Incentive spirometry (spirometer) demonstration with step-by-step instructions on how to use this device. As a patient or nurse, it is important you know the proper procedure for using an incentive spirometer. An incentive spirometer is used to help improve lung function in patients and prevent atelectasis, especially prior to surgery. Many times a patient is educated how to use an incentive spirometer prior to surgery that involves the chest, thorax, or abdomen. These patients are at high risk for developing a condition called atelectasis. Atelectasis is a condition where the lung or part of it is collapsed and the alveoli sacs are unable to inflate and perform gas exchange. By using an incentive spirometer prior to and after surgery, it decreases the chances of a patient developing this condition. An incentive spirometer is also used in patients with lung disorders such as COPD and in treatment of pneumonia etc.
