@@autofetishdetail I believe it. However this video explains why, when we "try" to treat our leather it just ends up rather slippery because as you explained the conditioner is not being absorbed by the leather its just being smeared on the coating

@@dannyturner7967 Bingo!! With that said, there are a few leather conditioners that do "absorb" into that clear coating rather than just remain sitting on top creating a new problem. I accept that just like paint colors or the endless formulations of clear coat on paint used by manufacturers, that the same holds true for the clear coats used on leathers. Think about the endless things in life you buy, use, eat, etc...they truly are uniquely made from different chemicals, ingredients, sources, etc. Let me take something from my own life; hamburger meat. I eat nothing but grass fed hamburger meat as one of my regular foods. My ideal choice would be organic, grass fed and finished beef. I can buy this from various places from various manufacturers. But each version will taste differently based on how the manufacturer "processes" this beef: from where they source the raw meat, to how it is ground up (what true percentage of lean meat versus fat and connective tissue do they use, what type of "salt" do they add, how much salt, any other trace seasonings, etc.) And yet, it's all just called ground beef. This holds true for everything in life, including the leather used in cars. Which then leads to your remark: the type of clear coating used on the leather a manufacturer uses to build their cars with. I accept that some of this clear coating has the ability to absorb certain types of chemicals like most any other type of material. Think of vinyl plastic components inside a car, we still add a dressing to these components to enhance the look, and to "condition" them. Which a person could then say, "if this is true, then I SHOULD use a leather condition." Which I would say, "Sure, but you don't need a separate leather conditioner to do it because it's not touching the leather, it is only touching the clear coating which then means you can default to a traditional dressing and buy once less product in life." I hope this adds additional understanding for you. What I can tell you is that the leather in the cars I have owned over the years, I never used a conditioner on them: I simply always kept them clean on the regular. And the leather held up and looked great year after year for as long as I kept the car. I have done this with all my cars. Which means in my world that using any type of conditioner on the leather was purely for visual enhancement if I wanted to create some shine for example.

Keep it clean on the regular. Past that; you can apply any dressing or conditioner you want if you are looking for some shine. Just know that some conditioners will literally just "sit" on top and create an unwanted residue -this is a case by case situation due to both the exact type of coated leather and the type of conditioner you attempt to apply.

As a rule I would say manufacturers use less and less of it. And to clarify, I am referring to how much of a seat for example is constructed with leather versus vinyl look-like-leather material. There are endless types of leather and endless ways in which leather is manufactured. Most leather in cars up to the $150K range is what is called corrected grain leather -which is also of course coated. the leather grain is literally "stamped" with a grain/texture pattern so it is completely uniform in appearance, which then means that any vinyl leather-like material can look and feel exactly like the real leather. This simply means that to an untrained eye, a car owner would think the whole seat is made of real leather versus only partial real leather and mostly vinyl leather-like material. Once you get into cars with price tags at $150k+ then you get really nice leather that does not use corrected grain, but they also select leathers that are naturally superior with little to no natural blemishes in the grain surface itself, and then there are endless tanning, dying, and other processes they can do before finally coating it with the clear coating. It's a subject that takes you down a very deep worm hole when you begin to study the subject; albeit a very interesting subject. Hope this adds a little clarity for you.
