This is so cool! I remember watching these games after school on WOR-TV channel 9 in NY. Back then they actually broadcast the games on NBC and the Mets local channel.
This is amazing and rare! I watched that game from home and was so worried that the Mets would lose by forfeit. But when a bunch of popular Mets, led by Willie Mays, went out to plead with the fans not to dump debris on the field, the fans cooperated and we went on to win. Great memories!
It came very close to being forfeited.....I remember the NBC cameras panning into the stands to focus on NL President Chub Feeney...and Sparky going out and waving his hand to signal his team off the field......dramatic day
I wish this was available when I was researching Swinging '73. I found all kinds of articles and did a lot of interviews, but I learned so much just from these four minutes. The burning of the Reds pennant kind of sent chills down my spine. And that's the best footage I have seen of the players going out to LF to calm the fans down. Willie Mays, though he hadn't played in weeks, did a lot of the talking with the umps--and fans.
was 12 yrs old..skipped school with my brother and scalped tickets for $10 each..2nd deck 3rd base side..only playoff game i ever went to..great memories thanx
Incredible footage! While we don't see the beginning of the Rose-Harrelson brawl we get a clear view of Buzz Capra going after Pedro Borbon. Also great shot of Willie Mays coming off the field. The telecast of the game is sadly lost (beyond some short clips) so more footage of the game is priceless.
It's not completely lost. I pulled a few games on tape including this one from an archive about 30 years ago. Straight broadcast 2" quad with commercials and opening. Can't post them here. MLB removes them
@@rokrnrev That is interesting. What games from the 73 NLCS exist, that you know of? I have only ever seen game one. Hopefully, that tape from 30 years ago still exists or has been digitized. MLB is very short sighted. They should be be embracing any copies of games which they neglected to archive.
My mom, when alive, only felt hatred for 1 baseball player, that she could not stand -- as she would say.. "That PETE ROSE!! How dare he try to do that to my (beloved) Buddy Harrelson.. Pete Rose.. Phooey!!".. Thank you, PCSBEAT, for allowing me to bring my mom to life, with this overall great video. And the icing to the cake is the AMAZING Reds Banner being lit on fire.. Super Imposed!? NO WAY!! Classic Stuff!! Thanks again, PCSBEAT!!
I met a guy from Cincinnati a few weeks ago here in Florida. I said " you know the 1st thing I think about when you mentioned Cincinnati? Pete Rose"...lol I still haven't forgave him. Side note: no one got ejected
Watched this game on TV when it happened. It actually took place on Columbus Day, which was why we got to see a daytime game on a weekday. It was a holiday, so no school. The cool thing about this clip is you get to see the Buzz Capra-Pedro Borbon fight, which the TV cameras missed, concentrating on the main fight. But here the view is clear enough you get to see how Borbon ended up with a Mets cap in his hand. The best part, which they did catch on the TV cameras (but missed here) is when Borbon was leaving the field, he put the Mets cap on his head, thinking it was his own cap, and when he realized what he was wearing, he pulled the cap off his head, and grabbed the bill of the cap with his teeth and tore it off the rest of the cap and flung the cap to the ground. I wonder what Rusty Staub and John Milner were talking about so intensely as they left the field. Mets had a history of big fights around second base. Remember Felix Millan got into it with Ed Ott? And in the early days, Elio Chacon started one with Willie Mays, of all people.Imagine starting a fight with WIllie Mays! Chacon was lucky that Willie, unlike Ott, was a nice guy and didn't pick him up and slam him to the ground, like Ott did to Millan.
I remember watching this game on NBC as a 10 year old in Miami. I spent my summers in NYC and grew up a HUGE Mets fan. We were overjoyed at seeing Shea and our Mets locally in Miami. I hated Rose for this incident but grew to appreciate the type of player he was.
I was at that game working as a vendor. All I remember was that after rose had that fight, when he went back to left field, the fans were throwing bottles at him and they had to stop the game.
Do not take this off TH-cam. This is historic footage, but I'm certain that you and any of the readers here know this already. Tremendous upload. Thank you.
I was 12 years old watching this, Harrelson and Rose rumbling on the ground. The Koos pitching. Cool seeing Mays, Seaver, Staub going out to get the fans to stop throwing debris on the field ! ⚾️
Wow amazing footage! I was at this game in the Grandstand, I was 9. I remember the ticket price was $4 which happened to be the cost of a field box seat that year. Lol. Was also the first and only game I was at that a beer was spilled on me :)
Jerry Koosman, Bud Harrelson, Rusty Staub, Tom Seaver, Don Clendenon, Tug McGraw, Tommie Agree Johnny Bench, Pete Rose I wanted to watch this to see what kind of memories came up. I probably saw that game and really disliked Pete Rose after...12 years old. Enjoyed it in the summer with my foster father Pop and brother Joseph. Love you both. We loved the Amazing Mets! "You gotta Believe"- 1969
Great film! My only disappointment is that we’re still looking for filmed evidence of when Pedro borbon accidentally put on a Mets hat after the fight. He got so angry at himself that he bit out a chunk of the brim in the perfect shape of his bite! Any other old-timers remember this?
This is so cool. It manages to encapsulate the past incredibly. The brawling, the flag burning and general debauchery going on in the crowd, even the marching band to an extent demonstrate how everything was so much looser, more chaotic, and less restricted. Shea was such a dump relic of its time too lol like the rest of the stadiums from that era. A lot of this just wouldn’t be seen at a major sports league playoff game in 2020 with how much money those games make now compared to the early 70s. I just think it’s pretty interesting separated from its original context
I agree 100%. I went to a lot of Mets games in the '70s, and you felt like you were taking your life in your hands at some of them. Drinking, cursing, fighting, you name it, especially in the $2.75 seats in the upper deck. I go to Citi Field now and it's a freaking debutante ball in comparison.
Wow…for years I thought that Pedro Borbon only fought with Buzz Capra…but if you look closely @ 2:29, you can clearly see Borbon throwing haymakers at another Met player wearing a Mets jacket…while Capra is on the ground…could that have been Tug McGraw?
This is amazing! Thanks so much for sharing it. Was this footage stored away somewhere and you recently found it? Or were you waiting until now to blow our minds? Either way, it is a joy to watch.
Matthew Kayser ..after saying I would buy one for quite a few years, I finally picked up a digital converter for my old home movies. My Mets movies are the first batch...more to come. Thanks for watching!
Great footage. I watched this entire game.I was 8 years old on Long Island. Such great times.
This is awesome, thanks, I remember that year I was 15, lived in Queen’s,

My 7th birthday, never will forget the Rose/Harrelson fight.

This was great. I was in fifth grade in Brooklyn New York and I remember every single player and number.. Thank you very much for posting this.
I was at that game working as a vendor. All I remember was that after rose had that fight, when he went back to left field, the fans were throwing bottles at him and they had to stop the game.
This is also the most video I have ever seen from this game!
In 11th grade at the time cut school with my friends and went to games 3, 4 and 5, epic playoff series!
This is awesome.
Thanks, Alan...happy to share!

That kid burning the Reds Flag is a rock star!!!! (2:53)

I was at the next game. Rose ephigees were hanging everywhere. Staub destroys his shoulder....
Great stuff...

Funny thing is that Shea Stadium was less than 10 years old when this game was played and was already a dump. That was New York in the 70s.
Played hooky from school (after lunch) to watch this game with Thomas Lapaloosa at my house.
I'm telling! Lol
This is Amazing! Like the Mets were. I've hated the Reds since.
Great Video !
this was on a tuesday a mets rout and subsequent fight between bud and rose!
This was actually on the Monday, Columbus Day.
your right!
their was a huge high school football game in rockland county ,ny the same day tz vs nr@@8644mec
Was at this game as well. Remember NL President coming on the field to try and restore order
Just fantastic to see this all. Thank you for sharing this important piece of Mets history...and my youth.
1st Mets' game I ever attended.
Wow!
My favorite team of all time were those ‘73 Mets.
Great vintage stuff. Better than the Zapruder film.
2 homers for rusty stub?
when the fight ended, borbon accidently put on a mets cap and after realizing what he had done, he the tore it with his teeth!
I just commented on this. I wasn’t sure that anyone else remembered this!
