Looking good. It seems like the more you organize, the more you find to organize if that makes sense. I was lucky, and a town neer me replaced all the school lockers and gave away the old ones, I added shelves in them and hung them on the wall 12 in a row. It made a huge difference. Thanks for sharing
What you say makes perfect sense. I do my best not to fill up all my space, but I’m not doing a very good job of it. Finding a bunch of free lockers would be a windfall. Sounds like what you have works well. Thanks for sharing and have a great day.
I invested a lot of time this year in shop organization. I purchased used industrial cabinets, repaired and refurbished the cabinets, and built special purpose racking. I sorted through 2 decades of tooling collection sorting and stocking upwards to 50 drill indexes and nearly fully stocking lettered, numbered, and fractional Huot overstock drill cabinets. I sorted and organized 1000+ mills, cutters, reamers, taps, etc. I have stocked each work station with dedicated or frequently used tooling and special tools. I had adequate space to sort and store hardware by size, type and grade. I organized and stored tooling, and constructed work benches. Most work benches have dedicated vises. I salvaged and restored vintage automotive ignition cabinets into shop storage systems. Yesterday, I picked up 2 large industrial tooling vending machine cabinets that I will soon employ for large tools that don't fit into my mechanic chests and to organize fixtures and machining aids like rotary tables, large chucks and larger Morse taper tooling. I only have 2 double stack mechanic chests in the auto service bay, so being short on drawer space I constructed a hammer "caddy" to hold about 25 of my common use mechanic hammers. I made tool caddies for common use tools at multiple work stations in my machine shop. The organization is enormous help. I use Akrow style bins to organize tooling like abrasive, gringing wheels, burrs, etc. "Small parts tackle boxes" organize impact bits, jig saw blades, spade bits, etc, while providing portability. I use traditional mechanic and machinist chests in the woodshop and machine shop for hand tools. I made drawer inserts to manage router bits. I made tooling racks at the lathes and mill. My clamp collection is upwards to 250, and still it Serna like I never have enough clamps, most of these have dedicated clamp racks at or near the work stations. I am still embarrassed at how incomplete my organization is. My shop organization is a work-in-process. I keep getting distracted with real shop work and constantly adding new machinery rehab and restoration projects. It is hard to turn down a project whe. I find a long desired machine nor quite shop ready. I have purchased over a dozen machines this year. I have completed or nearly completed about 7 of those projects. I can't decide if I enjoy the hunt and restoration more than actually using the completed and in-service machinery or not. Both dynamics are a real pleasure. Fortunately, I have sons and grandsons with skill and equipment to assist me.
You are most definitely an industrious and busy man. It also sounds like you are very well organized. I know that ongoing projects can make a mess of the shop. So my shop is a mess but I also almost always have 2 to 3 projects going at the same time. Thank you so much for sharing all of this and have a happy Thanksgiving.
My shop is enclosed in a corner of our garage . Its 8½x8½ , with a 10 foot ceiling . Organization is ALWAYS on my mind . Envious of larger shops , and theres NOTHING wrong with yours 👍🏻 Thanks for the ideas .
I feel what you’re saying. There have been times in my life when my shop was the same size as what you are telling me. My father always had a shop, and when he retired, they moved in next-door to us, and he build a shop that he always wanted . A few years later he was diagnosed with prostate cancer and Parkinson’s. So, I inherited his shop and feel blessed to have it, though I miss him greatly. Hope you’ll come by and visit again soon. Have yourself a great day.
I think anytime you present new projects that you have done that improves efficiency that it motivates viewers to do the same. It gives new ideas. Way to go. I won't go into my mess. Haha.
I so appreciate you sharing your time and allowing me to come into your home and present what I’m doing. If it’s motivating great! Thanks so much for visiting me here in the shop and good luck on cleaning up your mess.😃 Hope you have a great week.
This is a great video. I really need to straighten up my shop. I like what you did with the paint cans. we also have a lot of cans of paint all over the place. This has inspired me to go through the cans and get rid of the really old stuff and organize what I want to keep. Between this video and the caddy challenge , I have decided to make October shop clean and organize month. Thanks.
I just did a minor reorganization and I moved a couple things from one wall to another. It makes more sense now, but I still keep walking over to the "old spot" I had things!
😄😄 I know exactly what you mean. It actually takes me several months to get out of the habit of moving that direction. Thanks for your visit and have a great day.
Great video! I've been collecting home made shelving people toss out from time to time. One such shelf was built as an entertainment center...the opening for what was a big TV will now be for a shop window. Love this stuff, tHanks for the video.
My shop is packed to the rim with tools and supplies. I need organization so I am in the process some what the same as you going through and bringing things of likeness to one spot for better accessibility to it and organization.. Good luck on your quest and hopefully one day soon we can do a video of the results in a very positive way.
Thank you very much. And good luck to you as well. I know that when you get something organized, there’s a real sense of accomplishment. Thanks so much for your visit and have a great week.
Looking good! I always try to have a place for something but my problem is where did I put it.😅 So I guess I'm not that organized. Thanks for your efforts and see you next time!
Yes! I know I have it around here somewhere, I just don’t remember where I put it for safekeeping.😄😄 I’ll look forward to your next visit and have a great week
I have a small shed and a covered deck so I organize everything in milk crates and haul them out according to the project I’m doing . My router is on a small table so that helps . I live in Canada so I get only about six months of good “project” weather. The milk crates do find their way into the house over the winter for a few non messy things . Thank you for the great ideas
Thank you for some great ideas. I appreciate how people organize and take care of their work spaces. Thanks so much for stopping by and I hope you’ll come visit again soon. Have a great day.
I'm getting my shop off the ground and in the first two months it was a mess. The first thing I did was sort everything in to piles, so if i owned it it was in the pile. Then I started looking for places to store the piles; that worked fine. Five months in, I can fine thing, I just don't like the time to get things out of my tool box, cabinets, and off shelving. Month seven I started a french cleat wall, with goal of only putting what I use on it, I have a small shop. The rest will be in cabinets and hoping to remove the shelving. It will take some time. all the best!
I have to say I think it’s great that at least you have a plan. Hang in there and keep it up. Thanks for sharing this with us and I appreciate you stopping by for a visit. Hope you have a great week.
Hey !Bonjour vraiment une superbe organisation, j'aime quand les même choses sont ensemble. Une bonne organisation des outils ou des produits et la moitié du travail est fait. Car on perd plus de temps, si l'on ne trouve pas ce qu'il faut. ❤
You sure said that very well. My frustration is when I know I have something and yet I don’t remember where I put it for safekeeping. Little by little will try to get things put together. Thanks so much for your visit and have a great week.
Hey big fella, I’m in a world of pain in my shop. I have too much of everything and I don’t know where to put it all. I spend more time cleaning up and organising than anything else and I’m sick of it, I just want to go out and do what I enjoy instead of cleaning. My wife says to concentrate on what I really want to do (collecting and restoring tools and I’m an amateur machinist) and get rid of everything else but that’s easier said than done. I’m planning on doing a workshop tour video on my channel but I’m too embarrassed at the moment to show it off. I think I’m just going to have to bite the bullet and start throwing things out. You’ve inspired me though so thanks for that. Cheers, Stuart 🇦🇺
I appreciate you sharing this with me Stuart. It sounds like you are in the same situation as many of us are. I heard a bunch of stuff because I think to myself Sunday I might need it.😄 then I have to find some place to store it. Whatever you do make sure that when you’re in the shop you’re having fun. Thanks so much for sharing. Many of us can relate. Have a great week.
I enjoy organizing stuff, but the challenge is putting stuff back when I'm done. I've multiplied my frustration by having 3+ little shops with some duplication in each place.
I can relate so well to you. Sometimes there’s a lot of stuff that just doesn’t seem to have a home and it ends up on my workbench. I am also blessed with a couple of outbuildings and duplicates in several of them. Thanks so much for stopping by to visit.
My shop is a mess. I've got to do something for sure. I've got several big shelving units but they're 4' deep and very hard to find things more than a foot back. Mathew Peach has a shelving plan I'd like to build as well as a modular bench plan that looks like it would fit my needs perfectly. But like many of us I've got about 6 projects right in the middle of being done. Lol but I think it would be wise to stop on them and concentrate on getting organized...
It sounds like you have ADD like I do. I usually have 2 to 4 projects going at a time and when I walk into the shop I think to myself, “which one do I want to work on?” Tear into whichever one you want to and good luck on getting yourself organized. Thanks for stopping by and have a great week.
It seems like shop organization is a never ending process. I've been trying to get more organized, partially inspired by your caddy challenge. I do have an old metal cabinet where I keep paint cans, spray paint, brushes and other painting related paraphernalia. Other than that, I try to keep things organized by task but it is not easy.
My wife half jokingly and half accurately tells first time visitors to our home that I only have a shop because I like to organize and reorganize everything. I tell people I have so many tools because one day I want to learn how to use them, but if I don't have them I will never learn. Like your paint and sandpaper I keep everything together. If it would ever cool off I might even build some additional shelves. I hate drawers because my x-ray vision has failed me. I hang whatever I can on chicken wire on my walls so I can see the stuff. My wife makes labels for the few boxes and drawers I grudgingly use.
Sounds just like so many of us. I do agree with you that I don’t care for cabinets and drawers because I can’t see what I have. I’d like things on shelves where I can see them, the problem is they get so dusty and dirty. Sometimes I use clear containers so I can see into them that works occasionally for some things. Thanks for your visit and hope you have a great week.
Most of my stuff is stored in Rubbermaid bins. Other than the paint, everything i use when I paint is in a bin. My tool belt and anything I would use while building(with wood) is in another bin. I have a tool tote stocked with basic homeowner tools in case I need to do work away from home . I'm still trying to set up my work bench, so everything else is stored where I have room until I can get it finished.
You sound like so many of us with the ongoing struggle. I have to admit it though, it is kind of fun, at least it is satisfying when you finish organizing a spot in your shop. Hang in there and keep up the good work. Thanks for stopping by and have a great week.
That sounds ingenious and efficient. I like to hear about it and see how people do things. It’s a great way to share ideas. Thanks so much for your visit and have a great weekend.
After a decade of not being able to find anything in my shop i built a floor to ceiling shelf. Bottom rwo shelves have 18 gal totes then four shelves of .30 and .50 cal ammo cans then two shelves of sortamos and eveytjing is labled an the out side so i know what is inside. Whats great for me is i can take the ammo can or sortamo to the work bench and back to the shelf without habing to really feel the strain of cleaning my shop.
It sounds like genius to me. I like the fact that you just put away totes and don’t have to clean up a big mess. Thanks so much for sharing and come back again soon. Have a great day.
One tip to improve your glass jar access!!! I am 68 Earth Years as I refer to age!!! no one wants to be referred to as 21 years OLD? In Earth Years we are very youthful, Ha! My father in the day, would expand on your jar idea, with a 2x2 wooden dowel. That expands your glass jar viewing to rotate the view on four sides? It would spin, you know how to apply such screws or bolts in the ends of the wooden dowel! so the glass jar visual would accommodate four viewing platforms!!! Robert
I like it. I think I can kind of visualize what you’re talking about. Thank you so much for sharing and come back by the shop again soon. Have a great day.
I saw organ in the title and thought " This is going to be great!, I hope he plays that spooky Halloween music ". Geez.... This was a trick to make me clean up my mess in my garage! Who put you up to it? It may be messy but I know where everything is..... ......no I don't...I can't even find the pressure washer in here somewhere.
In my shed I put 1 X 4 boards between the wall beams, which turns the walls into a "pantry" and makes use of a lot of otherwise wasted space. Will I ever feel organized? No.
Well, good luck with that. It is an ongoing struggle. Many times I think to myself I need a bigger shop, but then I’m afraid I’d just have a bigger mess. Thanks so much for your visit and have a great day.

You are exactly right. Thanks so much for visiting me here in the shop and have a great week.

Your new paint shelf is one of those things every time you grab something off it you'll look at it and say "Why Didn't I Build That Years Ago".
You’re probably absolutely right. Thanks so much for visiting me here in the shop and hope you have a great week.
It’s starting to look nice and neat. You have a very methodical mind.
I don’t know if it’s neat, but I appreciate your kind sentiments. Always great to have you come by and visit and hope you have a great week.

That sounds ingenious and efficient. I like to hear about it and see how people do things. It’s a great way to share ideas. Thanks so much for your visit and have a great weekend.

3:30 I use the bottom of old sneakers for this!
Now that’s a great idea. Thanks for sharing. Come back again soon and have a great day.
I need to work on organizing my shop space. It's piled up oddly and not flowing at the moment.
Well, good luck with that. It is an ongoing struggle. Many times I think to myself I need a bigger shop, but then I’m afraid I’d just have a bigger mess. Thanks so much for your visit and have a great day.
@@toolscouter I know a bigger shop means a bigger mess for me.
Even with organization, a clean shop only lasts for a short time. A busy shop isn't the cleanest shop in my experience.
This is very true. So, I guess we’ll keep busy and live with some mess. Have a great week.
