  • Wrexham Town Council won through to the 'international stage' for their bid for World Heritage Site status for the aquaduct at Pontcysllte using See3D's visualisation of how Thomas Telford might have constructed the structure. Our animation has now been updated and rendered in full 1080p HD for inclusion in a BBC documentary series, Hidden Histories, describing the work of RCAHMW.

As far as i can recall, the side sections of the arches are solid castings, and not the same open frames as the the two inner arch sections, with plates added, as shewn in this animation.
When an arch was replaced after cracks were found, one of the inner arch frames were erected at the Canal Museum at Stoke Bruerne, Northamptonshire. (Without the crossmembers, so the joints aren't quite right.)
Some other parts, including (as i recall) a complete cross member, a broken cross member, and some outer arch sections found their way to the Waterways Museum (was The Boat Museum) at Ellesmere Port, Cheshire.

Thanks for this superb upload; so very worthwhile. Please do one on Thomas Telford's other masterpiece, the Menai Bridge. How did my TH-cam feed know that just two days ago I started to read a book all about Thomas Telford? This animation fits perfectly with what I've been reading.

I think generally, I seem to remember, they sent the horses down to the Bont bridge beneath the Aqueduct and back up to meet the boats on the other side, hauling the boats by hand over the Aqueduct itself.
