  • In 2016, the British Army received a new type of Helmet known as the Batlskin Cobra Plus, or more commonly referred to as the Virtus Helmet. In this video, I detail the Helmet, its attachments, specifications and much more.

    Correction on video: The Light Cavalry Regiments do wear the visor and face guard whilst on Operational deployment, contrary to what I said. Here we see elements of A Squadron, Light Dragoons, in Poland with them on:

    Light and comfortable but awkward to get the right fit. Many lads are a size large but the strap on the large is to big. Then if they drop down to medium it is to small. The solution is to get a medium strap with a large helmet but trying to get this through the store is virtually impossible.

    @outthere.1139 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Yeah, I have seen pictures and footage of mounted regiments wear them when they are in vehicles such as foxhounds, which provide little overhead ballistic protection. The jaw protection is not well suited for light infantry, but is great for the armoured infantry use. I would rather go into battle mounted with that on, than nothing. Big upgrade from the Mk 7

    A couple of more issues that my friend in the paras highlighted is that they use to use the mk7 as a hammer on a crow bar to open doors. But when the tried it with a virtus the helmet cracked. Secondly when he was completeing his jump training the buckles snaped on someone's helmet and they where no longer allowed to use them on jumps. Also id be careful since its technically illegal to own those helmets.

      Selling surplused, privately owned items bought directly from the manufacturer or a distributor is all fine and dandy, it's when you're distributing or own a particularly significant number of items that are still public property and technically stolen, smuggled or diverted. If you bought a helmet nicked from stores the MoD probably wouldn't be too inclined to chase it up but if you bought a whole crate of lovely new lids somebody pinched from a delivery truck you'd probably get an unexpected visit if an investigation led it's way to you. Can't tell you much beyond that since I don't know the specifics but usually every nation's standing forces have some procedure to deal with materiel being stolen or diverted.

    (I used to work for a UK company making sound meters, blast recorders etc.) In the mid 2000s, I began to wonder if a lot of the "mental" problems suffered by soldiers after combat might be due to actual damage to the front of the brain, caused mainly by pressure waves from the discharge of their own weapons getting into the sinuses via the nose and mouth. This problem would be bound to get worse with short-barrelled weapons (M4 etc) which are now all the rage. It is known that damage to the front of the brain can cause "depression" and other associated symptoms, from a physical rather than psychological cause. I did mention this concern to people working in the helmet-design sort of field, but I heard no more about it. (Usually the case when you have an IDEA anywhere near the MoD!)
    The Mandible Guard for this helmet is probably not designed with this problem in mind, but it looks as if it would at least help disrupt a pressure wave entering the nose and would certainly be better than nothing, if people wanted to reduce this kind of risk. Pressure waves ,"noise", do not just damage your ears! You need to keep them out of your nose and mouth, too, if they are at all strong.
    The problems with plastic parts breaking in cold weather might be addressed by a better formulation of plastic resin, and might not need need new tooling, which for injection-moulding machines can be expensive. This sort of thing can even be affected by mould temperatures, which are adjustable.
    The inevitable plug: I do have a novel available, it's not related to THIS subject but there is a bit of military-related content and I've been told that it's compulsive reading once people get started.

      @357MagnumPlinkster Society Thank you for the reply. I think modern weapons have made this worse and since the end of the Boer War, there have been two trends: one towards ever shorter barrels and the other towards higher pressure loadings/cartridges. .303" MKVII must have produced a sharper pressure wave than .303" MKVI, and it was realised even during the troubles in Northern Ireland that the 7.62mm SLR was making more soldiers deaf than the .303" Lee Enfield No4 had done. But going deaf is just a diagnostic for hidden damage around the sinuses. The 5.56mm cartridge may be smaller than 7.62mm, but it was always just as high a pressure, and recent loadings intended to make the M4 and L22 actually effective, push the pressures higher still. That's before you even consider nearby mortar bursts and IEDs. Soldiers need something that stops pressure waves getting straight inside their heads by the shortest route.

      @357MagnumPlinkster Society Getting ministers to listen is something else that has gotten more difficult in recent years. Under Thatcher and Major, if you thought of something the minister didn't know, you could get him to listen and even respond. The most helpful minister was Jonathan Aitken (it's a shame he got himself jailed) and I was able to get things done, here and there. But from the moment that Blair entered Number 10, onwards, I have not been able to get ANYTHING even read by a minister (anywhere in government, not just the MoD), let alone responded to. All of a sudden there was a wall of "advisors" who were party political but paid civil service salaries, and they cut the ministers off from all outside sources of information not accepted by the "director of communications" who would be someone like Alistair Campbell or, worse, Daniel Korsky. Brown, Cameron and May did the same. It means that since 1997 we've been governed by blindfolded men, who might have been capable of better decisions if they had some sort of contact with the outside world and actual facts, now and then.

    Would have very much preferred the helmet contract to stay with NP Aerospace. The new Revision helmets have a lot of issues, not just with the British army. Unfortunately, the Virtus helmet (and Revision PE helmets in general) aren't that great. They get absolutely trashed in non-ballistic bumps, unlike conventional aramid helmets, which was a cause for rejection in some American units.
    On paper the helmet is great, PE is an interesting material, but in the field the flaws of PE really shows.

      @Kyoptic 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      LordHyper, your front may be to the enemy, but that doesn't mean that a grenade or artillery shell won't land behind you. Especially in modern Urban combat. Scott's question was legitimate.
      Old WW1/WW2 helmets tended to have better neck protection, because body armour was next to non-existent, so maximum protection for the head was necessary. Modern infantrymen have body armour that often has neck protection included, or is so bulky anyway that the gap at the back of the helmet is needed just so the helmet doesn't get pushed over the soldier's eyes every time they lie prone.

    No protection from shrapnel striking the cerebellum. The ideal helmet shape is the ww2 german helmet AND to be as lightweight as possible - the atlas carries all the weight the head plus helmet. In the future it might well be that helmets will be 3D printed after a 3d scan of an individual head.This way the helmet can be individually tailored to each head- not to mention no need to hold expensive stock of helmets not being used.
