spraying blaster oil and let it sit for a few days; nothing. I tried using a heat gun to it as well; nothing. The best solution was the soapy water; totally freed up the valve!

the life of an old boat owner. I have a bad seacock on my sink drain, going to haul it out this fall and replace and examine all other seacocks. Your going to need to haul her out to fix that unless you want to chance pulling the seacock from your thru hole in the water (I wouldn't try it but could make for a great video.....Josh sinks boat trying to replace seacock). Best of luck to you bud. You'll get her fixed!

A chemical respirator does and EXCELLENT job of eliminating septic smells. You can pick one up at a hardware store for < $40, then you can keep it around for when you are painting/epoxying in a confined space or when fumes are strong (the actual intended use). Add some elbow-length rubber gloves and the job becomes almost tolerable.... almost.

Unscrew the seacock fitting from the thru hull fitting and replace. BTW the price of sanitation hose is based on what value proposition ???. The price is based on how long it takes for the hose to smell like poop. The longer duration to smell like poop the higher the price.

Did you have a lock on the handle you have to slide back to unlock before opening and closing? It's a small metal slider at the joint.

Josh you are so close to fixing it...you have a bung stopping water entering the yacht, now spin off the ball valve from the thru hull and replace it with a new one..I think that will work in your situation of being in the water..cheers

Mine was 1 1/2 inch. They sell at Home Depot for $4. But you’ll need to measure your thru-hull fitting to be sure because you could have a different sized hole. Some are 1” some 1.5” etc. Good luck. 👍

I would have used some muriatic acid rather than the vinegar is, it is stronger in with dissolve, lime/calcium deposits, faster. Then vacuum it out. Then put some KRIOL or PV blaster and let it soak.

Josh, it looks like that is an Apollo brand valve? If you look closely that type of ball valve can be taken apart and repaired. Of course not an easy job with your luck, The danger is and I waited for the whole thing to come flying off with the boat flooding!! The offer for drinks at the VFW and discussing your shitty job still stands.

cannot even claim Hazard pay. You just got to do a tee shirt on this one......something about Shit Happened.
Stainless ball in valve attached to handle mechanism has fused to the bronze. This happens a lot as the valves age especially if they sit in one position for a long time. Recommend you change out all the valves and through hulls...look at the Marelon ones from Forespar...good carbon fiber based product.

I know it's "Monday morning quarterbacking" on my part, ..... but .... in a significant valve stuck condition, on a "loaded" pipe and valve boat's system, the optimum decision from the start would be to replace the entire path of ball valve and section of hose. Plumbing was never one of my pleasant jobs.

The old broken handle trick , Gets ya all the time The problem was the seacock wasn't opening completely hence the perfect remedy for blockages , trust me been there & seen it many times (Charter yacht & delivery skipper) .Looked like the lower hose was stopping it ? I normally take the end off the top of the hose & put a water hose in with rags to seal the top & 9 out of 10 times it blows what's stuck out , First a long screw driver to try & clear the blockage first , If your replacing the Seacock go with a nylon one , Iv had 2 year old bronze ones let go . Cruising = Fixing heads in tropical places . fair winds .

Broken two or three (2") ball valve shafts on stuck valves. Best to operate them a couple times a year to avoid the siezing. That said, I've also changed out stuck (closed) 2" valves without a bung plug. Lots of water comes into the boat quickly, but if you're prepared and leave the new valve open (until its threaded on) it's really not that big of a deal. The real headache is to figure out the correct square o-ring for BSPP fittings (McMasters Carr, go the larger size based on the female valve body so it is a tight fitting and wont compress back into the thru-hull). This is required to get a proper face seal. If course, there's no telling what angle the handle will end up at.
