Another hack I have been using for about five months is to cycle through meal kit delivery services. The sign up is usually a few hundred off the first four boxes, then you move on to the next service that offers a discount of four boxes. After about four or five, the first ones start to offer you discounts to reinstate the account and you take advantage of those offers too. Haven’t paid full price for those services for about five months and for a household of two, I can get three meals out of a two serve meal and have lunch for the next day. Surprisingly, I have spent so much less than groceries at the supermarket, plus you get a great variety of dishes to cook each week.

The two areas I need to work on (but couldn't put my finger on)
    1. Extra money = extra money to SAVE not spend.
    2. Thinking I deserved to reward myself with a fancy beverage every time I left the house.

I have not "eaten out" in over a year. It's doable. Saves a TON of money!! I've always taken my lunch so that wasn't an issue. The two big things for me are Amazon and buying junk food when i go grocery shopping. 2024 was better than 2023, and I'm trying to get it to zero for 2025. A written budget is a must!! I use the free Every Dollar App

I'm saving for a used vehicle. I saw a used 2007 Honda Accord sedan priced at $4,500. That was the year I graduated from a local community college. I am 43. I want to buy it on my own. I have a few thousand dollars in an account that I intend to use to buy it in a few months. Thank you for the advice! I started to save a couple hundred dollars every month since February.

What a revelation: I,too, do this too. Each time I go out I end up stopping to pick up something now I know it was a reward thing.
    Wow. What a revelation.

I have cut my grocery store bill in half. However, when I see something on sale that wasn’t in the sales add- often times it might an item they are trying to sell out of- in order to restock something else - as li g as it is something i typically use or want to use in a recipe/meal - I will buy it - because it’s a great price and will save me money the next time I need that item. We are also very good at ensuring g we eat everything we buy as to not waste any food at all. And, definitely shop the sale “leaders” and freeze meat that you buy at great prices so another week when you need to grocery shop- you will not have to buy, say chicken, for example, when it is not on sale or not as good of a sale.

Title is a bit misleading nonetheless good advice. It should probably say, saving 1 year worth of living expenses. But you got my attention, so thanks!

The only time we use meal delivery is if we are both miserably sick, even then I cringe spending the money on it 😬

I don’t understand how people are able to afford those food delivery apps. I was thinking about ordering from one and it came out to be double the price. Not worth it.

Love the tip on tracking your receipts. I’ve been doing it for a few months now on google docs and it’s helped me see where my money is going and recognize my spending habits.

In our household we actually break down grocery receipts to food/ingredients, snacks, household (toiletpaper, cleaners, etc), and water/beverages so we can see if we may be overspending in the smaller areas.

great tip! I too think I deserve a treat whenever I go out and do errands hehe 😅 But I've been trying to make my own iced coffee before leaving and that's helped. Also I use the Walmart app to shop for groceries but I prefer to shop in person. So once I have all my items in the cart, I basically use the shopping cart as my grocery list and I stay within budget. The key is to stay focused on what I NEED & not get distracted by other items lol. thanks for sharing 👍🏾 😊

Because we always saved our utility and medical bills and grocery receipts for a whole year, we had a foundation to use to establish our planned spending. Whenever we spent less on a category, the excess went into a reserve fund to be used in a bill such as heating and cooling went over the monthly amount. The goal was to be within the limits for the entire year. We didn't sweat the monthly changes.

I was at Kohl's and bought this like finger puppet thing that was at the register and it literally rang up as impulse.... I'm like yeah... That definitely was an impulse to keep my daughter happy 😂

" i think i need a treat just because i left my house" sounded incredibly stupid. And thats me! I needed to hear it put that way because... serious? Because you left the house. What are me 5? I need to get real with myself.

a good tip to avoid impulse buying is to put the amount you plan to spend in CASH. and try to pay for everything with th cash only. that way you’re more mindful about what you’re getting. the goal would be to not go over the cash amount and to not put the remaining balance on your card

Watching a month ago: a sandwich (for work) when I bought gas (2x week) totaled up to enough $$ to buy the sale items at kwik trip station that made a lot of simple meals for this month. An onion, bag of potatoes, 8oz sliced cheese, loaf bread & # free bananas (coupon). The peanut butter & jam sandwiches for work tastes better knowing that. 😊 fact.

I've tried to avoid eating out and it just got worst 😢 I have ADHD and things like buying groceries, and cooking have an additional difficulty level. Almost every time I cook, I forgotten about it and the later days I end up with moldy food in the fridge and eating outside 😢

When I cook for myself I cook for 4 people. One meal today, one for tomorrow and 2 serves in the freezer for when I can't be bothered to cook. Soups, currys, casseroles etc are easy to freeze & reheat just as tasty

Same here! I grow a lot of my vegetables or buy on sale in season, cut them immediately after the harvest or buy and freeze them, so that I can cook a healthy meal within a few minutes. I try to eat the same breakfast over and over again to not leave the house hungry.

Meal delivery services bring your food to your door, and the driver may have taken a sip from your drink or dipped their hands into your food, because not all vendors properly secure the food. Disgusting.
