Respect to you both, for not going down the over dramatised TH-cam vernacular of sacred for our lives. It was clearly blowing with the rain and spray going horizontally but you both kept your heads and just got on with it, NO BS!!! That's why I subscribed. Hey great choice on the emotive music. It looks like you guy's have some talent , something that belies a lot of TH-cam saying Chanels. Keep up the good work, I look forward to seeing your adventures unfold. Once again absolute RESPECT!!!

Hey thank you for sharing. Awesome footage. I am curious at about the 10:10 mark in the video there is a yacht with an interesting storm type sail setup, presumably to keep head to wind. I have never seen this before and would like to know more. Limited keel boat storm sailing hence question. Thanks. Best wishes.

imagine that in this storm you are on the high seas and do not know how to lie down in a drift in order to rest and not jump out onto the rocks

  • @FranklinGray

Hurricanes are no fun. Well, the first one can be exciting, but after that, it's just uncomfortable with a lot of worrying. I've ridden out 2 cat 2s with the eye going over top and a few cyclones. Did get some damage in the first one where a boat broke lose and it's bow Td me leaving a hole 2 feet above the water line.
I see you are catching rain water off the bimini so I'm guessing you don't have a water maker. I didn't have one in either of my cruising boats but I built in rain catching. At first I did it how you are doing it, running it into jugs but that got tiresome, especially me having to get up at 3 am to empty the jugs into the tank while it's raining so I can catch more.
What I did, on my Hunter 376 I drilled holes on the gunrail near the cockpit, closed off the midship drain spot , and installed a water fill connection in the hole. Then on the inside of the boat I ran hoses from the connection to the tank. Then when I wanted to catch rainwater I would open the fitting, close off the other drain with a sandbag at the end of the gunrail so it all drained into the tank. On my current boat, an old Whitby 55, it already had the deck drains going inside the boat and out a thru-hull so I just installed a Y value so I could divert the rainwater into my tank. Due to how this was setup where it would also draw the dirt from the deck, I put inline filters.
I lived off rain water this way for 6 years. Never had a need for a water maker after that. With that said though, I say because I know you are getting ready to cross the Pacific, I bought two 100 gallon water blatters for my crossing. I put one on each gunrail but the cap busted off about halfway. I still had 15 gallons in each blatter so I used that to fill my tank (60 gallons). It was just me so my water usage was very low but was really glad I still had what was left of those blatters. I also had 10 jugs which I never used. When I pulled into Marquesas Islands I had about 3/4 a tank of water and the ten 5 gallon jugs. Which means I used, just by myself and I'm good with water, about 50 gallons in 30 days. It's crazy because I thought I was only using about 1 gallon a day. So take plenty of water for the 2 of you.

In that situation you should immediately prepare the second anchor as a “safety anchor” and then try to fix the engine. Just my opinion. 😢
