Hey folks thank you for tuning in for the garlic planting video! Sorry about the wind noise, I wish I could have been around on a calm day when Joel had his nephews over helping plant, but I'm just glad I didn't miss out on the entire thing! I plan to showcase some more of Joel's side of the business this winter...freeze dried candy and maple syrup, yummy!
Hi Jason. I am 7 and just did a video on planting garlic. You should come and watch. My dad said not to post the link here. Your brother planted a lot more garlic than me. I want to be a farmer one day. Thanks for the video bye!🎉
Hey Andrew, I will definitely check out your garlic planting video. You were actually the person I was referring to in the video when I mentioned that I had told someone we planted the third week of October and I was mistaken Since he plants the first week of November. keep up the good work!
Really enjoying your videos. I've planted hard-neck garlic at home garden scale for 10-12 years (in N.H., Missouri, now Colorado). Have planted Music & German Extra Hardy. We plant after the 1st frost, set the cloves in bottom of a trench made with edge of a hoe, pull the sides of the trench closed and mulch with about 3 inches of straw. We get 45 bulbs out of a 3 x 8 ft raised bed. We put 3 rows of 15, on 6" x 10" spacing. Best of luck to you and your brother. As long as the US has family farms, we have God's blessings.
Yea, shout out to Broyans Farms!! Wouldn't it help if the spikes were made of thicker wood, and longer?? That would ensure a wider and deeper hole. It would also help out more in the areas where the dirt is lower than the plastic.
👍, we want the hole as small as possible to keep the weeds from coming up next to the garlic…the cloves are easily pushed in with very little effort, a larger hole might allow the clove to fall over and not be faced up properly and not good soil contact. Thanks for the comment!
I was wondering about that. Does he plant only one variety? I just grow some in my garden. I plant more than 3 varieties, but in a small raised bed. That is interesting about the nematodes.
Hello Jason, I’m a subscriber and a farmer. I grow a lot of melons and I was wondering what variety of melons you grow. They’re so big and look good thank you Peter.
Those big beautiful cantaloupe are Avatar. The other variety is Aphrodite, not quite as large but very nice. My other favorite was discontinued two years ago, Verona. Were you only interested in cantaloupe or watermelon too?
А почему зубчики чеснока не замачиваете в сенной палочке? Сенная палочка кстати выдерживает кипячение в течении нескольких минут, можно сразу 2 вещи делать и нематоду вытравливать и заодно сенной палочкой обрабатывать 👍
Thank you I actually bought the scape seeds off the internet a few years ago. I thought this isn't right but planted them anyway. Didn't see any growth so don't know what I did with the soil. I do have things springing to life. So you never know I may have random garlic bulbs growing in strange raised beds like the fruit cage. At least I know now what I had sown.
Hi Jason. I've heard of another way of killing mold on garlic, namely submerging them in Vodka. Not tried it myself but could be an alternative. Elaine 🌱
If you are going to wear those pegged shoes to punch holes into the black mulch, may I suggest you keep your balance with 2 walking sticks held in each hand to prevent falls or tripping?
Yes, we have the same transplanter, but unfortunately that does not work on garlic for several reasons, it makes too big and deep of a hole and it’s not really possible to get more than three rows across on one bed of plastic when we need four and the spacing is too far apart within the row. And the tractor moves much too quickly. Believe me, I wish it did work.
I just used a water wheel to get 4 rows on plastic like that. Get another wheel for your water wheel and do two passes per row. Stick your nephews on the back. I got folks planting on the back of the water wheel at .20 mph
We don’t like the water wheel for garlic for many reasons: the hole is too big and too deep and we would be fighting weeds all season long, our smallest spaced wheel is 12 inches and Joel plants them at 9 inches, even though I can move my water wheel into three different positions, which is what we do for Lettuce and spinach and beets but if we try to do four rows, there would hardly be any plastic left. And we don’t have a tractor that goes slow enough.
I planted 75 lbs today. Down from 150 lbs from last year. I am just tired of the amount of steps involved growing Garlic. Thumbs are sore tonight from pushing garlic into the ground all day hahah
@@MikeEdwards-pc4qf not sure how much you’re looking for, but my brother still has some left for sale but it’s a little on the smaller side, just depends on how much you’re looking for. But he sells it on his Wish well Farms Etsy site, which can also be accessed from our website www.wishwellfarms.com
Yeah I watch them from time to time...they don't plant garlic anymore, and we use the exact same transplanter as them for vegetables....doesn't work for garlic for many reasons
Good question. Actually we’ve worked together as a team since Joel was a young boy. Now that he has come back to the farm full time just 5 years ago, he has stepped into the role of grain farmer for my dad as his health is failing. We still work together most days but not as much as prior years since my dad is no longer working. Our operations are two separate entities as this point. I will be doing some videos on this topic over winter.
Garlic is not a lot of work, you are just making a ridiculous amount of work for yourselves. With a simple one row mechanical planter that can be used with minimal 3.5hp 2 twheel tractor, But I have it behind a compact can plant at least 4000 an hour. I only need to off set or center it to put down three of four rows between my track. There is no real advantage for hand planting what ever miniscule amount you percieve you have gained has cost you more in time, which is priceless.

Hmm, some interesting points here. I’ll definitely think about it more.
Great video , it’s fascinating to see how this works . Garlic is alot of work , we look forward to your videos , thank you.
Glad to hear that you enjoy them! Certainly a lot of intensive labor involved!
Here i am proud that i planted 150 cloves and complaining about my back the whole time. Great vid!
150 cloves is still a lot of work! Thank you!

I love the 'punch shoes'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah, I thought those were pretty awesome as well!
He needs a patent on them, would be good for the home garden
Thanks for the timely video.
Im planting my first garlic this year.
This helps alot!
@@gregholl5011 great to hear, best of luck to you on your growing endeavor!

That's tedious work!! Good job, Joel! Those shoes were so smart!! Thanks for another interesting video!! God bless y'all! 👍♥️🙏
His mechanical engineering mind is always coming up with unique and ingenious ideas on the farm. Thanks!
@wishwellfarms Our son is a design engineer for an oil company, so I understand "those" minds - brilliant & gifted!! 🌟👍
Holy moley
Thankyou to you and your brother for the information. Very good.
You are very welcome!
very interesting planting details.
Thank you, I appreciate that!
@@wishwellfarms I appreciate all the videos and information. Enjoy your mini vacation.
Hey Jason could talk about wideth between rows when you plant some of the field crop
Wideth of planter and tractor etc...
Joel, Great job! I learned alot! ❤😊
He certainly puts in a lot of work to grow garlic!
That’s a lot of onions to plant nice work 🇳🇿🙏🏼
Yes, it is a lot! It was garlic, not onions, but basically planted exactly the same way
Curious as to what variety of hardneck got planted...... great video BTW!!
I was wondering about that. Does he plant only one variety? I just grow some in my garden. I plant more than 3 varieties, but in a small raised bed. That is interesting about the nematodes.
He only currently grows one variety, German extra hardy hard neck
Thanks!
Thanks for an interesting video…clever
you bet!
Well the bulb boss made a cool tool to plant his garlic, after planting 20k pieces he becomes the garlic whisperer
Lol, love it!
No lay flat planting wagon? You guys work hard 👊
Yes, he has one but the tractor still moves too fast...need a hydrostatic or a geared down motor drive
@@wishwellfarms I did hear that later in the video.
Very good show you both. Makes me wonder why garlic is so cheap? I had no idea there was so much work envoled.
Thanks! Yes, very labor-intensive. I believe he sells the small ones for $1.50 each and the big ones for 250 each.

sounds a little more expensive 😁
@wishwellfarms you would have to test it first (for quality purposes) laugh

I live in Oxnard, CA where they grow strawberries using the exact same method. They use a steel punching machine.
Well, that's pretty cool!

Yes, that’s a great idea, he could’ve borrowed my backpacking trekking poles ha ha
Check out the veggie boys they have a two man ride on transplanter

I don't even care if the weeds get in my garlic areas anymore lol time I put in 1000 cloves I'm over it 😂
Yeah weeds are one of our biggest problems. 1000 is still a lot!
Is that Hard neck Garlic he is Planting..? Thats what I use in Northern Ohio
Yes it is
Labor intensive
Very!
When planting garlic bulb head, from scapes, do u just leave it in the ground till year 4 ,then harvest?
I planted 75 lbs today. Down from 150 lbs from last year. I am just tired of the amount of steps involved growing Garlic. Thumbs are sore tonight from pushing garlic into the ground all day hahah
I know he saves his bulbs to replant where would be a good place to buy bulb starts?
Are you wanting to buy bulbs that have already already been started in pots or cells or just raw bulbs for you to plant yourself?
Ready to plant in plastic mulch in the field

try a pvc pipe that just snugs into the plastic.

The top Garlic I call nuclear we plant those and leave them in for 3 years

I see a big tractor. This is not by hand.
The tractor pokes the holes everything is planted by hand
Why you are not hiring some foreign workers for this type of tedious jobs?
