      The Twin Reverb doesn't have an effects loop. That would be great if it did, because then he could put it after the amp EQ which is how it would work on the actual Mesa

    3:34 Oh hey, that's me. Neat lol.
    I'm actually really surprised how much of a difference that EQ makes. It seems to interact with the amp in a very interesting way where even when the 6600 band is cranked, it doesn't become shrill. It also seems to do something to reenforce the low mids even when 240hz is cut. It's fascinating.

    I used this setup with Graphic EQ myself. I was using it to brighten up clean and distortion tone. Without using EQ it sounded like amp was under a blanket. Saw a comment down here, that it´s better to put EQ in effects loop. For me there wasn´t that much noticeable difference between using Graphic EQ in front of amp or in effects loop. I ended up using it in front of an amp, because it´s easier and doesn´t require 2 more cables and does job perfectly. Nice job, this approach got you like 99% exact tone, the rest 1% is the different types of speakers that he used! Looking forward what will you do next.

    • @NirvanaGuitars

    Hey, saw your video, I didn’t see a comment addressing this, but in the Mesa Boogies that have a Graphic EQ section like this Pedal, the Graphic EQ is Post Knob EQ and Distortion, like on the Mark Series, Studio and the Express. Which is partially why they make such a huge tonal difference, If you run this EQ in the Loop of your amp you may get even closer to the sound. Just be sure to turn the output of the pedal down while it’s in your loop while heavy boosting EQ

    The difference between studio .22 and studio .22+ is not in the eq, but in the circuit - the plus version has an extra "lead master" volume control - both could have been ordered with or without GEQ at the time. The studio preamp is not a rackmount version of these either, but the circuit topology is kinda similar.

    Another great video! This EQ makes a real contribution to Kurt’s sound, which is clearly noticeable in the comparison videos. Looking closely at the studio preamp settings during the Jonathan Ross show, you can see that the EQ switch is set to OFF, and the EQ light is off as well. This means Kurt didn’t engage his EQ for this show. Quite surprising…

    • @vo2themax646
      @vo2themax646 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Agreed. I actually made a similar comment above, before noticing yours here. Unfortunately, right before we get the close up of the amp, kurt can be seen changing some settings. He seems to turn a knob clockwise on the left, and then on the right of the amp. Observing his arms movements, it does not look like he flicks any switches. My guess is he’s turning up volume to get wilder feedback. In summary, we can be quite sure he’s not using the EQ.

    • @Kiwifpms158
      @Kiwifpms158 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@vo2themax646 I agree. I always thought that the preamp's volume knob turned to maximum was part of his settings. But your hypothesis that he turns the volume all the way up to get more feedback holds water. This means that the preamp volume knob was not turned to maximum when he played. This is another clue to the settings he was using...

    I love your videos, man, your tone gets very close to Kurts. Consider get a 4x12 1960 Marshall cab with at least G12T-75s, which he - very probably - used live - although I've seen somewhere somebody, maybe Earnie Bailey, says he liked the 75s, Vintage 30s and Greenbacks. He used 8 4x12 Marshall 1960 cabs on stage, so, very possible he had different speakers - those 3 types - on those cabs.

    A cheaper alternative might be the Ibanez PTEQ Pentatone 5 band EQ pedal. They distilled the EQ part from the Ibanez Pentatone Preamp pedal, which is inspired by Mesa Boogie apparently. You can set the frequencies for the bands and the settings at noon are close to the Mesa ones, so a bit dialed back it should be quite close.

    Idk if you're running it thru your amp's effects loop, or if that tone master model of the fender twin has one but if it does and you haven't tried it, I'd recommend giving it a shot as it will likely give you even more accurate results.
    Also, I'm unsure how pricey these are on the used market but if anyone can't find one and/or is put off by the price, any graphic EQ (so long as its not _total_ shite with an awful, tone sucking bypass) will get you these kind of results. Especially if it has the same EQ points which by and large, most guitar EQ pedals do.
    The vast majority of professional session guitarists use EQ pedals in their rigs for tone shaping and most of them say that their EQ pedal is one of, if not _the_ most important pedal on their board. They can make your Gibson or Fender sound like a Gretsch and vice versa. Make your single coils sound like humbuckers and vice versa. They can inject mids into any overly "scooped" distortion, fuzz or overdrive you have or, work to balance and tame the mids in your tube screamer style pedals. Put _before_ an overdrive or boost in your pedal chain they can push the dirt pedal after them into further saturation/distortion and bring out increased harmonics. Or if you have a distortion/overdrive you think is perfect and just need it to get louder for solos without changing the tone, you can put it _after_ that pedal with just the volume boosted on the EQ. They are as good as it gets when used simply as a clean boost pedal and even a low to mid gain overdrive. Particularly when used with humbuckers. When used in an amp's effects loop, you can dramatically change the charachter of your amp in many of the sane ways I described above with changing the tone of guitars. For instance, they can quite effectively make your Fender style amp sound like a Marshall or Vox.
    You really can't sing their praises enough. The Boss graphic EQ is actually one of the best there is. Just be careful when buying older ones because many of them had a shitty buffered bypass (note; I'm _NOT_ saying all buffered bypass is bad, just the one on many of the older Boss EQ"s) and cheaper components which would result in excess noise when the pedal was "on" and "tone suck"/high end roll off when the pedal is "off." But they can be modded for reasonably cheap by several different companies and solve those problems beautifully. In fact, modded Boss EQ pedals are _the_ choice weapon among pro session guitarists.
    If you _don't_ have an EQ pedal on uour board, you're probably a _NOOB_ 😜 ... or that Derek Trucks guy.

    Hey Eric, I’m a big fan of the channel. Not to piss on your parade but are you sure Kurt was using the EQ on Jonathan Ross? I have a mesa boogie studio pre, and I have actually also stopped and paused the video of territorial pissings in the past, to try to see his settings. You can see the EQ is set to ‘Auto’ (3rd switch from the right). That means the EQ kicks in automatically when the lead channel is active. You can just about see Rhythm switch is down (in the picture left most switch on the bottom). These settings are confirmed by the three LEDs Rhythm, Lead and EQ: Rhythm is red (on), the other two are dark (off). Please correct me if I am wrong.

    I know your Teen Spirit cover is already out for 2 years but considering the fact you have this pedal now, there is a pretty well buried guitar track during the chorus of Teen Spirit that has this sort of descending chord structure with a Chorus effect that a LOT of people miss. Probably because Guitar Hero stems are mostly used online which doesn't have that part fully isolated compared to the RB track having it completely isolated.

    I've been telling you this forever dude but you bit my head off! Mesa or Vox tones will get you closer to Kurt than Fender ever can. Glad you're finally coming around. The twin sucks, it's only good for surf rock.

    I have the Mesa Boogie Pre amp. The graphic EQ doesn't work on the Clean channel and you can see from the pics that he had the clean channel engaged. Not the Lead. Making it the graphic eq setting irrelevant.

    Did you change the amp settings because you added the pedal, or did you just add the pedal with the same settings, like for example the live at Paramount show? I would love to know because I make nirvana videos and I am considering getting that pedal because I have the same amp as you.

    Did you put the EQ in the effects loop of the Twin? That would be the most accurate way to recreate the M/B Preamp

    Hey man i was wondering if you knew why kurt never used a reverb pedal for come as you are or the bridge in drain you. Or something like that, I find it interesting that hey only used Distortion and Chourus

    The only issue I see is that the mesa eq sections work completely different than a normal amp, the knobs control the gain of the frequencies the the eq sliders do, well, what you showed. I think putting this a in the effects loop will work maybe better…..?

    • @NirvanaGuitars
      @NirvanaGuitars  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes it probably would! My Twin doesn't have an effects loop so I can't experiment with that unfortunately

    What strings would you recommend to get Kurt Cobain's tone?

    • @theshadowgovernment_
      @theshadowgovernment_ หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I believe kurt used .010-.052 gauge strings. I use a set of ernie ball skinny top heavy bottoms but really just use whats comfortable for you it doesnt make that big of a difference.
