Owon SDS1102 100Mhz 2-channel Digital Oscilloscope

  • The Owon SDS1102 is a no-nonsense 100Mhz 2 channel oscilloscope for the benchtop. Here we go through the opening and initial testing of the scope. Quite impressed.
    See also SDS1022 (20Mhz version)
    The video works alongside the blog at. tech.scargill....
    www.owon.com/
    In addition to the information in the video I now know that the USB connector on the front is for storing snapshots.. and on the right hand side is a USB connector for connecting to the PC. Sadly, the version 1.x software that came with the scope does not seem to want to talk to Windows 10 64 bit USB. I'm awaiting a link for the 2.0 software and will report back in the blog. I'll also have more up to date information as I'm waiting for a precision reference and a new signal generator.
    At the slowest end of scanning the scope is able to handle 1000 seconds per division - something checked and verified overnight as I set my Feeltech signal generator to 100 times faster than it's slowest speed!!!
    Update July 2020: Comments welcome from readers who own one of these SDS1102 scopes - does it work well for you? In 2019, Elektor magazone reviewed this scope and seemed to verify the 1 Gsamples/s (500 Msamples/s when using two channels) and an input bandwidth of around 100 MHz.
    Other reviews are a confusing mix of everything from likes to utter hatred so I'm happy to hear back from people who have actually spent time with this model as against those with a general dislike for inexpensive Chinese scopes. I can't update my own thoughts as I no longer have the scope, not for any negative reasons, but I have several other models and so this one ended up in the hands of a colleague. I only have so much room in my office/workshop.
    Refer back to the blog for more info.

    I am very satisfied with my WON SDS1022, user friendly, technically do the testing I need, and affordable.

    Looks like they have a 4 channel version as well these days, which is the SDS1104 and it's available for around 300€ which is pretty crazy considering the other cheapest 4ch scopes are 400€ or so. This review is really helpful even if it isn't the same model, at least tells me that Owon isn't completely trying to BS people although I'm sure there's going to be some compromises to make it so cheap
    Going to have to sleep on it a few days before I make a decision, there's so many different options these days and it doesn't help that as a beginner I honestly don't know what kind of performance I would need from a scope but I suspect it's going to be far less than whatever these cheap scopes are capable of

    I purchased one of these OWON SDS1102 oscilloscopes a while ago to test CPUs and memory in retro computers. There's a lot of videos showing what you should or shouldn't be getting but there's not many, if any that explain how to setup the scope for testing memory and CPUs like Z80s and 6502s. Not having a background in electronics, I want to make sure I don't blow up the oscilloscope or the parts I'm testing. Is anyone able to give a quick rundown on how to setup the OWON SDS1102 for testing memory chips in those old 8 bit computers?

      Hey, how are you? I'm not a pro but there are some basic things you should definitely know before even turning it on! Never put your probe or gnd on the hot side of the PCB, otherwise... "boom". Considering the scope shares the mains ground with the device you are testing. Make sure you are measuring DC signals on the cold side of the board. Just my 2 cents, hope you didn't blow it up yet xD

    Nice little scope. I also have a low end hantek scope from China and I mostly use it not for seeing fast signals but often to monitor something over seconds or minutes. Nice little data logger for a super cap or a battery.

    • @PeterScargill
      @PeterScargill  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah, good - I'm glad you wrote in Michael - because I was GOING to get a Hantek at some point. What is it like for responsiveness. One of the things I like about the OWON is, for example when you put your finger (or a signal) on the lead it responds immediately, just like an old-fashioned tube scope. Is the Hantek responsive like that? Which model do you have?

      Here in Ukraine we sell the OWON scopes in hundreds... Very nice scopes. It may be 1 failure (mainly power supply) of 200 scopes. www.gtest.com.ua We easily replace defective power supplies ourselves. So, actually no failures....

    I bought one for use with my curve tracer only.
    Works perfect but heat a lot.
    I make a hole in the back and install a 3 inch fan.
    In the long run this heat can damage something.

    most drawback of this device is very SMALL memory, just 10k for sampling purposes. It`s not a problem for "seeing waveform" but very small for maths.

    Does it have any Serial Bus Decoding Features in the PC SW? Like CAN, UART, I2C etc? I think a 2 CH Picoscope is better because of the SW even without the Screen?

    Hi Pete, and thanks so much for taking the time to make this video! I am thinking of buying this oscilliscope and was wondering when you have some time if you could give us any updates as to how it has been performing for you. I read somewhere that someone with a different Owen model oscilloscope was having problems with it freezing up 2 to 3 times per hour and several people said the software it comes with is very hard to install and most of them gave up trying to install it. Also have there been any firmware updates since you have had it, or have you noticed any bugs? Thanks so much!

      Hi there
      A colleague of mine is using this on a daily basis and I think he's quite happy with it. We started moving house in January just as I was in hospital... we are still moving, so I've no access yet to some of my tech kit.

    • @billguitarvin
      @billguitarvin 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the quick reply. So sorry to hear you were in the hospital. Is everything OK now? Moving is stressful enough so must have been extra stressful wiith a hospital visit. Hope things are better now, hope you are able to unpack your electronic gear soon and take care.

    • @PeterScargill

      2 months in hospital to be precise... stroke in December. Just had my first proper drive today with an instructor, didn't do too badly. Spending half my days exercising, the rest at the computer working on restoring my keyboard skills.. and yes some of my kit is still in storage, we hope to complete the house move near end of May after a break in Spain.

      So sorry to hear about your stroke. 2 months is a long time to have to be in a hospital. Are you feeling better? Any difficulty with speech or motion? Good that you are exercising and working on getting your typing skills back. Best of luck with all that and take care.
