  • Animated illustration showing how electrical data is converted to optical data. This video is designed to support lecturers in the classroom and aid students in their understanding. The video does not include narration as the explanation of the process is presented in purely visual terms in order to make the content more accessible.

The music made me want to gauge my eyes out, but the animation was awesome. Thank you sir. And thanks for replying to Bolat. The answer was interesting.

Nice explanation and animation, but some things are not correct. For example, the phase of the orange output wave does change when the amplitude goes from 0 to 1. And when transmitting bits, the transition is fast, and then it stays in the 0/1 state for a while before switching.

As far as I know form basic physics, photons do not get interact with magnetic/electric fields. Is there any special materials which has different crystal properties based on different forces which is a result of different type of electric field. Or am I missing something?

Hello, Bolat. In this case, the electric field that represents the electrical data, changes the refractive index of the optical fiber which in turn modifies the behavior of the optical signal.

Hi is this used in data transmission over fibre optic communication ? If so how the data is retrieved at the receiver end ? Clearly this looks like the phase of the light is being modulated so how this phase change is detected by a photo diode again to interpret the data ?

seems like its an amplitude modulation of the sum of the two waves. So the signal would be received as an intensity at the photo diode. The phase modulated wave is not transmitted directly it is added to the unmodulated wave.

Using an electric field? Fields superpose, so the EM waves would not be affected by an electric field. The medium itself would need to change in nature for the waves' propagation to be affected.
