Don't matter what anyone says, an Alien movie without any aliens would have been an even bigger disaster... possibly even a franchise-killing disaster.
This video should be shot at least a day after the trailer is dropped so the writers can see the people comments & address them like the good ol SJ Plus days
The Picard stunt hands remind me of a scene from the knight rider pilot (or one of the very first episodes) when Michael is waiting for KITT at the side of the road and you clearly see two arms in the same colour as the seats from behind the driver seat steering the car
10:53 So I'm not the only one who laughed so hard when Fassbender went "NO!" Don't get me wrong. Fassbender is an amazing actor but the delivery didn't work for me.
"This isn't the movie we wanted/asked for" is not a good way to go into watching a movie. It will make everything feel like a missed opportunity. You get more out of the movie (even bad ones) if you go along w/ the direction it takes you!
Oh no. The film does not get better if I watch it and do not get what was promised. Alien and Aliens are good films. Everything else was butchered or plain bad. Aliens 3 killed the last main characters - the one Ripley saved in Aliens so that the director could tell his HIV-allegory. And then WB forced him to dial down on violence. So we get a cheap story device that renders the last movie pointless AND a boring film where nothing happens AND nearly no blood at all in a scenario created to have gory violence. I am not willing to even talk about Alien 4. And then we get those godawful prequels from a director that lost it that did not get the money for the film he wanted to make so he made 2 (two!) godawful movies with really stupid protagonists that get killed by being stupid. The Nostromo Crew was also stupid, but not as stupid as in the prequels, besides all they were interested in was their payment. They should have made one Robocop movie and leave it at that or get someone who is as violent and as dark humored as Verhoeven. Robocop 2 was an offense. Robocop 3 and the reboot are abominations. I hate it when that happens. The direct-to-dvd sequels and TV adaptations Disney bumped out after building up a franchise with one good movie are another example. Splash 2, Alladin 2,... you name it. They do not get better if I follow the lead of the director.
People hate too much on Alien 3. That movie is pretty damn good. Before anyone asks, yes I have watched it lately, I own the blu-ray. While inferior to Alien and Aliens, it's by no means a horrible film like Resurrection
It changed genres in my opinion. The first two are about victims rising up to become victors against insurmountable odds. That's why despite having a very different feel, the fourth movie still stayed closer to the genre, in my opinion.
Get Trolled Resurrection ruined a cool moment with the dual guns up the sleeves. That's unforgivable. Also, time to get over the killing off two beloved characters in the credits and the Assembly Cut redeemed 3.
Your talk about Ridley Scott reminds of the story of when they were filming the 1960 movie, "The Alamo". Apparently John Ford, who was in his mid-60's, showed up as it was John Wayne's directorial debut. He more or less started taking over, was messing up what Wayne wanted to do, and they finally had to just send him away with the second unit to get him out of their hair.
Who does Walter (Fassbender) sound like in this movie? Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer) from True Blood. Listen to the android conversation at 11:25. He is channeling his best southern vampire here.
I've finally thought of how a Prometheus/Covenant crew could make a worse choice. "Let's send our small children down there to check out the space ship".
at about 3:40 : Yes, I would like to have known, after all these years, what exactly the giant in the crashed ship was, and its connection to the Alien race, since his ship was full of its eggs. However, learning that the cool, elephant-trunked Giant was actually just Albino White Folk (I know, a bit redundant ^_^), and that a crazy android made the Alien race because he hated his creators.... was just damned dissapointing, is all :-(
Aliens was the last great Alien film. The development of the characters the dialouge action scenes etc. Then Alien 3 was basically a redo of Alien but on a prison planet? The killing off of the characters of Newt and Hicks really was a downer because we just got to know and care about those characters. Hicks plays the nonoense sensible leader who also seemed to have a good heart and intentions Newt the survivor and they kill them off in the beginning of the third film. I heard though on a double toasted review that their were lots of problems with the third movie. I remember an Alien comic came out with the continuing story of Newt and Hicks back in the late 80's that was pretty good. Hell the action and plot characters and monsters are more compelling from the video games than the movie franchise. My favorite Sci-Fi is gritty raw with great characters monsters and interesting set pieces. An adventure in space either fun and exciting or dark and mysterious. That is what make B movies so good. Rather watch an old B movie from the 80's than another preachy Alien flick.
Dunno Covenant for me falls in a very weird place, I don't want to call it a pointless addition, but it did mostly write off everything that happened in Prometheus. The film was visually stunning, they didn't hold back with the r rating. This might be a bad film for hard core alien fans, but for me it leans more to the positive side...
Because different people have different opinions. Also, there is reviewing it at as a standalone movie in contrast to reviewing it as part of a series. Also, while this is mainly focused on the story reviewers put more emphasis on cinematography, music, etc.
Hysterical, well done! At first I straight up didn't believe them when they said flute play. I just couldn't believe it and that would never even occur to me to put that into an Alien movie. But alas... we'll always have Alien(s)
Mmmm.... I don't think Ridley Scott actually created the Alien franchise. I'm pretty sure the studio just hired him to direct the script that was written for Alien. He was an integral part, but they could have hired just about any director. Alien was only his second feature film, if I'm not mistaken.
instead of timidly showing that the android in the end is David, they should have persisted with Walter. and then maybe explored how Walter, impacted by David, evolves to defeat his pre-programmed restrains and breaks free to reveal the toxicity of creations - that it expresses its own individuality and does so often by usurping its creator(s).
Remember when Ridley said this new franchise was loosely connected to the Alien franchise, but then money got involved and the studio won. Now you have this. Should have let Ridley do what he wanted from the start.
People don't seem to get that we will never get an Alien movie like the first Alien. You know why? Because when the Alien first came out, it was revolutionary and new, no one had seen anything like it before. And there lies the problem: once that movie was over, it was no longer new and exiting. You can't hide the alien any more, because everyone and their mother knows what the alien looks like. You can't be scared of the chest burster, because you know it's coming.
Such a disappointing movie. Who's idea was it to put deleted scenes, that could've made the mvoie so much better, on youtube? That's basically requiring the audience to do homework so they can fully appreciate the movie.
folks who loved the film are the same folks who have been indoctrinated by the onslaught of Sharknado SyFy c-movie horror flicks. I think Scott failed to focus on the actual story continuation but instead focused on killing and horror.
did Dan just kind of confirm that Star Trek: The Next Generation is an up coming Honest TV Trailer? I mean, why else would he "officially" (obviously isn't just for his own personal enjoyment) be going back and rewatching the whole thing?
I'm going to go with my standby theory that every movie is gradually getting us closer to living in the fictionalized world of Idiocracy... in this case the Alien Franchise, which maybe the alien's aren't always to blame; however maybe they are more of a savor; to the inevitable aftermath that the colonist, "colonizing" in yes, Blade Runner and the Alien movies are creating a world like that of Idiocracy.
Nope, it was just disgusting and it didn't make any sense! So if that thing goes into your ear it comes out from your back, but if it goes into your nose it comes out from your mouth? Like: what?
Nothing in this movie was scary because you didn't give af about the characters one bit, and it rarely even showed anything. That scene did show something, but it was just bloody, not scary. AVPR was scarier and grosser. Actually, if I were to mention a scene, it was just showing all of the dissections and whatever was left of Shaw's corpse (the one character we do care about). Too bad they basically ignored all of that.
I might be in the minority here, but I enjoyed a lot about this movie, most of which was the least xenomorph related. The opening sequence and the David-Michael exchanges where haunting, though provoking and just beautiful sequences. I'm a fan of most of the original Alien movies but I think this would have been a way better movie without the Alien tacked on to it. I enjoyed the whole Blade Runner, Ex Machina, Space Odyssey explorations a lot more than the actual Alien parts, but I get that that's not what most people were expecting going in to this movie. Ripley should have straight up called it Prometheus 2 but "marketing" I guess.
I loved how Star Trek The Next Generation teased with the cliche of one twin having to die with the Riker copy NOT dying. Or the cliche of having dopplengangers hating each other. Why is that so damn aytpical?
Alien: Covenant is just like Terminator Genisys, except it takes itself seriously, which is why it's actually a greater insult to the Alien franchise than Genisys was to the Terminator. Alien Covenant fucks up the lore for the Alien mythology so badly I don't even want to watch the old movies anymore. this movie is the biggest F U to a fanbase I've ever seen, worse than the Mandarine twist, worse than Michael Bay's Transformers, worse than Battle of five Armies.... not as bad as The Last Airbender, but close. yeah I'm THAT guy! for me, the first two Alien movies are sacrosanct, but Ridley Scott himself had to do a George Lucas and fuck HIMSELF up the franchise. every time I see anything related to this movie I feel betrayed, yes I'm salty! I can be an angry fanboy about something I like, can't I?
+ScreenJunkies News , please get Joe Starr back on camera, at least for things like these commentaries. (If he is willing) or tell us more about why we haven't seen him in a while.
I enjoyed Spencer calling 'pause' not to discuss the trailer but to continue gossiping about James Franco.
You can hear the spirit of Honest Trailers whenever Spencer speaks. It's obvious he's the head writer.
Or at least, one of the head writers. As intelligent and articulate Dan Murrell is, Spencer Gilbert's sarcastic wit really comes through.
The biggest fault of this movie is what they did with Shaw. I think everyone wanted her to search and find the home of the Engineers.
This commentaries segment is awesome!
I did ask "Why are we here?" but in reference to the theater
Lots of fun. Thanks guys!
awesome job guys
a little bit of saturday night live Sean Connery impression in Fassbenders walter voice
OMG. Loved that episode of TNG. I actually cried when I 1st saw it in the 90's. As a former flautist, it hit a soft spot. 💓
Ridley Scott didn't create Alien; Dan O'Bannon created Alien. Giger, Scott, everyone else came afterwards.
I think fassbenders walter voice is a bit of a nod to bishops voice in aliens
which would make sense as walter is an older model
This series is one of the things I felt I really wanted to watch from back in day the day of SJP. I'm glad it's free now
Don't matter what anyone says, an Alien movie without any aliens would have been an even bigger disaster... possibly even a franchise-killing disaster.
Like Prometheus?
This video should be shot at least a day after the trailer is dropped so the writers can see the people comments & address them like the good ol SJ Plus days
I actually am super interested in the backstory of the engineers.
Amazon TV show or something no more prequel movies please
Did anyone but me think of the Golgafrinchams from Hitch Hikers' Guide to the Galaxy when he mentioned getting rid of their stupid people.
Well, the lady MacBeth reference was super ironic because I am currently doing MacBeth homework.
Fassbender's Walter voice sounds a lot like the voice he did in Frank
He sounds like vincent D'onofrio in MIB
Any chance you guys at ScreenJunkies can turn the volume down a bit on the trailers please. Makes it hard to hear you when you talk over it. Thanks.
Excited to know why Dan's rewatching next generation
Ridley hardly created Alien, don't forget about Giger or the writers
It was also a ripoff of an older movie.
Not buffalo bill, but the same actor, "candycane, I'm coming for ya candy cane". Check out the movie "joy ride" you'll see what I mean
I would love to see the director reacting to this
Straight up, props to James Franco.
The Picard stunt hands remind me of a scene from the knight rider pilot (or one of the very first episodes) when Michael is waiting for KITT at the side of the road and you clearly see two arms in the same colour as the seats from behind the driver seat steering the car
I love this commentary :)
It's a good film. Not ALIEN 1979 but better then the shit we get to see nowadays! Wake up and look at it as a film and not a fan fiction!
Walter's voice is Fassbender's using his voice from FRANK
10:53
So I'm not the only one who laughed so hard when Fassbender went "NO!" Don't get me wrong. Fassbender is an amazing actor but the delivery didn't work for me.
Yeah, that s**t was so hilarious.

The correct answer is that Walter sounds just like Nicolas Cage
5:55 Prometheus was a good movie
I agree.
Reach out to Jeremy,Chris and Barrett for the collab

Aaron Jones Just imagine if the suits had left him alone. They made a worse movie and the Assembly Cut isn't the full movie as it would've been.
Danny Meegan Have you seen the Assembly Cut?
Yo should put the trailer volume wayy lower so we can hear your commentary.
Your talk about Ridley Scott reminds of the story of when they were filming the 1960 movie, "The Alamo". You all did not mention how James Franco was in it to specifically die.
Yeah, what a waste.
Prequelitis.....Hah!,Somebody send Rid a grip of Penaccilin while Fox puts Neill back on speed dial,yo
When are you releasing your Galaxy Quest movie?
man, I really do not want another Ridley Scott-directed Alien movie... *ever* again.
Yeah, he really should just retire from the Alien franchise.
I've finally thought of how a Prometheus/Covenant crew could make a worse choice.
"Let's send our small children down there to check out the space ship".

Why does TH-cam send me notifications for the commentary videos but not the Honest Trailer videos?
WALTER SOUNDS LIKE THE BUG MONSTER IN THE EDGAR SUIT FROM MEN IN BLACK I JUST REALIZED THAT
Dan's impression of him certainly does, that was my 1st thought too
Sugar.
Water.
MOAR.

Covenant makes Prometheus looks much better in retrospect
How does Alien: Covenant have 70% on rottentomatoes...
Because, out of 294 critic reviews that are posted in the site, 207 reviews liked/loved/enjoyed it.
Jesper I see someone did there homework..
Cos rotten tomatoes is unreliable
mk6rfc1 um no it isn't .
Because different people have different opinions. Also, there is reviewing it at as a standalone movie in contrast to reviewing it as part of a series. Also, while this is mainly focused on the story reviewers put more emphasis on cinematography, music, etc.
Hey guys are these not going on plus anymore? Is plus finished?
He wanted to make the perfect life form? What is perfect about needing another life form in order for the “perfect life form” grow into adulthood?
Definitely could've made a solid Steve Bannon joke about Fassbender playing his own flute
yeah, what the heck happened to Franco?
Easiest paycheck ever.
Hysterical, well done! At first I straight up didn't believe them when they said flute play. I just couldn't believe it and that would never even occur to me to put that into an Alien movie. But alas... we'll always have Alien(s)
Wait so who does the voice over for honest trailers?
Mmmm.... I don't think Ridley Scott actually created the Alien franchise. I'm pretty sure the studio just hired him to direct the script that was written for Alien. He was an integral part, but they could have hired just about any director. Alien was only his second feature film, if I'm not mistaken.
What are you doing with Star Trek TNG?
I want to see it when you're done.
Excellent.
When you do quantin Tarantino films
Walter sounds like Danial Day Louis in There will be blood.
instead of timidly showing that the android in the end is David, they should have persisted with Walter. and then maybe explored how Walter, impacted by David, evolves to defeat his pre-programmed restrains and breaks free to reveal the toxicity of creations - that it expresses its own individuality and does so often by usurping its creator(s).
alien vs predator was actually good. (for what it was) not a gothic sci fi suspense, more like a shootemup sci fi that was just awesome.
I would love to hear Spencer's Everything Wrong List!
The head bobbing in the sink looked amazing, the alien signalling a touchdown was one of the dumbest things I've ever seen. Covenant in a nutshell
Actually I like the movie a little more now with Dan's explanation of Davis motives, thanks guys.
Remember when Ridley said this new franchise was loosely connected to the Alien franchise, but then money got involved and the studio won. Now you have this. Should have let Ridley do what he wanted from the start.
I guess I'm the only person who loves getting all the back stories on things
People don't seem to get that we will never get an Alien movie like the first Alien. You know why? Almost seems like Ridley Scott would've rather made a Star Trek movie.
"No one is saying it's a great Alien movie" except for Matt Zoller Seitz and Alison Wilmore
The voice you guys are betting on sounds like Nixon from Watchmen
Or at least, your impressions of it do
ALIEN & ALIENS. I ignore the rest.
folks who loved the film are the same folks who have been indoctrinated by the onslaught of Sharknado SyFy c-movie horror flicks. I think Scott failed to focus on the actual story continuation but instead focused on killing and horror.

Actually the reason why the first movie was so good was because it wasn't written by Scott but by Dan O'bannon
The Walter voice is very much Christian Bale in Equilibrium.
Wish they atleast praised the neomorphs/back bursters cause that scene on the ship was as scary as the original aliens
Nope, it was just disgusting and it didn't make any sense! So if that thing goes into your ear it comes out from your back, but if it goes into your nose it comes out from your mouth? Like: what?

OmegaPyron I didn't care about the original cast from the one.. so ur point?
Yeah I was terrified when Ridley Scott made the avant garde decision to recreate a Three Stooges sketch in the middle of that scene.
DemiGod 3scrub only Ripley really.. Parker was cool I guess..
I might be in the minority here, but I enjoyed a lot about this movie, most of which was the least xenomorph related. When will dan take that hat off
That obviously wasn't the Engineer's planet, rather another planet created by the Engineers. All of the corpses in the movie are human sized.
Prometheus would've been the perfect addition to the alien franchise if it was actually good. from horror to action to sci fi
I thought David killed the engineers because he felt he was the better being
I loved how Star Trek The Next Generation teased with the cliche of one twin having to die with the Riker copy NOT dying. Or the cliche of having dopplengangers hating each other. Why is that so damn aytpical?

Okay Movie, You're The Movie
Those weren't engineers that David killed
+ScreenJunkies News , please get Joe Starr back on camera, at least for things like these commentaries. (If he is willing) or tell us more about why we haven't seen him in a while.
1:48 Byron ;)
It really goes to show how The Thing was a much better prequel than either Prometheus or Covenant.
2 great Alien movies, 3 bad Alien movies, and 3 okay Alien movies
fastbender is doing jimmy stewart a bit
Technically Fassbender isn't British, he's Irish-German
I liked the movie more than those guys did despite not being perfect at all! And I think the flute scene is genuinely great!
MOBILE.. MOBE-I'LL look see, there's an I in it. It's right there between the B and the L. MOBE-I'LL
"The Death of the Alien Franchise What Happened?" Directed by Jon Schnepp
