  • Two C-47 Dakotas at North Weald Airfield depart for a special 80th D-Day remembrance parachute drop over Normandy. The Normandy landings were the landing operations and associated airborne operations on Tuesday, 6 June 1944 of the Allied invasion of Normandy in Operation Overlord during World War II. Codenamed Operation Neptune and often referred to as D-Day, it is the largest seaborne invasion in history. The operation began the liberation of France, and the rest of Western Europe, and laid the foundations of the Allied victory on the Western Front.
The aircraft in this video are:
    C-47 “Placid Lassie” ( N74589) - Tunison Foundation - USA
Placid Lassie is the Tunison Foundation's 1943 Douglas C-47 Skytrain. Placid Lassie is a real war hero and is not a replica, or a deep restoration based upon parts from multiple separate airplanes. Her same rivets crossed the English Channel on June 6th, 1944 in service of our country. On the morning of June 6th, 1944, Lassie and the rest of the 74th TCS took off at 0200 hours to invade Normandy. In total, they carried 155 men and equipment for the U.S. Army's 101st Airborne Division in assault gliders. At about 0400, they dropped their gliders. Lassie returned to Normandy at 2100 hours towing another glider. Radio Operator Ed Tunison remembered that the sky was full of aircraft, in contrast to the relative silence of morning. In the days following the D-Day Invasion, Lassie flew resupply missions into France in support of the 101st Airborne.
    C-47 “That’s All, Brother” ( N47TB) - Commemorative Air Force Centex Wing - USA
On June 6, 1944, That’s All, Brother led the main airborne invasion of Normandy. Piloted by Lt. Col John Donalson, the plane led over 800 C-47s that dropped over 13,000 paratroopers into a battle that changed the course of mankind. Operated by Commemorative Air Force, Centex, Texas,

Don't they look Regal? The emblem of invasion. They came by air, or by sea to give us our freedom. Simply majestic those C47. Whether in RAF or USAF livery, they played an essential role. Perfect tribute to those D-Day Landings in Normandy, so we can be free in return for each and everyone who gave theirs. Respectfully done Ted and Nikos. A Trait of the TCS 🫡👍. Respect from us here in 2024 with the sounds to give me a massive smile. Lest We Forget! ❤

One of the most important aircraft of WW2. Without them, things would be very different indeed. There were fighters, there were bombers, but you needed aircraft to haul cargo, transport troops, drop paratroops, tow gliders, and as a flying ambulance. This was most vital

Amazing to think of what they witnessed 80 years ago 😔
Thanks Ted and Nikos, for keeping the memories going, and making sure their stories are still told

Thank you so much - I love the Gooney birds.
From the sound of that huge radial to the slow cruise when they fly past it's just wonderful ❤
Great footage as we always get from you Nikos 👍❤

Great stuff to behold. Last summer the C-47 "That's All Brother" and B-17 "Yankee Lady" flew over my home. These are amazing warbirds. Thank you for your channel from a newly subscribed viewer!

As A young boy I visited North Weald air show several times with my parents and it was served by the Central line in those days. Great to see the airfield still in use although sadly not for regular air shows.
