Have owned not resided in Torrevieja since 1997. Torrevieja council services has always been superior with us than Orihuela costa. Have visited Orhiuela town several times and as you say the money spent there compared with the coast is obvious. The town is inhabited with a mainly Spanish population against the coast which is occupied by northern Europeans whose taxes are obviously been used as a cash cow to fund the town. The only way to change this is via the ballot box.

@@davidevans267 Torrevieja, from Punta Prima North, comes under Alicante province, which is kept in a very good and tide position, All the areas he mentioned is under Orihuela City, the city of Orihuela is immaculate, the Costa is in an awful state. The weeds along the roads by us are like bushes all along the road. The rubbish by the bins is in a diabolical state, and we are fortunate if they are cleared once a month. Bins full to overflowing, and are hand me downs from the city, second hand. Ten plus years ago, the Costa was like the city as it is today. We need action down here on the costas.

The money(tax) we pay en Orihuela Costa goes to Orihuela, that is why it is clean there and that is it.

I live in the campo north of Crevillente. Coming home today on the small road that leads up to my house, there was a tractor and cutter clearing all the verges of vegitation both sides of the road. Also the bin areas are much cleaner now since the council and police started to use drones to catch fly tippers and fine them.
Orihuela town has always been nice and clean, whereas the urbanisations that are around the town not so.

We've been coming out to Play Flamenca and La Zenia for quite some time and you can see the state of the sides of the roads is getting worse and the bins are a problem, but a lot of the rubbish seems to be from builders renovating properties not all obviously and a friend has said they don't seem to be watering grass in public areas unlike in the town! We'll be out for August so it will be interesting to see the difference from last year! Thanks for the heads up video!

For the reasons you explain the municipality of Pilar de horadada seperated from Orihuela in the eighties. Now it's very well maintained area just south of Orihuela Costa.

Can Orihuela Costa not do the same ? Or is it only residents in the area that could vote to do that ?

There has been talk about the Costa doing the same thing for years, maybe it will happen, who knows. It would be a good move we think.

Hi Barry and thanks for this insight of the deterioration of the refuse areas and road quality in and around Villa Martin, what you have shown as been representative of the state of the refuse areas and road quality for what I’d say as now been 4/5 years. Question for me is how do we make the council / town hall acknowledge there is a large disparity between Orihuela Costa and the orihuela town and the Costa areas need investment and robust plans to maintenance these areas. Do we need to raise a petition, what’s the protocols, how do we move this forward. Appreciate you taking the time to highlight this ongoing issue. Thanks Simon

Interesting videos. We explored these same areas on Orihuela Costa recently (2 weeks ago!) and were turned off by what I thought was excessive traffic, noise, chaos, etc, but in hindsight wondering if we were seeing some of the overgrowth and trash. Really appreciate your perspective! Not at all surprised that the area with more permanent residents gets more attention.

The traffic is busier at this time of year through to end of August. Don’t let it put you off, there is so much that the area has to offer 🤩

I had to go to the town once and driving around looking for the place I wanted, lots of narrow roads and lots of traffic.

A very good comparison between the two Orihuelas, neat and tide and grossly neglected. La Florida gets a good cleanup once a year just before the childrens' Halloween Parade, the rest of the time it's forgotten. One thing I note is that there are no Food Waste disposal facilities in either location, despite a European Directive to divert food waste from landfill, compared to Torrevieja where there are facilities all over the town especially near restaurants and they are properly treated so no smells either. Another point in the La Florida area there is only about 3 cm of tarmac on the road surface, the kerb stones are a lot higher than elsewhere which says that there was more tarmac to be laid but that never happened, dodgy builders or dodgier council oversight. It's such a shame that the services which residents and businesses pay for are not being delivered.

It has been the same for as long as I have been coming/living here, 25 years now. Costa’s are a cash cow for the city. However I would say that the Spanish have it right, there isn’t 3 bins outside every property and the general waste is collected every morning rather than going off for two weeks as it does in the UK.

Barry, your video is spot on. I own a property in the same area as you since 2012 and things have been going downhill ever since. I have personally complained to the local Council offices, to clean up their act, but I was successful only once. The reason for the Council to act like this, is that there are little or no voters in Orihuela Costa, as the population is either ex-pats, part-time residents or tourists. My property is just a few yards from the Centro Municipal de Orihuela Costa, on Calle El Cipres, 200 yards from the English Supermarket in Lomas de Cabo Roig.
Right in the corner of the Centre you will find the dirtiest example of what you are trying to depict in your videos. The Centro Municipal itself has been abandoned, and the weeds will eventually engulf it.
The only way, IMHO, to change this situation, is by a co-ordinated Group Litigation (UK) or Class Action (USA), combined with an effective strong campaign involving Social Media and long term demonstrations in key spots of Orihuela Costa, in order to name and shame the people in charge. Orihuela Costa pays its Council Tax like everybody else, but the return is not there.
Having said that, the rubbish that accumulates at the kerb side is dumped by the same neighbours, including old furniture, demolition rubble and what not.
A palliative measure that the Council could explore, would be installing Council owned and marked skips in well know problematic spots for the people to throw there the items that otherwise will end on the street as you have filmed in recent days. It is sad to acknowledge that residents of the area behave like this, when if done in their country of origin, would land them with a hefty fine and/or in prison. I would never ever dream of doing that, here in Scotland. Something positive will come up from your videos on the matter.

We have a place in Punta Prima and know that the council are not the best at waste collection, however and especially at this time of year it is worse due to lazy residents and renters not being bothered putting rubbish in the bins, just dumping it for some else to clear 😮

How can it be Orihuela’s fault that builders, restaurants, craftsmen puts all there rubbish in the road because they wouldn't pay to get rid of it.

I assume commercial waste and domestic waste have the same Parameters as UK as in commercial businesses must pay to dispose of their waste?

orihuela costa generates 90% of orihuelas taxes....yet gets around 2%of the budget spent on it.......its an absolute disgrace. ive run my business here for 20 years this year, and contributed 100s of thousands of euros in taxes , to see it all get spent on the towns cultural centres , and museums ....AND NOTHING GET SPENT HERE is infuriating......the kids parts are even worse

Weve had our apartment in Punta Prima for 22 years & back in the day we used to have bins collected every night 7 days a week if I remember rightly & anything at side of bins was mostly taken too. We now only have bins collected twice a week I think but dumping at bins is more prevalent. People dont give a shit Baz, its the same with those that dont pick up there dog shit. You only need 1 person to bring a location down.

All the voters are inland, therefore upkeep of those areas isn't treated as an afterthought.
Think back to the disaster with the Chiringuitos last year or the piling up of rubbish in 2022 due to some sort of strike or fallout with waste collection workers, coinciding ironically with the same happening in my local council district back home in northern Ireland in August, the problem literally followed us down to the med 😅
Plus you can see the gradual neglect over time, that Plaza area down at Flamenca Beach and the upkeep of public spaces as far as weeding or watering greenery/plants are concerned, people can see the decline very clearly who've been feequenting or living in the area for more than a decade.
