On the topic of making art for yourself first and not with an audience in mind: I find that the more honest you are with your expeession, the more it resonates with people. If you create what you THINK people want, you end up with a watered down, middle of the road kind of thing that could half resonate with a lot of people, but doesn't end up really connecting with anyone deep down.
"I'm saying community a lot." Well, yeah. Community is the whole point. I was obsessed with punk rock and zines when I was in high school eleventy-billion years ago and I'm so glad to see you here telling people to make something that is so inherently not digital! There's a reason perzines still exist and personal blogs mostly don't. It's because in a zine you can see the hand of the maker. It's imperfect and weird and real- you don't get that online. I don't know how, but the internet and in particular the specific formats of social media compress everyone down to the lowest common denominator and then you can"t tell anyone apart.
i love your ideas, and i love that you took a second to speak up for Palestine-- this is the first video of yours i watched and you got a subscribe for that for sure. thank you thank you thank you
Finding Zines in rural Japan is a bit of a challenge, so online zines are really great for me. I know there are some festivals, but language barriers are an issue, but I guess I am working my way through those as well 😂 I also use Zine making in my lessons (language classes) and while it is a bit more guided and specific, it is a great way to introduce zines to younger people. And lastly I technically wrote a zine…but I am stuck with the spell check😅 so let‘s see when this one gets finished.
For step 4, the mindset I have when making zines is: create a TH-cam video-like situation in text. What colors do I associate with the mood? What's engaging without overstimulating the visual work? Also... Thank you for these videos. I'm working on my first zine about video games because of them. (Slow but steady process, and I'm enjoying it a LOT)
Your process is neat and so intuitive. I like how you ask yourself those questions so you can be more intentional with your work, thank you for sharing this 🙏🏽 Let me know how your video game Zine goes!! Happy international zine month 🫡

Hi. Thank you for the video. I actually just started making zines in June, as I was looking for a way to give my grade six students something to help them remember poetic devices and ended up making a one page mini-zine which was fun to make. I made some more just for me and am kind of obsessed. I worried about being a 49 year old making this but, you’re right, it is for me, no one else, necessarily. I am looking at making a little zine library in my classroom next year and maybe using them as a way for kids to show their learning on topics and such.

The reason I adore your channel is because it's so real! It's challenge. I'm trying to step into putting out my own zines. I'm also heavy into collage so it's perfect and not having to wait 6-12 months for something I wrote to come out.

Hi Bre, I've watched a few of your vids, and have decided to take the plunge. I am about 75% done with my third perZine. The experience is quickly becoming a new passion, for me. So far, I've done two 8 x 5.5 sixteen page zines with poetry and art; and an eight page mini-zine of Haiku. As an art-hobbyist, zines are a perfect outlet, and complement for my artistry.
