- I personally like the story about struggle of ideals of Archer/Shirou/Emiya in the Fate Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Work, besides the awesome and breathtaking anime graphics. So, I have decided to make a video to depict such amazing story and characters. Feel free to switch to 720p if you want to watch in HD! Enjoy! XD

"Make sure to put on your own oxigen mask before helping others with theirs." Pretty fitting for Counter Guardian EMIYA I think. He spend both his life and afterlife saving others, but no one ever saved him.
I love almost everything about Shirou's character, The Twist that he's Archer adds even more to it and unlimited blade Works tackles both of their views and ideals beautifully well

Shirou is such a compelling character to me. His way of thinking, rise, downfall and eventual rise again makes him very interesting. I know it's a trope of "the hero never gives up" but I don't see it as a trope because Shirou doesn't give up because the plot demand it. He fights on out of sheer stubbornness and will. It's very inspiring to witness
What I like about Shirou is that he’s essentially a deconstruction on the “Hero” or “Hero never gives up” trope. He’s that shounen protagonist who refuses to kill anyone and always tries to find some ideal ending where everyone survives but in a world with no demon king, horde of monsters, divine beasts, or army of savages to fight. Only other people. And when lives need to be saved in a world like that, it’s very possible that people will need to die so others can live.
It being a trope isn't a bad thing.
For me it's The fact that they don't treat his aggressive selflessness and lack of self worth as a good thing. They acknowledge that wanting to be "a hero that saves eceryone" is a road that leads to sorrow because it's impossible. And his unwillingness to view himself as a person whose life has value leads to his death and rebirth as a counter guardian. It's a fascinating concept of a person masking their low self worth in selfless heroism. It's so fucking good I could literally talk about it for hours.

@@lorddoomer7271 I do too and also if you haven't actually read the VN, you should. His reasoning for rejecting Archer was basically not even shown at all I'm the Anime in the Archer fight. I recommend you watch "EMIYA Paradox" and "Shirou vs Archer VN" both are on TH-cam.

4 years later. Rewatching the series, had a realization, “Body of swords”… a sword is a tool used by others.

Food for thought: the actor for shirou in the English dub in ubw is the same one for kirito in sao, same as the voice actors for the abridged versions of both shows
And...both are swordsmen he's also melinda's the guy definitely has a type
I will not shocked if alaya plays it's part on emiya shirou survival on that fuyuki fire after all EMIYA is one of the best counter guardian that will of humanity have ever aquired

Nah I’d rather it be something else. Alaya doesn’t really care who it chooses to be a CG even if Emiya Shirou never existed Kiritsugu would’ve been a candidate or some other person during that time.

@@starplate7052 Counter Guardian Kiritsugu only exists because in the timeline he comes from he is never hired by the Einzberns and therefore never meets Irisviel or participates in the Holy Grail War. This meant that he remained unwaveringly dedicated to his ideals as a Hero of Justice even beyond the grave. In the main timeline, Kiritsugu doesn't become a Counter Guardian because he abandoned his ideals due to his experiences in the war. He tried to prevent Shirou from following in his footsteps but fails so Shirou becomes EMIYA in almost every route.

Shirou Dream is not a mistake

I remember I wanted to be a hero when I was little, but then reality faced me.
Kronomon Same here but even so, I was able to go through a lot of hardships because of that childish dreams. So if anything, I’m gonna hold on to it, until the end. This is the only path for sure.

In any event if your going to try and be a hero or at least do some good in the world, you should know first that know one will really thank you or appreciate you for all that you've done for them...theres a lot more downs then there are ups in this line of work its a difficult road to go down for sure.......for me even if know one thanks me or shows some level of appreciation it doesn't really matter its the knowing that iv done some good in the world....i will say so far its been a difficult road iv walked apon but its a road i feel conpelled to keep walking it,so to any one thats wanting to do some form of good or try to be a hero..i will say (thats hell your walking in to)

People will absolutely appreciate what you've done for them, and it's possible that even others will show their gratitude aside from the ones whose situation you aided, but the issue is that gratitude eventually fades, and the good accomplished ultimately means very little in the grand scheme of things. But I agree on the grounds that just doing good by others is worth it, and those selfless acts and small kindnesses could have far reaching consequences despite the odds. Even though one's aware of how meaningless or risky it could be, striving to do right is a noble thing
It's still possible it's not a dream
I love the character of Shirou. And Archer. Their tale in UBW was incredibly well written. And this video is entirely made of awesome. I was much like Shirou in my younger days. I wanted to not only be a hero, but I wanted an outcome where everyone was happy and shared that happiness with others. As I grew in years, I came to realize that being a hero to one person, or group of people, meant being a villain to another. And sometimes, the people who at first seem like victims are deserving of the treatment they recieve at the hands of others. And then there's human nature. Alas. But nevertheless, this video is incredible. Full of feeling and set to a great piece of music. Watching it kind of rekindled that old childish desire to want to be a good guy and do what I can to help others. Thanks for a great piece of work that actually managed to inspire feelings that I haven't felt in ages and frankly, thought had been killed completely by the harsh realities of life and human interaction. 😊
Well done. I love Unlimited Blade Works because it centers itself around the ideals that everyone is fighting for. The fight scenes are amazing but more than that, there's substance to each fight.

The fight between shirou and archer could be seen as a war that each of us fight inside himself. The one who is cynic and hollow against the one who belive in his dreams. When you are disillusioned, because you disappointed by something you want to destroy the you that has believed in that idea. The you that believe in that idea instead want desperately to demonstrate that he's right anyway. That there's always something more
To quote Fullmetal-Alchemist, "you will find the truth within the truth"
"Don't lose it again, it doesn't suit anyone but you" At that moment I thought for the first time that he was Shirou. The stutter itself almost solidified it in my brain. Even after death, long after he had been exploited as a guardian, executed for starting a war he in fact ended and having killed so many he actually stopped caring, he still, deep down in his heart, he loved Rin a lot. I don't strive to be a man like him but when it comes to his love for Rin, it's truly admirable and that's the kind of love I want to show my girlfriend (once I hopefully get one lol😅). That obviously doesn't mean Shirou/Archer is not an admirable person, it's just that I don't want to duplicate his ideals, only his love for his girl to a degree

Shirou my boi u got so much character development, something that makes human to strive for until it breaks them wherever they know it or not, if u think about it reality really hits hard when you find out the true nature of the system, there’s many things that can brought to be disgust but also there are beautiful things in this world that are worth being alive for.
So many things I can say about my favorite anime characters of all time, but I'll focus on just one aspect today: doing what you believe to be right. At the end of the day, all we can do is what we believe to be right. Guess what? We might be wrong with some of our actions. Maybe we do something that we thought would make everything perfect, but when we mess up, it makes us seem like a fraud, or a hypocrite. So we can either let the mistakes we made turn us into the hypocrite we looked like, OR, we can look at those mistakes, realize how to not make them again, and then use this knowledge to allow us to get back onto a path with our ideals. It is not easy, and we will fail countless times. Even if it is a life dripping with hypocrisy, even if we fail to reach our ideals 1000 times, all that matters is what we do the 1001st time. If we do that, then we can truly say our dreams are not a mistake. That, is how we can be like Shirou Emiya

it's like this, there is this guy with low iq, no matter how much he tries, he fails the exam, but the finds the act of acing the exam beautiful, just imaging it fill him with happiness, then his future self comes and says, u ain't acing the exam no matter how hard u try, (in the context of a normal low iq guy, it may not be true, since if u work hard anyone can ace exams, while in the context of shirou it is true that he can't ace the exam of saving everybody),
but what the guy here says to his future self is, that he will still try acing the exams, even if he ultimately fails, since his dream of acing the exam is beautiful and it is just that reality is hard, but it is worth giving a try, and his future self re-learns from his past self that the dream of acing exam is not wrong, so he isn't wrong, it is just that reality is hard.

Probably his family. He doesn’t remember anything before Kiritsugu so it’s probably his forgotten family.
According to a short scene in the FSN manga, Shirou had a Father who he inherited most of his looks from, a mother who is responsible for his orange hair and no siblings.
@@elportero8710 He does remember his family, he makes several references to them in the VN, but he usually drop the thoughts as soon as he notices he is doing it because he dislike remembering.
Actually both of the answers above are wrong he was trying to save himself. Fate route shirou specifies his guilt as he was selfishly trying to save his own life and he saw people around him begging him to save them but he closed his ears and continued walking off

Honestly emiya is one of the sadest characters... and he shows so well why the world is justa garbage ass f place to live in... and the persons on it are nothing better... yet young emiya is right and everybody should think like that... i can relate to both of their pain to SOME degre... ofc I wasn’t killed but sure as hell have been backstabbed more times than i start to even remember

I would say conviction. Shirou change cuz of rin. He learn tk value his life more and wont try to stop every tears but save people that he can save by helping them. Shirou wont save a ideal but people. Its what archer did not do. So he realize this shirou emiya would surely be able to be " the hero of justice this world need"
Imo, passion. Dreaming about saving everyone and then failing when you try(while sacrificing everything) is miserable. Especially for Shirou, who feels guilty for living and feels that he has to make up for it.
But what if Shirou didn't care about the result? What if he did it just because he thinks the dream is beautiful and not because of guilt? What if Shirou put journey over result?
Then it wouldn't be a miserable dream after all. Or at least he'd be able to make peace with it.
This is my interpretation but I think it makes sense.
Also, I think I've seen you before in a Think Shirou video.
He realised he was looking at everything wrong. He was so focused on the killing and the murder that he was forced to do and that you can never save everyone, that he forgot what made the ideal worth it in the first place. He lost sight of the inherent beauty of trying to save everyone. That’s what Shirou realises, and in turn what makes archer not want to kill him.
He realises that just because you can’t save everyone doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try.

Well emiya is one of the strongest type of archer class because he can get a close combat. Someone like archer of black, chiron, for example, has several handicap fighting one to one. Though, Emiya is a strange servant: he doesn't came from age of gods and i doesn't master any weapon. Ha hasn't instinct so, if he couldn't predict his enemy, he can't fight well. Anyway I think that Rin and Emiya are one of strongest couple

Counter Guardian Emiya has a sword-arrow named Hruntr that acts as a guided magical missile when fired from his Bow.
@@mide2476 That's definitely not Hrunting, it looks like a common arrow and Hrunting looks like a steel abomination. There is also a worrying lack of explosion for it to be Hrunting.
It's either a random Mystic Code or his ability to telekinetically move swords also works with arrows.

This clears up somewhat what Shirou's goal is (kind of) but just seems.. Really cliche but with the reality twist.
I had hoped we got more backstory on Archer as to why he was betrayed and how he died.
I always found Shirou really predictable and boring in Stay Night since was basically a self insert in the vn.

Character Development: Nonexistent. Shirou is a completely one dimensional character
All you really need to know about him is that he wants to be a hero and protect others. That's basically his entire character. He comes from the series Fate Stay Night, the sequel to Fate Zero and boy was Fate Stay Night a disappointment.
Inherently there is nothing wrong with having your character being a hero but that is only if it is done right.
Power Ups: Can beat any enemy through the power of love and friendship. In the author's own words,

The Archer class Servant of the Fourth Holy Grail War. Though he was summoned by Tohsaka Tokiomi, he ended up deserting his master and re-contracting with Kotomine Kirei. He is the strongest character in both Fate/stay night and Fate/Zero.
In the boy-meets-girl story of the original Fate/stay night he was forced to yield to the universal law of "love conquers all", but in Fate/Zero he's free to show off his overwhelming, cheat-like strength without restraint.
No seriously. There is no justification for the power of bullshit this guy gets. He beats freaking Gilgamesh through the power of bullshit.
Let take these three much better characters for instance.
Kiritsugu Emiya
Character Development:
"I was reckless when I was young. I educated myself by cursing the heartlessness of the world. The world was cruel - so I made myself more heartless and used that as a weapon, trying to follow through on my ideals." - Kiritsugu Emiya
One of my favorite character. He is man who is jaded by his experiences. He originally wanted to be hero, a trait passed onto his son Shirou. But he was soon learned how horrible reality was as he saw his home, family and crush destroyed. He transforms from a happy go lucky child to burnt cinnamon bun who is a deadly assassin.
"They call certain methods of fighting good and others evil, acting as if there were some nobility to the battlefield. Such illusions, perpetrated by heroes throughout history, have led countless young men to their bloody deaths, all for the sake of this valor and glory." - Kiritsugu Emiya
He is willing to use any underhanded means to win. However he does still show signs of humanity. For example several times over he shows he is willing to give up the war and take Irisviel back home to their daughter so he doesn't risk losing his family. This is someone who is constantly scared and terrified behind a mask of calmness to hide his fears.
"Our Heroic Spirit here thinks the battlefield is something better than hell. What a joke. It's hell itself. There's no hope on the battlefield. It has nothing but unspeakable despair. Just a crime we call victory, paid for by the pain of the defeated. Yet humanity has never recognised this truth. And the reason for that is, in every era a dazzling hero has blinded people with their legends and prevented them from seeing the evil of bloodshed. The true nature of humanity has not advanced a step beyond the stone age."
He has gone through a life of misery and despair. The same dark experience that made him who he was today. He is an incredible sympathetic character. He has seen the cruel reality of life and that has destroyed his innocent view of the world. He has become cynical and close minded in his views.
That's what so great about Fate Zero. More than anything, It was a battle between ideals and different goals. You saw all these different character motivations and life stories that changed these amazing characters into who they are today. The philosophical debates between their points of view were just amazing and awe inspiring.
Fate Stay Night can be summed up as the boy who got his own harem and beat the bad guy. That's it. That's literally the entire story. You are literally deluding yourself if you think there is anything deep about Fate Stay Night. I've watched it multiple times both anime and visual novel. It is an overglorified cheap harem anime.
Kirito
Character Development:
After escaping Sword Art Online for the first time. Kirito is permanently scarred for life. This shows even in later series. He is constantly having nightmares about the ordeal, has survivor's guilt after seeing all the people who died and even gives up duel wielding except in emergencies.
Shirou on other hand comes out of Holy Grail completely unscathed, same for Rin and the others. After what is described as survival of the fittest. His view on the world is completely the same, his personality is exactly the same, pretty much no one dies, no sacrifices were made, no development was made. Shirou remains the same one dimensional character he was before.
Izuku Midoriya
Character Development:
Deku similar to Shirou, is someone who wanted to be a hero his entire life. A big difference however is how their mentor/older versions impacts their lives.
To start off the Archer & Shirou relationship. Pointless. Archer is a servant in Fate Stay Night. But the whole future Shirou Emiya thing was completely pointless. Shirou does not change one bit from this and still defeats Archer anyway. Archer could have been literally anyone and the story would not have changed one single bit. Heck just make Archer a normal hero who comes from Russia with the power of tracing and the story would not have changed at all.
Now then Deku & All Might. Deku idolises All might. Practically worships the ground he walks. Similar to Shirou. Deku is self destructive and reckless. His powers literally destroy his body from the inside out. But unlike Shirou, the biggest difference between them. Deku actually has *Character Development*.
Obviously Deku can't just keep up his self-sacrificial tendencies. So after seeing how much this affects his mother and the people he cares about. He learns how selfish and reckless he was being. Only thinking of himself and his own goals. He learns to be less reckless and take better care of himself. He adapts his fighting style so there is less pressure on his arms and begins to focus on a more leg-based fighting style with help from Tenya Iida.
UBW vs Gate of Babylon
Gilgamesh stomps. Gilgamesh even when not serious was trolling Saber by casually defending against her attacks in Fate Stay Night. He also restricted Berserker easily with Enkidu. Several Fate Fans in forums have also called Shirou & Sieg mary sues.
Because Shirou himself admits that any servant could take on UBW and win. But he apparently thinks he can beat Gilgamesh because sword spam = sword spam. If that was true most anime characters would easily beat Gilgamesh.
But as Fate fans love to bring up Gilgamesh has several ships, armour , shields, haxed weapons that could easily defeat his opponents e.g. moving at the speed of light or thought. You can't have it both ways.
Heaven's Feel
Shirou sacrifices nothing. He doesn't give up his dream. Best case for Shirou, He simply chooses not to take the easy way out. That's it. He doesn't deserve an award just for that. At the end of the day, its still the same as any other route, He fights Kirei, or the other repetitive bad guy, saves the day and goes back to live with his family and friends.
Illya dies, that's not exactly new after saving Shirou through a Deus ex machina. He is still fighting Angra Mainyu to save the world, he is still fighting Sakura to save the world. Besides Shirou acting Emo over nothing. Nothing changes.

UBW, Fight Kuzuki, Saber gets kidnapped, Archer turns traitor, Gilgamesh kills Illya, Shirou beats Archer and this whole scene was pointless. Since Shirou doesn't change or do anything about his flaws, Shirou beats Gilgamesh through power of friendship, day is saved again.
It's clear Fate fans are toxic manchildren who throw a tantrum at anyone who disagrees with them yet the toxic Fate fans have the nerve to bash other series and insult other fandoms.
At least it’s better than deku who got his power instead of earning the name of a hero and the overhaul fight getting that stupid 100 percent more like eri the plot armour and do you know any fate fans who tried attacking the author I haven’t but mha sure did so who’s really the toxic fandom
@@amvasmvwar911 I honestly don't see where you're coming from. Deku did work for the power, he does grow more mature, and the fight does make sense. Eri was rewinding his body, and Deku using his full power kept it from being completely rewound.
I'm sorry, I don't see how Shirou is a Gary Stu. Yes, he doesn't get a lot of development, but if a character is supposed to represent an ideal that's not nessecary. And it's not like his ideals aren't constantly questioned and tested by Keri and Archer. And it's not like his power doesn't grow other time, and he does anything without being taught. And while Kirito may not be as bad as most.critics think, he still has some problems as a character. He's selfless in the first episode, taking the hate so they'll leave the beta testers alone. But then he selfishly hides his power from his guild when it causes higher lever monsters to spawn and gets them killed. He also could have gotten everyone out when he had access to the source code, but chose to save Yui instead.

This makes me SOOOO happy I don't watch dubs. Some of the quotes in this flat out contradict the VN and original Japanese... The voice actors didn't even try to match the emotion of the original, they just made up their own... And hearing Archer pronounce Tohsaka made me wince.
This is decent, but... it's NOT an AMV. An AMV is an Anime Music Video. It uses clips from the anime to a music piece.
I'd call this a fan-promo, and a rather good one at that.
Thanks for your input. I believe every anime fan has their own opinions and preference when it comes to either to watch sub, dub or both version. The most important thing is that no matter what your preference is (either sub or dub) based on your opinion, please remember that we should respect one another's opinion for everybody is entitled to have their own preference in this matter. I personally do not want to discuss this further as this will become endless debate and it will get both parties (sub and dub fans) to get unhappy in the end.
See this is the problem you know Japanese to English translations aren't always accurate right? And besides it's not just them using the exact same phrases from the vn they have to lip sync with the original japanese which is very difficult even to this day no english dub gets every translation 100% correct
