    I mentioned this in the Pelagos Part 1 review but not a deciding factor in choosing between the 2 watches.... The lug width! 21 on the P39 and 20 on the BB58! If you love your strap changes this could be important? Thanks for watching all!!!

    • @finenavaljewelry5798
      @finenavaljewelry5798 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I think P39 should only be worn on the supplied bracelet and strap, OR, Marine Nationale parachute strap by NDC which comes in 21mm. So problem solved.

      I would have a hard time not using the 39 Ti bracelet, so it is ok for me.

      They should have included a removal tool for the bracelet, or quick release pins considering that it comes with a rubber strap in the box. That's my biggest criticism.

    Love this comparison show MWC!
    Both are sadly out of my price range but I’d go for the Pelagos 39 if I had the money in my watch piggy bank. Titanium doesn’t do anything for me but I love the monochrome colourway of the Pelagos which is only interrupted by that awesome red line of text and I’ve never really been a fan of the gilt hand and indeces which are a real signature of the Black Bay.
    Either would make a fantastic addition to any collection though!

      Have you thought about the Citizen Challenge diver it's a fifth of the price of the Pelagos 39?
      I sold my Tudor Black Bay 58 as in my opinion the quality wasn't good enough for the price and the brand is over-rated, as it's usually falsely assumed to be a true manufacturer. The value for me didn't stack up, as I've paid more and got more and paid less and got more.
      After I shifted the BB58, I bought a couple of Sinns and the Citizen Challenge diver. I don't feel any urge to pursue the Pelagos 39, my Citizen keeps better time than the BB58 did, it's made of titanium and as far as everyone around me is concerned they're both just retro diver's watches.

    Walked into an AD for my birthday in 2020, walked out with a BB58 and it's still my favorite watch. Only two years in and it's been with me to so many weddings and major events. Classy enough for a suit and just casual enough for a t-shirt and jeans 👍

    Really loved the video. I own the BB58 Black and it's one of my favorite watches. I agree with you that the BB58 and Palgos 39 are different enough to own both. I'll have to show this video to my wife to help her understand why I NEED both. Thanks for another great video.

    Nice comparison. I wish diver extensions were an optional add-on. Many clasps are made worse when a useless extension is awkwardly added to them. Tudor, Sinn, Seiko, etc...

      Totally agree. Clasp size is the biggest annoyance to me (small wrist) as you have to play with the number of links on each side to center the clasp on the below side of the wrist. Additionally, as it is big, the centering of the clasp on the wrist overpowers the centering of the watch on the otherside and this can push the case to the side.

    • @brianmsahin
      @brianmsahin 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Completely agree Rob, and as someone who does a bit of diving and uses a watch as a backup to the D. C., I and just about anyone I've ever dived with tend to swap the bracelet for a rubber strap. Much easier than trying to fiddle around with divers extensions that often fail to fit exactly as needed over the suit anyway. I would always choose no extension. 👍

    Fantastic comparison. Both watches look fantastic and it would be tough for me to choose without seeing both in person. I do not own any high end watches at this time but if I did Tudor is on the top of my list. I think my Seiko’s, Citizens, G-shocks, and Hamilton would not get much love if I purchased a Tudor. The black bay 58 blue dial has had my attention for a while. Your video production is top notch. Cheers!

    I think you’re right, I’d go with the BB58 also because of its retro style and the lovely warm gold lettering on the dial. The Pelagos as wonderful as it is is just too close to a Submariner and at its price point I’d be looking at a Breitling Superocean as well, both of which aren’t like a 58. Great show as always, cheers MWC :-)

    Totally agree! I much prefer the BB58 look. The clasp, the look and weight of steel, the dial and bezel, the lume, etc. Everything I prefer on the 58. The Pelagos is technically a better watch and the price shows that. But I’m design first so it’s the 58 for me. You can find them lightly used for under $3000 now. The Pelagos is hard to find new and over retail used.

    • @finenavaljewelry5798
      @finenavaljewelry5798 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The lesson with any new Tudor is wait 2 years and buy new at retail or slightly under, or preowned under retail. I remember when BB58 Blue came out, it was like gold. Now you can walk into pretty much any AD and they have them in stock on the bracelet.

    Another top video Russel. Some of my stubby thoughts (a couple of escaped neurons hit each other and formed a thought). If you have a BB58, keep it, they are brilliant. If you don't have either then whichever one you get you'll be pondering that you got the wrong one and may well consider saving up for the other, although I would not sell one to get the other or you'd be back to the start of the sentence. As you mention both are different enough to live in the same collection, the difficulty here is which one joins the collection first. At risk of my brain collapsing in on itself another thought just registered. It might be worth adding the older bigger Pelagos into the mix. I have the LHD that echoes older times but could that live with a 39 as well? They are quite different in appearance and wear. Less so the RHD.

    • @THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR
      @THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Does that long slab like clasp stop the watch from rolling around the wrist by any chance? I tried both on. I fell in love with the black bay black. I am quite tall and have a 7.7" wrist. I tried on the Pelagos and my immediate reaction was this would look good with a lab coat, looking at it, is very clinical looking and cold, nothing warm and fuzzy like you say. I love your reviews. You have fun, but It's all about the watch and not egocentric as many reviews/reviewers are. It is about how the watch makes you feel as well as how close to perfection it is with regard to build. Looks and personality :) You are very good at describing both.

    One of things that spoil the BB58 for me is the protruding crown, it looks like the stem is too long & they had to put a washer behind it. Crown guards win. The non edged hour markers on the Pelagos aren’t as good as the BB’s. Aluminium vs Ceramic insert & one dot of lume on the BB, Pelagos wins. Better clasp size BB, better functioning clasp Pelagos. There’s always something to pick at. Good review!

    Hi Russell. You make some excellent points here. I'm impressed with P39 but there's also something a little cold about it too, clinical even, and I don't feel that about my BB58. Sure there are some advantages in the P39 but none that warrant ditching the BB58 for it for now. Great video. I agree with everything you’ve said here. I own both watches and both are amazing. I feel the P39 is a better every day watch, for casual wear. I always felt the BB58 looked a bit too dressy at times, but I think the BB58 is the more versatile of the two watches. You can wear it casual, but you can also dress it up in a more formal setting.
    One of the major improvements for me is the T-fit clasp. My P39 fits the wrist so well, and I could never get the BB58 to fit perfectly.
    The biggest indicator of which watch is right for me is how much wrist time they are getting. At the moment it is all P39. This might be due to the P39 being newer, but I’ve hardly had my BB58 on since buying the P39.

    Fully agree. These are two quite different watches, serving different corners of the market.
    I for one like the 58 (which I own) better, precisely because it has a vintage Submariner feel to it. And, not being a diver, I don’t really care about diver’s extension or luminous bezel insert.

    I have the BB58 gilt and love it. I immediately bought a Vanguard black rubber strap and a NATO strap for it. What I would do next is get a Tudor Ranger as a field watch, put the Ranger bracelet on the BB58 (has the T-fit clasp and no fake rivets) and wear the Ranger on a NATO strap. That fixes everything!

    I’m with you Russell: I have the BB58 but want the Pelagos 39. It’s a perfect diver. Titanium bracelets, as I learned from the Titanium Squares are light and really comfortable.

      It’s an interesting point my friend. I own the OG and the blue 58. I did not buy them thinking about the sell value. I would say right now as there maybe less of them in the world the Pelagos 39 may hold better value but titanium maybe a trend than isn’t enjoyed one day????

      @@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR this will be my first and probably only reasonable priced watch so it doesn't really matter. But the way my brain works seeing it dropping will still effect me. I'm leaning towards the Pelagos because of the clean black and white. If I could find a black bay in those colours I would get that. The ranger is a outside shout for me. I'm going to try them on next week. Annoyingly the only one that's lhd is the 42mm pelagos. Luckily I'm ambidextrous even though my left hand is much stronger. So I mite just have to suck it up and wear on my left hand. Thanks for the reply

  • @emaeder18

    Both are a good strategy :) The 58 has a dressy Diver, and the Pelagos has a kick-ass "get out of my way" kind of watch

    I hope they make the pelagos in steel at some point.

  • @HydrogenAlpha

    Love the video. Am currently on a list for a pelagos 39 rather than the BB58 because I love the resilience of a ceramic bezel.
    The thing is, you've had your 58 for 3 years, and you describe yourself as clumsy, and there wasn't a mark on the aluminium bezel in this video.
    BB58 owners, is the aluminium bezel really that robust and scratch resistant?

    • @rssbrry
      @rssbrry 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would think that the top-hat crystal would generally make contact before the bezel, in this case. I don't own one though, so that's just speculation. Or maybe he's just not as clumsy as he lets on.

    I think the square markers on the pelagos look much better with the snowflake hand than circular markers. The 58 has a clash of geometric shapes in my opinion

    Great comparison. Yep, the specs on the Pelagos, ruggedness, they're gonna suit me better. Still, I couldn't see how the BB58 would get a look in at first, but now I understand it's contrasting desirability.

    Great video as always. I'm a big fan. Just a little complain. It's not only you. This goes to a lot of watch reviewers on YT. The word Pelagos is pronounced on the 'e'. It's pE-lagos. Also the 'e' is kinda soft. Trust me, I'm Greek. I also have a non watch related question for you. Tsitsipas or Djokovic?
