Definition of a Pickup Truck: "A pickup truck is a light duty truck having an enclosed cab and an open cargo area with low sides and tailgate." I'm pretty sure the Ridgeline meets those requirements in the definition. Plus, it was built to be more useful than any other "real truck" on the market. Call it what you want but I honestly think it is underrated and underestimated by many. Honda builds really practical vechicles. Anyway, is this Truck worthy enough to be tested on the ike by TFL. It would be really cool to see how it does.
Now I love these videos and they are very helpful and interesting to watch, they only help the people that buy these trucks brand new (and viewers in the states). You guys should do some segments on used trucks, like which hold their value the best, which trucks are least likely to break down, the best trucks of a certain year that are a couple years back (2011- 2014), maybe you guys could go and get some used trucks and put them head to head to determine which is a better purchase. Either way I love the content you guys put out and you should keep uploading videos.
I don't understand the hype over the Desert Runner. Isn't the Toyota Tacoma Prerunner essentially the same thing? If I remember correctly, Nissan came out with the Desert Runner specifically to compete with the Prerunner for buyers that wanted the 4wd look without 4wd.
In its present form I can't consider the Ridgeline a real truck. I guess its trying to be the modern El Camino. Now if they would put it on a Truck frame and make it rear wheel drive. Having said all of that I do think they will find a nich. Mostly in the citys or some such.I just don't think I want one though.
My uncle has a manual 2008 ram 2500 with the cummins.. he loves it, no worry about wearing out a auto and it gives him more control of the truck while hauling
I test drove a manual 2016 Cummins Ram Big Horn prior to purchasing my automatic Laramie Cummins. I enjoyed being able to row my own gears again, but the gears were so short and the throws so long that I knew it'd be quite cumbersome as a DD. Considering my last manual vehicles were a Focus ST and Subaru STI, it was total apples and oranges. I am happy they still make them, but the prospective buyers are quite limited, to say the least. The difference in torque rating between the auto and manual versions was too much to ignore as well. The auto just made much more practical sense.
well here on the Appalachian Mt that is all you see when getting a Cummins is Manuals LOL. But there are also Truck and tractor pulls every weekend somewhere close by. Dodge HD have always been this way.
Not exactly related to the video, but have you guys done any review of the GMC/Chevy 1500s with the 4.3L V6? I've tried searching the video archive, but nothing obvious turned up. Wondering what your opinions and thoughts have been on it, or what you've heard?
My dad worked for So. Ca. Gas Co. in L.A. and a few years ago they converted to natural gas and discontinued even they found it hard to work with. Been years they may be doing it again.
What you guys failed to mention is that the ram with the diesel, no matter what trim or year, with the manual transmission, has a detuned cummins. If I am not mistaken, it only makes something like 600lb ft of torque.
The Nissan Frontier Desert Runner is not the only truck of its kind. The Toyota Tacoma TRD Off Road can be had in 2wd as well and in my opinion a way better option with bilstiens, a locking rear diff, and skid plates, and better interior amenities.
Hope Y'All can do a review with the 4x4 van soon. It would be great to do a snowy drive if you can. Something like the loveland pass drive Y'All done a few years ago with the Lexus. Or like what Mr.Truck and Kelsy done with the Tacoma.Basically whatever you can do to show what it can do that would be hard for a 2 wheel drive van.A review without the company babysitter.
Hey TFLT, great vid. Quick question. What is the tow rating for the RAM 2500 with the manual transmission? I can't seem to find any specs on the RAM website, and figured you guys would probably know.
It’s funny how people get all exited about Cummins 3500/4500s once you get into medium duty/heavy duty freight liners and Mack’s,those trucks are like toys
Why do people seem to hate the Ridgeline so much. No it is not for towing a massive trailer or for hard core off roading. The Ridgeline gets good MPG, is comfortable, and for someone that that is going to the home center to get some plants or hauling a dirt bike or two it seems like a good choice for them. Yes it is an SUV with a bed but why is that a bad thing?
Because that defeats the purpose of the "truck". A truck is supposed to be something that you can haul things with AND go off-road with if you want. Meaning 4WD not AWD. The Ridgeline is not a truck, and the market for it is VERY small. I see Honda discontinuing it again.
I have a feeling my Chevy 2500hd is more comfortable because of its size and u cantankerous it offroad and u can haul a lot and fit people that are over 200lbs unlike the ridgeline u put 5 people that weigh over 200 hundred it will exceed its towing limit
+Matt ra exactly. People looking for everything this guy listed above are going to look at other midsize trucks, because they have the same amenities, plus amenities that the Ridgeline is missing. Honda fucked up on this one, and I see them losing a lot of money.
You can haul things with the Ridgeline and you can tow things. Sorry but for your average family truck owner the Ridgeline will do all that you need. My sister and brother in law own not one but two trucks. The Ridgeline will do all that they use their trucks for. How many trucks only have two wheel drive and how many never haul anything more than some plants and mulch. The hate for the ridgeline is all about image and not really about usefulness.
the sprinter is the only 4wd van from the manufacturer in the US ? you don't get the vw transporter 4Motion ? It's smaller than the sprinter of course, but it's a good one for a small RV.
I have driven one of those manual desiel trucks... They are popular with the ranchers in Idaho and Wyoming. Dodge had a bad reputation with their automatic truck transmissions for a decade or so.
4WD= Low range transfer case AWD= No low range Van= Body on frame design with 3/4 and 1 ton options Minivan= Unibody vehicle based off a light duty car chassis
I would love to have a Ram 2500 with the 4WD and Cummins I-6 6-speed manual combo but that engine is so expensive, I really want to learn how to drive a manual.
That Mercedes builds the only 4 wheel drive van is not entirely true. Volkswagen builds the transporter now for decades as 4x4 syncro (T3, T4 and T5) also the Crafter (similar to Sprinter) is available as 4 wheel drive too (4motion), but I don't know if they are sold in the US because I am from Germany.
I favor manual transmissions which the majority of my vehicles have. But, my favorite of the 5 you listed is the new Honda Ridgline! I wish some company would stop the BS and build and release an all electric truck with 4x4 option.
Here in Brazil . And cheaper to install a feed system with the cylinder in the car that pay the gasoline so expensive. And a good economy at the end of the quotas. But there is gasoline and very cheap. The only benefit and perhaps the autonomy.
+The Fast Lane Truck I would not recommend it for heavy commercial use but occasionally with a cargo load maybe but we run them really hard. our mechanics hate them because if water gets splashed under neath they constantly throw belts of and electronics tend to fail as well
the majority of the ambulances in south africa are sprinters, never have i ever heard of one flipping over, most are 2.2diesels , more than enough power. maybe train the drivers better?
between the car and truck channels you guys are rockin out the quality vids. Thanks for the vids
+warwick gladstone thanks for the kind comment. You are most welcome!
+The Fast Lane Truck my frampa has a mid 2000 desert runner
+The Fast Lane Truck ANY off-road capable 4X4 Mercedes won't be cheap and ANY Mercedes that's cheap won't be GOOD ANYWAY😂💪🇺🇸✌
Not sure why you were so surprised by the Nissan desert runner, Toyota has been making the similar Prerunner 2x for years, also.
Definition of a Pickup Truck: "A pickup truck is a light duty truck having an enclosed cab and an open cargo area with low sides and tailgate."

I own a Desert Runner and yes they are 2wd but because they are prerunners and they are good in snow and mood I love it can't complaint about it
Thank you so much for making quality videos and being very informative. Thank you TFL Truck
Now I love these videos and they are very helpful and interesting to watch, they only help the people that buy these trucks brand new (and viewers in the states). I'm really liking these type of videos on both the car and truck channels.
What about the six speed Tacoma? So rare you can't find it on the website but they have them
I don't understand the hype over the Desert Runner. Isn't the Toyota Tacoma Prerunner essentially the same thing? If I remember correctly, Nissan came out with the Desert Runner specifically to compete with the Prerunner for buyers that wanted the 4wd look without 4wd.
The Ridgeline is not a truck and it never will be
Nathan said that
Its a crossover ute
It's a CRV with a box
+Blake Rye Actually a Pilot
In its present form I can't consider the Ridgeline a real truck. I guess its trying to be the modern El Camino. Now if they would put it on a Truck frame and make it rear wheel drive. Having said all of that I do think they will find a nich. Mostly in the citys or some such.I just don't think I want one though.
My uncle has a manual 2008 ram 2500 with the cummins.. he loves it, no worry about wearing out a auto and it gives him more control of the truck while hauling
I love the top 5 vids. They never get old
The Nissan Desert Runner trim has been around a while. I had a 2000 model.
That's sweet that ram still offers a Manual transmission in HD! I have a 13 Tacoma 4x4 v6 with the 6-speed manual, they are a blast to drive
I test drove a manual 2016 Cummins Ram Big Horn prior to purchasing my automatic Laramie Cummins. well here on the Appalachian Mt that is all you see when getting a Cummins is Manuals LOL. But there are also Truck and tractor pulls every weekend somewhere close by. Dodge HD have always been this way.
Nissan made a desert runner in the late 80s as well.
They used the manual ram in the movie interstellar.
I guess because I'm from a huge farming area, and I sold RAM, we sold a ton of rams with manuals. It's not a unicorn by any means out here.
Great video, as always!
But please do something about the sound quality...
Thanks, guys!

Working at Nissan in Texas, we have a Desert Runner on the lot right now.
The Nissan Frontier Desert Runner is not the only truck of its kind. The Toyota Tacoma TRD Off Road can be had in 2wd as well and in my opinion a way better option with bilstiens, a locking rear diff, and skid plates, and better interior amenities.
Ram used to be mainly manual transmission.
Have you guys considered doing podcasts at all? I think that's an area you guys would do well in.
I own the Nissan Frontier Desert Runner in a crew cab, wish It was 4WD but it's a great truck to drive..
You can get both the 2500 and 3500 Ram in manual. Including a well equipped and in crew cab, long bed and dually
The 6speed Ram is pretty cool
the dealership I work for literally just received a ram 2500 with a manual transmission today
Bullshit!
Toyota Sienna is available in AWD, and you should know that because that's where I heard it from over on your sister station TFLcar.
I saw a new Mercedes van that was 4x4 just this past weekend here in Texas (on the lot for sale). Not sure why you are saying only one is made.
A buddy of mine brought an ram 2500 stick on eBay a couple of years ago and he loves it
Chevrolet makes a CNG Silverado in the 2500
Where is the install video for that JK winch bumper combo? Tommy can try the hard way up cliffhanger 2.0.
What about the 2wd Jeep JK? (I don't know if they still produce them but they are out there)
Hope Y'All can do a review with the 4x4 van soon. It would be great to do a snowy drive if you can. Something like the loveland pass drive Y'All done a few years ago with the Lexus. Hey TFLT, great vid. Quick question. What is the tow rating for the RAM 2500 with the manual transmission? I can't seem to find any specs on the RAM website, and figured you guys would probably know.
16,100lbs tow rating for a crew cab 4x4 manual Cummins
when you mentioned the sprinter 4x4 was the only 4x4 van from a manufacturer you forgot about the vw transporter 4 motion
It’s funny how people get all exited about Cummins 3500/4500s once you get into medium duty/heavy duty freight liners and Mack’s,those trucks are like toys
Of ALL the things I know about cars I had NO IDEA that Chrysler Corp built a RAM 1500 with a manual transmission
Why do people seem to hate the Ridgeline so much. No it is not for towing a massive trailer or for hard core off roading. +Vikk 54 AWD is superior to 4wd in all situations moron.
the sprinter is the only 4wd van from the manufacturer in the US ? you don't get the vw transporter 4Motion ?
It's smaller than the sprinter of course, but it's a good one for a small RV.
Nope. No VW transporter here in the US.
we dont get any utilitarian vehicles that have uses or capability im kinda sad bout that
I have driven one of those manual desiel trucks... They are popular with the ranchers in Idaho and Wyoming. Dodge had a bad reputation with their automatic truck transmissions for a decade or so.
we had one of the manual ram 3500's come into our shop!
Did you guys ever make a video of a ram 2500 with a manual transmission ?
Us native Texans don't want a fucking E-assist truck.
Especially not from California..
As a fellow Texan, I agree with you. I want a REAL truck with a REAL V8 in it.
+BurnoutMaster a real truck is a diesel.....
+Miguel Garcia the powerstroke and duramax are both v8!
+Dodge 318 Cummins we both know thats not what he was implying....lol
The Nissan isn't very rare. You can get a Tacoma Prerunner and a Ram Rebel both get the 4wd look and goodies available in 2wd.
is the Desert Runner good for off road?
4WD= Low range transfer case
AWD= No low range
Van= Body on frame design with 3/4 and 1 ton options
Minivan= Unibody vehicle based off a light duty car chassis
You could do a video about great trucks and cars that are only sold out of the US and that you would like to have! Thant would be great..
I would love to have a Ram 2500 with the 4WD and Cummins I-6 6-speed manual combo but that engine is so expensive, I really want to learn how to drive a manual.
From when manual transmision can haul and tow less weight than automatic transmision?
is there brand new 6 speed manual toyota midsize suv available ?
Toyota actually makes a 2WD version of the Tacoma TRD Off Road. It’s a desert runner with a rear locker.
there is actually a manual trans ram like that one in my town at a used lot
That Mercedes builds the only 4 wheel drive van is not entirely true. whenever andre isnt in a video. i just ponder what SUV or truck he's off flooding
Very cool gents!!! I'm digging that RAM ;-)
my grampa in mexico has a 2000, s
desert runner
This is the 2nd video I've seen now with both of these guys in it where Nathan looks like he is absolutely annoyed with Roman.
California uses a lot of CNG trucks in their service fleet. Saw multiple while visiting SF.
only in the big city's, I haven't seen any in nor cal where I am.
+customskate420 Yea saw them down near Fishermans Wharf in SF probably around 10-12 of them
I haven't seen any where I live either, Norcal boonies
In arkansas seems like most ram hd are 6 speed manual. except for the top model fancy duely.
You said that's the only van with 4 wheel drive. But the Toyota Sienna has a available awd
I favor manual transmissions which the majority of my vehicles have. But, my favorite of the 5 you listed is the new Honda Ridgline! I wish some company would stop the BS and build and release an all electric truck with 4x4 option.
"Stick on the Ram - the best antitheft system ever!" Well, nowadays...
2015 was the last year that you can get a standard transmission on a extended cab frontier.
You guys are the best
the ram has CNG
Have you guys gotten to drive a ViaTrux yet?
Do a review on the Dodge Ram Minotaur
I'm pretty sure the only diesel desert runners are all still prototypes...
Chevrolet also has a CNG figuration front the factor on their 6.0 trucks
What about GMC savanna and chevy one are they not made them any more
Toyota Sienna has an awd option
KawiET awd =/= 4x4
They were not talking about AWD minivan's, they were talking about 4wd van's with a low range transfer case.
I had a 2005 nismo frontier that was 2wd with a locking rear diff.
Full size with stick shift = most effective anti theft on the market!
....Isn't the Dessert Runner....the same type called the Pre Runner by Toyota...;---)........
Here in Brazil . And cheaper to install a feed system with the cylinder in the car that pay the gasoline so expensive. And a good economy at the end of the quotas. But there is gasoline and very cheap. The only benefit and perhaps the autonomy.
TFL would mind to REVIEW the JEEPNEY in the Philippines, there Diesel lol
I drive a sprinter 2wd as a ambulance and it sucks we have had wrecks with them and they flip every time also lack of power no get up and go
+david smith that's interesting to know. The center of gravity must be very high on the Sprinter.
+The Fast Lane Truck I would not recommend it for heavy commercial use but occasionally with a cargo load maybe but we run them really hard. our mechanics hate them because if water gets splashed under neath they constantly throw belts of and electronics tend to fail as well
Sprinter ambulance seems like a terrible decision, the rest of your post makes no sense.
In holland we have a lot of Mercedes Sprinter ambulances they seem to work fine here.
the majority of the ambulances in south africa are sprinters, never have i ever heard of one flipping over, most are 2.2diesels , more than enough power. maybe train the drivers better?
Ford shld bring back the diesel E350 4×4.
YES!!! I'd love a 4x4 van. wife would hate it... lol!
If memory serves the Mercedees 4x4 van to make off road type RV's. A concept I find interesting.
+T Ritchie but not with solid axles and a large diesel
And one other thing, I have a unicorn that you didn't mention. I have TRD everything 2wd Tacoma.
lol
What year? My buddy has an 04 pre runner. literally has every option. trd, sr5 and leather and just has an electric dif lock and no 2wd
2005
Theyre talking about unicorns here, not retarded horses with paper cones glued to their heads.
How about top 10 cars that should be discontinued due to sales, but are not.
What about the best of them all. MALOO R8 LSA
vw rabbit tdi pickup is fwd and it's classified as a pickup
I like the staged bumper laying on the ground.
What happen to the Toyota Sienna it is a 4x4 van
We have two electric Chevy 1500 at work there dope
why can't you tow alot with a truck that's stick shift? most tractor trailers are stick shift and those engines put out 2,000ft lbs of torque
But owning a manual is a great way to not let anyone drive your truck!
my 04 f350 diesel has a manual. its a six speed.
do a top 5 old trucks that say a teen could buy
Ram has cng as well
how about there is 5 super hot and tough truck that the Americans didn't knew that they exist in other countries.
t he small trucks formerly available in America are now being built and sold in Europe which is a shame :)
My grandpa has a 2015 manual 2500 ram
that merc is not the only 4wd van on sale..... mitsubishi delica 4wd
