First Timer's Guide To Packing Carry-On Only | Tips & Tricks I Learned After 35+ Countries

- 35+ countries and 90% of that time solo in dorm hostels with only my backpack. That's my travel history and this is why I feel qualified to talk about travelling minimally, carry-on only.
Travelling carry-on only has a lot of benefits: no risk of losing your luggage, you leave the airport immediately after immigration, and can be cheaper too! This is especially true in recent years as luggage is routinely lost and airports are understaffed to handle the volume of baggage.
But it takes a lot of discipline to pack light and some travel experience to know how and what to pack. Assess what you truly need, not what you MIGHT need. Once you figure that out, find a way to organize it so you're more efficient at taking items in and out of your carry-on. That efficiency is one of two main factors I consider for a successful carry-on only trip.
The other key is to not packing items you won't use. Don't worry about leaving something small behind, you can always buy that when you arrive.

I do seven weeks in Thailand with 12 Kilo. I prefer a soft bagpack because it is easier in buses and taxis. Sometimes I take a plastic bag with a clip instead of small bags, it is transparent and lighter. One cloth serves as a scarf, skirt, towel, hat and blanket. It can be a colorful cheap cotton.
The documents bag looks great. I won't be traveling for at least a few more years and yet I feel VERY compelled to get one. Such 'I Am An Adult And Have My Live Together' vibes!
To clarify: won't be traveling *again* for at least a few more years.
Proud to say that I am a light, carry-on only, traveler. When I checked a suitcase going to US, Paris and London it was an empty suitcase for bringing my loot back in. 🤭

One thing that you may/should check with the airline(s) is whether they would have an issue with your keeping an AirTag in your check-in luggage. I flew on JAL out of Hong Kong in early Feb (2023), and the agent at the counter explicitly asked about this and if I had one in the luggage.
Not sure how many airlines are like JAL, but just some food for thought.

Totally agree with taking as little as possible when travelling. I travel minimally (for instance, 8 countries in Northern Europe over 6 weeks) with a backpack I carry on. Did you not have to put your liquids in a 1l plastic bag since you did not check in your bag? I keep mine in the lid for easy access through security then transfer into my hanging toiletries bag until my next flight.

Sweet toiletries bag!
Tip for toothpaste: use tooth power. Really small bottle, not a 'liquid', also a mouthwash and lasts forever!
Oh I've never heard of tooth powder. Is it available in Canada? Also, I'm at the age now where the toiletry bag is the most exciting part of packing 🙃

The brand I use is Eco-Dent. I'm also outside the US and found the tooth powder on iHerb. It's basically a bath bomb for your mouth. The main ingredients are citric acid powder and baking soda so, when mixed with some water (or spit), it starts to foam. You can even clean your teeth without a toothbrush, if circumstances are tight. When traveling that means you could carry the little bottle in your backpack and pop in to any restroom (or discreet place to spit) and rinse your mouth.
My daughter took the tooth powder to the army and kept the bottle in her breast pocket. She could rinse her mouth out at any time on the way from A to B and it isn't a tube of paste that is going to make a mess if it gets squished and pops in your pocket during maneuvers. She also added some to her canteen regularly to clean it out. She then took it with her when she hiked our country's version of the Appalachian Trail for 3 months. Very useful. Even easier than tooth powder are tablets. You use one tablet per brushing. Lush Cosmetics is probably the best known company that makes them. Comes in several flavours.

I love the Muji products but the Muji toothbrush case is too small for any standard Australian toothbrush. Either a children’s toothbrush or Muji branded toothbrush will fit.
You’re right. The case is too small for a standard Colgate toothbrush.
