Love your videos! My husband and I used to work in a modern underground mine here in Australia … it was at least 800 metres deep when we worked there but it is at least 1 km now. I was a cleaner and generally worked at the 420 metre level cleaning crib (lunch) rooms, offices, control rooms and toilets. My husband would work down the bottom where it was hot as hell doing hard yakka that was ad hoc most days really … cleaning rocks off rail lines, cleaning rocks off conveyer belts and many other jobs. The mine was copper, uranium, gold and silver. It is in Outback South Australia near the town of Roxby Downs. The name of the mine is Olympic Dam Mine. The underground roads are about 5 m wide x 5 m tall for dump trucks and other plant machinery plus mine vehicles to run around in. The mine has a cage (lift) to take workers to different levels of the mine. Hope that was of interest.
Yes it was of interest. My brother used to be a mine engineer in a copper mine in Zambia. Sadly I never managed to visit him there but he used to tell some hair raising stories of what it was like. 👍

great vlog seeing the pit ponies reminded of someone i used to work with he was a bevan boy during the war and he had to look after the ponies obviously being alongside them for such long periods had an effect on him and often with out realising he was doing it he would shake his head from side to side and make the noise a pony would make as it moved its bit inside its mouth ,the museum seems a fitting tribute to a way of life that we depended on so much

The section covering your visit to the National Coal Mining Museum brought back mostly happy memories of my time working underground in one of the nearby coal mines as an Electrician. You are spot on with your comments about the banter that went on in the showers and clean/dirty lockers area too! Most not repeatable on a ‘family’ channel tho. 😊

I've lived in mining villages and gone to school with miners kids and you couldn't meet a nicer group of people.Family were very important and the devastation caused by the then incumbent was sickening.(Getting off my high horse now). That was a very interesting video. I was brought up in a mining village but will save you from another of my trips down memory lane! We used to own a narrowboat and kept it on the Grand Union canal just past Napton Junction. I think you would enjoy a holiday on the canals but at 2 or 3 miles an hour progress is slow. Mind mooring up in an isolated spot is beautiful and I loved the boat. I love our van too. Thanks for sharing another great video.
Our trip on the Caledonian Canal scared us to death when we got caught in a storm on Loch Lochy. I wish I had filmed it but it was before GoPro’s existed 😁👍

Wow Leeds seems to have gone 'all posh' since I was a student there in the 80's - but I always loved those arcades and the market. Talking of which, we had a student trip down Grimethorpe colliery (one of the deepest in the country) - the only thing was it was during the miners strike, and the protesters thought we were 'scabs' so our bus got attacked. It was an absolutely terrifying experience for us greenhorn students - but really brought home just how elevated tensions had become (rather than what you read in the press). Fortunately nobody got hurt, and after that going underground all the way to the coal face was far less scary. But kudos to the miners, as the confined space and conditions brought home just how tough a job it was for them. I just remember how sad those times were, with so many communities devastated...😔 Anyway thanks for a trip down memory lane, and I am please to hear you got a new heater 👍

Thank you so much excellent video, have you been to big pit in south Wales , it’s similar and worth a visit .I got caught too with my mobile and I sought of knew as I’m a sparky and worked on flame proof equipment . It was all free as most museums are in Wales , well they were when we went . You’re not that far from Aberfan when at big pit , but it’s pretty narrow around that area but worth a pilgrimage. My dad worked in the mine , and there were two which crossed one above the other out in the estuary ,so they closed my dad’s mine and knocked them into one ,and took the coal out the other . Can’t imagine working in a mine underneath another under an estuary 😟🤷♂️ your right there was great camaraderie like you 2 really. well done both good luck 👍👍👍🏴🏴🇬🇧🇨🇦🦢
You two are always triggering memories for me ,,,,,the picture of your dinner in the pot reminded me that on one of our first camping trips with the boys I made a very similar meal except I used hamburger and added snowpeas and celery, I served it over rice and our youngest (then about 6) loved it , I loved the easy prep and he loved the taste . A couple months later ,at home after a rather hectic week I slumped down into a chair and told all I had no idea what was for supper as I was exhausted . Toby chimed in and suggested I make that ""lazy little meat"",,,I hadn't a clue what he was talking about , so on he went on about the camping meal i had made when I was LAZY and that it had that LITTLE MEAT in it.....and that affectionately became the moniker for this much loved meal . It is still a go to meal but not as frequently so thanks for sharing and triggering a funny memory ! Stay safe !!

Toby was struck by a car at 12 , many broken widgets and a traumatic brain injury , then at 20 his first ever ride on a dirt bike landed him in hospital again with multiple life threatening injuries including another traumatic brain injury bleed that left him learning to walk , talk and feed himself again ,,,,during the monitoring of this they found he had a congenital heart defect for which he had heart surgery ,,,,miraculously through faith , prayer and many blessings he has made a complete recovery ,,,, works full time , drives a hot red standard Mustang and still loves Lazy Little Meat.....and I'm a thankful mom ! Oh I love that museum and I bet you experienced real darkness whilst down there. I drive those roads regularly and not that you were aware but after you had been through middlestown and on to the road towards pugneys you drove passed another colliery site, that colliery was actually linked by tunnels to the museum once upon a time and other collieries too. The tunnels were extensive and of course one of the reasons for subsidence in the area. Until recently I worked with a gentleman that took a lot of the photos on display at the museum. We are just going through 40th anniversary’s of some of the darkest moments of the minors strike. I wish I had known you were in the area I would’ve pointed you in the direction of some beautiful and interesting places to visit.
Very relaxed video would you believe it we went to wales and visited the big pit coal mine as well. They are the only two museum mines in the UK so we have been told. That pulled pork chips and coleslaw looked lovely. Glad you got the heater fixed. Stay safe guys keep on trucking see you again soon

Three OMG moments there. Number 1 Penistone is where our van was built and that spot is exactly where Claud stays the night when she needs any after sales service the next morning. Number 2 we have the exact same conversation about once a week - Claud, “do you fancy living in a narrow boat?” Me, “no.” End of conversation. Number 3 watching you chilling in the van and we suddenly thought, blimey, we’ve been in that van. Made us feel famous lol.

Great spots and interesting activities. Loved the Coal Mining Museum, though cannot but feel sad at what happened in the mid 1980s strike driven by Margaret Thatchers Govt. Used to have a friend who was a policeman based at Portman Square in London, that was despised by many and his friends until he left the force later. The emotive feelings still there are visible in so many places (like the highland clearances, some still have bitter reactions & memories today). Looked like there was a lot of still useable and expensive gear at the Museum. Our current govt are looking to reopen some coal mines and also create new ones, as we currently import coal from Indonesia, that seems false economy when you have unlimited coal at home!! Great you have a new heater, fingers crossed it works!! Great and tasty catering options, you have shown this week. So last episode you were driving around fairly near where I live (Holmfirth), and this one you started driving around where I was born - (Stockport), before staying a couple of miles from my house in Penistone. 😂 There are much better places to stay round here than that scruffy alleyway though! I always feel so sorry for those poor pit ponies,who once lowered into the mine never came back up again,never to feel the wind and sun on their faces,never to graze or canter about,must have been torture for them. Poor things.
Life was very hard for every living thing down in those mines. We were told about the little kids who would sit in total darkness all day operating the hatch to an air vent.
Quick point of order if I may, John Lewis have stopped selling cameras instore, but you can order online for next day delivery to your chosen store or to many other shops and supermarkets. I work in a John Lewis and weeks would go by between camera sales, blame mobile phones :-)
I was told this by a member of staff in the store. The whole point of John Lewis is it was one of the few remaining places other than specialist stores (very rare now) where you used to be able to pick up and feel the cameras before purchase. I don’t blame the store as I am very aware that mobile phones have almost killed the camera market. Truth is though camera manufacturers have killed themselves by constantly producing kit that is pretty useless for the travel vlogger. 👍

Very interesting Ken and Carol, we’re you in the job at the time of the miners strike? I was and remember being at the big K kellingley when there was a big to do between us, Thatchers boot boys and the striking miners, that day started very peacefully but a huge number of miners eventually turned up and a lot of pushing and shoving started. A sergeant in front of me got shoved back and broke both legs and it turned into quite a memorable day. Sadly kellingley closed not too long afterwards. Bitterness still exists nearly 40 years later between strikers families, police and those that chose to work. Great videos, keep them up, very enjoyable.
I did one tour in Kent which was pretty uneventful to be honest. Soon after that I transferred into CID at Brighton. It was a terrible time for many and there was wrong doing on both sides of the fence. I wish we still had the steel, ships and coal though. Relying on other parts of the world is crazy.
Those diesel heaters are a bit troublesome. People living in their vans, here in Canada, dread problems with them. Because if they stop working in winter, they are in trouble. They have to keep a spare and learn how to service them.
I can understand why. At the same time we were having issues we were watching another channel Adz Adventures having the same issues. He was in Norway in very cold weather and was lucky his didn’t finally lock him out 👍
Ooh, I had bookmarked the coal mining museum as a maybe to visit, but didn't go in the end. I spotted the wheelchairs in the back of the shot when you went into the underground bit. Were they for people with electric chairs to transfer into for underground or was that bit not really wheelchair accessible. I'd assume not but curious about those wheelchairs they had. 😄 Looks like the rest of it'd be well worth a visit another time though, thank you for sharing!
They do allow wheelchair users to go on the underground tour which is accessed via a cage lift. There is information on their website or you can give them a ring if you have any questions. Well worth a visit 🙂👍
We were the first in 1979 for Thatcher and McGreggor to to take on in the Steel Industry. I felt the perceived injustice at the time, we were on strike for 3 months, Thatcher beat us and drove us back to work. She took on the miners in 1984, they were a tougher nut to crack but she did after 13 months. Prior to the strike, unlike whenTed Heath took the miners union on and failed. Thatcher prepared for the strike by over producing coal, to be stocked at every place coal could be stored. The miners went on strike and although it was a long tough battle, Thatcher won. As I said at that time as a young Steelworker, I felt the injustice. I was totally wrong though and Thatcher was right. The unions were running and controlling the whole country with their power and no decisions could be made by managers or for that matter the Government, without asking the unions first. There was demand after demand, for wanting more and more money for doing less and less work. The UK was the sick uncompetitive man of Europe. It had to be stopped and Thatcher did exactly that. We need a strong leader now, just like her but we have flim flam college educated people, who know nothing of real life and I fear for our future. The other thing is very nearly all UK coal is deep mined and very expensive to extract. Australian coal is open cast and very cheap, even after bringing it 1/2 way around the world and was obviously preferred by business, which the Unions wouldn't allow. Overall Thatcher had absolutely no choice but to take on the miners and use every tool at her disposal to do it. I hope we never see the likes of Scargill and Red Robbo ever again. For an example, when I started work, there were 32000 people employed on South Teesside Works, when I finished there in 2010 there were roughly 3000 directly employed. We produced more steel with those 3000 post privatisation and without union control, than we did with the 32000 in 1975. Technology obviously improved but just look at the productivity in 2010 without union control. Steel as well as coal has obviously severely contracted because of competition and lately the effect of decarbonisation with the proposed use of scrap melt from arc furnaces instead of virgin iron from blast furnaces but what do they do when the scrap runs out or the price goes through the roof with scarcity ? When you were at the museum, I hope you didn't tell them you used to be a policeman after the battle of Orgreave lol.
I was not at Orgreave but like most officers back then I was sent but not up North. I only did one tour before I moved into CID. I think your account of what was happening at that time is correct. I still wish we had a coal and steel industry now though.

Did hire a narrowboat with some friends ten years ago. One of my best holidays! We hired it at Stoke and was out for a week on the canals.

That was a very interesting video. I was brought up in a mining village but will save you from another of my trips down memory lane! We used to own a narrowboat and kept it on the Grand Union canal just past Napton Junction. I think you would enjoy a holiday on the canals but at 2 or 3 miles an hour progress is slow. Mind mooring up in an isolated spot is beautiful and I loved the boat. I love our van too. Thanks for sharing another great video.
Our trip on the Caledonian Canal scared us to death when we got caught in a storm on Loch Lochy. I wish I had filmed it but it was before GoPro’s existed 😁👍

Wow Leeds seems to have gone 'all posh' since I was a student there in the 80's - but I always loved those arcades and the market.
Talking of which, we had a student trip down Grimethorpe colliery (one of the deepest in the country) - the only thing was it was during the miners strike, and the protesters thought we were 'scabs' so our bus got attacked. It was an absolutely terrifying experience for us greenhorn students - but really brought home just how elevated tensions had become (rather than what you read in the press). Fortunately nobody got hurt, and after that going underground all the way to the coal face was far less scary. But kudos to the miners, as the confined space and conditions brought home just how tough a job it was for them.
I just remember how sad those times were, with so many communities devastated...😔

Thank you so much excellent video, have you been to big pit in south Wales , it’s similar and worth a visit .I got caught too with my mobile and I sought of knew as I’m a sparky and worked on flame proof equipment . It was all free as most museums are in Wales , well they were when we went . You’re not that far from Aberfan when at big pit , but it’s pretty narrow around that area but worth a pilgrimage. My dad worked in the mine , and there were two which crossed one above the other out in the estuary ,so they closed my dad’s mine and knocked them into one ,and took the coal out the other . Can’t imagine working in a mine underneath another under an estuary 😟🤷♂️ your right there was great camaraderie like you 2 really. well done both good luck 👍👍👍🏴🏴🇬🇧🇨🇦🦢

You two are always triggering memories for me ,,,,,the picture of your dinner in the pot reminded me that on one of our first camping trips with the boys I made a very similar meal except I used hamburger and added snowpeas and celery, I served it over rice and our youngest (then about 6) loved it , I loved the easy prep and he loved the taste . A couple months later ,at home after a rather hectic week I slumped down into a chair and told all I had no idea what was for supper as I was exhausted . Toby chimed in and suggested I make that ""lazy little meat"",,,I hadn't a clue what he was talking about , so on he went on about the camping meal i had made when I was LAZY and that it had that LITTLE MEAT in it.....and that affectionately became the moniker for this much loved meal . It is still a go to meal but not as frequently so thanks for sharing and triggering a funny memory ! Stay safe !!

Toby was struck by a car at 12 , many broken widgets and a traumatic brain injury , then at 20 his first ever ride on a dirt bike landed him in hospital again with multiple life threatening injuries including another traumatic brain injury bleed that left him learning to walk , talk and feed himself again ,,,,during the monitoring of this they found he had a congenital heart defect for which he had heart surgery ,,,,miraculously through faith , prayer and many blessings he has made a complete recovery ,,,, works full time , drives a hot red standard Mustang and still loves Lazy Little Meat.....and I'm a thankful mom ! Oh I love that museum and I bet you experienced real darkness whilst down there. I drive those roads regularly and not that you were aware but after you had been through middlestown and on to the road towards pugneys you drove passed another colliery site, that colliery was actually linked by tunnels to the museum once upon a time and other collieries too. The tunnels were extensive and of course one of the reasons for subsidence in the area. Until recently I worked with a gentleman that took a lot of the photos on display at the museum. We are just going through 40th anniversary’s of some of the darkest moments of the minors strike.
I wish I had known you were in the area I would’ve pointed you in the direction of some beautiful and interesting places to visit.

Very relaxed video would you believe it we went to wales and visited the big pit coal mine as well. They are the only two museum mines in the UK so we have been told. That pulled pork chips and coleslaw looked lovely. Glad you got the heater fixed. Stay safe guys keep on trucking see you again soon

Three OMG moments there. Number 1 Penistone is where our van was built and that spot is exactly where Claud stays the night when she needs any after sales service the next morning. Number 2 we have the exact same conversation about once a week - Claud, “do you fancy living in a narrow boat?” Me, “no.” End of conversation. Number 3 watching you chilling in the van and we suddenly thought, blimey, we’ve been in that van. Made us feel famous lol.

Great spots and interesting activities. Loved the Coal Mining Museum, though cannot but feel sad at what happened in the mid 1980s strike driven by Margaret Thatchers Govt. Used to have a friend who was a policeman based at Portman Square in London, that was despised by many and his friends until he left the force later. The emotive feelings still there are visible in so many places (like the highland clearances, some still have bitter reactions & memories today). Looked like there was a lot of still useable and expensive gear at the Museum. Our current govt are looking to reopen some coal mines and also create new ones, as we currently import coal from Indonesia, that seems false economy when you have unlimited coal at home!! Great you have a new heater, fingers crossed it works!! Great and tasty catering options, you have shown this week. So last episode you were driving around fairly near where I live (Holmfirth), and this one you started driving around where I was born - (Stockport), before staying a couple of miles from my house in Penistone. 😂 There are much better places to stay round here than that scruffy alleyway though!

I always feel so sorry for those poor pit ponies,who once lowered into the mine never came back up again,never to feel the wind and sun on their faces,never to graze or canter about,must have been torture for them. Poor things.
Life was very hard for every living thing down in those mines. We were told about the little kids who would sit in total darkness all day operating the hatch to an air vent.
Quick point of order if I may, John Lewis have stopped selling cameras instore, but you can order online for next day delivery to your chosen store or to many other shops and supermarkets. I work in a John Lewis and weeks would go by between camera sales, blame mobile phones :-)
I was told this by a member of staff in the store. The whole point of John Lewis is it was one of the few remaining places other than specialist stores (very rare now) where you used to be able to pick up and feel the cameras before purchase. I don’t blame the store as I am very aware that mobile phones have almost killed the camera market. Truth is though camera manufacturers have killed themselves by constantly producing kit that is pretty useless for the travel vlogger. 👍

Very interesting Ken and Carol, we’re you in the job at the time of the miners strike? I was and remember being at the big K kellingley when there was a big to do between us, Thatchers boot boys and the striking miners, that day started very peacefully but a huge number of miners eventually turned up and a lot of pushing and shoving started. A sergeant in front of me got shoved back and broke both legs and it turned into quite a memorable day. Sadly kellingley closed not too long afterwards. Bitterness still exists nearly 40 years later between strikers families, police and those that chose to work. Great videos, keep them up, very enjoyable.
I did one tour in Kent which was pretty uneventful to be honest. Soon after that I transferred into CID at Brighton. It was a terrible time for many and there was wrong doing on both sides of the fence. I wish we still had the steel, ships and coal though. Relying on other parts of the world is crazy.

Those diesel heaters are a bit troublesome. People living in their vans, here in Canada, dread problems with them. Because if they stop working in winter, they are in trouble. They have to keep a spare and learn how to service them.
I can understand why. At the same time we were having issues we were watching another channel Adz Adventures having the same issues. He was in Norway in very cold weather and was lucky his didn’t finally lock him out 👍
Ooh, I had bookmarked the coal mining museum as a maybe to visit, but didn't go in the end. I spotted the wheelchairs in the back of the shot when you went into the underground bit. Were they for people with electric chairs to transfer into for underground or was that bit not really wheelchair accessible. I'd assume not but curious about those wheelchairs they had. 😄

They do allow wheelchair users to go on the underground tour which is accessed via a cage lift. There is information on their website or you can give them a ring if you have any questions. Well worth a visit 🙂👍

We were the first in 1979 for Thatcher and McGreggor to to take on in the Steel Industry. I felt the perceived injustice at the time, we were on strike for 3 months, Thatcher beat us and drove us back to work. She took on the miners in 1984, they were a tougher nut to crack but she did after 13 months. Prior to the strike, unlike whenTed Heath took the miners union on and failed. Thatcher prepared for the strike by over producing coal, to be stocked at every place coal could be stored. The miners went on strike and although it was a long tough battle, Thatcher won. As I said at that time as a young Steelworker, I felt the injustice. I was totally wrong though and Thatcher was right. The unions were running and controlling the whole country with their power and no decisions could be made by managers or for that matter the Government, without asking the unions first. There was demand after demand, for wanting more and more money for doing less and less work. The UK was the sick uncompetitive man of Europe. It had to be stopped and Thatcher did exactly that. We need a strong leader now, just like her but we have flim flam college educated people, who know nothing of real life and I fear for our future. The other thing is very nearly all UK coal is deep mined and very expensive to extract. Australian coal is open cast and very cheap, even after bringing it 1/2 way around the world and was obviously preferred by business, which the Unions wouldn't allow. Overall Thatcher had absolutely no choice but to take on the miners and use every tool at her disposal to do it. I hope we never see the likes of Scargill and Red Robbo ever again. For an example, when I started work, there were 32000 people employed on South Teesside Works, when I finished there in 2010 there were roughly 3000 directly employed. We produced more steel with those 3000 post privatisation and without union control, than we did with the 32000 in 1975. Technology obviously improved but just look at the productivity in 2010 without union control. Steel as well as coal has obviously severely contracted because of competition and lately the effect of decarbonisation with the proposed use of scrap melt from arc furnaces instead of virgin iron from blast furnaces but what do they do when the scrap runs out or the price goes through the roof with scarcity ? When you were at the museum, I hope you didn't tell them you used to be a policeman after the battle of Orgreave lol.
I was not at Orgreave but like most officers back then I was sent but not up North. I only did one tour before I moved into CID. I think your account of what was happening at that time is correct. I still wish we had a coal and steel industry now though.
