"Nothing To See Here!" | Migrant Channel Crossings Top 18,000 For 2024

- Talk’s Julia Hartley-Brewer reacts after more than 700 migrants crossed the Channel on the day two people died attempting the journey - the highest number of daily crossings since Sir Keir Starmer became Prime Minister.
The Home Office recorded 703 people arriving in the UK on Sunday in 11 boats, suggesting an average of 64 people per boat.
It comes as two people died in French waters while trying to cross the Channel, with others on board the boat understood to have been rescued and taken back to France.
French authorities are said to be leading the investigation into the deaths.
Julia says: "This is insane."

Maybe they wont heat the hotels. The operator of the hotel is making so much more money from the government, not heating them will only boost the profit.

The smugglers don't really care because they have already been paid.
They’d stop them in the water and bring them over on the ships that rescued them. This happens regularly in Italy. What you need is for people on the other side of the channel to NOT WANT to make the trip. For that to happen, you’d need the trip to somehow be more perilous (weather?) than it is now.
Just stop benefits etc and they won't want to come here. The royal navy is supposed to be our border protection. Not really happening is it.

The failure is in the judiciary, not the doctors. They did their job , and they charted in their notes ,that this person is dangerous to society. Epic failure on the court system . They failed to place this person in jail or institution

A boat has a set limit of persons in the boat. If you go over the set limit, then the risk to life increases dramatically , if the French coast guards allow this to happen daily, then they are responsible .

I haven't be able to fact check what I read regarding the recent death of a young woman who had some sort of choking episode on an over crowded boat. It was stated the French authorities reached the boat and took her off and asked who else wanted to be returned as the boat was unsafe. Others continued on their journey to UK and were left to do so. I was shocked about this as if true it means the only people on boats the French return to French shores are immigrants who agree to this. There is no enforcement!

I live on the Kent coast and I can predict when numbers are gonna be high - also that’s only the ones that come in at Dungeness /dover not the other much smaller boats that come in on various beaches further around the coast as far as the north kent coast that are seldom recorded.
