- WWII Hawker Typhoon veteran, Bernard Gardiner - extracts from an interview recounting his life and his flying on the weekend of his 100th birthday celebration at the RAF Club, London.
An inspiration to all and a great supporter of this project to raise the funds required to return RB396 to the sky so that she can be the living, breathing, working and flying memorial that those who operated the Typhoon, and especially those killed, so rightly deserve.

Strange this, my Uncle, still alive, was a Typhoon Pilot, 183 Squadron. His life as a Pilot is voice recored for History.

What a remarkable man,
What a humble man and for him it was "Just another day at the office " I'm not sure of l would have been so stoic about flying the Typhoon for the first time knowing it's fatal foibles . I have Roland Beamonts book and the Typhoon certainly was a very difficult aircraft with a number of highly skilled test pilots and top RAF boys losing their lives. Certainly , in today's world this would not be permitted but back then we had to beat the enemy at all costs ! Which is precisely why l have nothing but the utmost respect for the men who carried on regardless . That was a great tale about the Mossie and the blond ...may have been Lettice Curtis . An absolute privilege to listen to Mr. Gardiner . Thankyou.
Have you seen the brilliant TV documentary about the ATA, and the shameful but typical way those very brave ladies were treated, who , with minimum trainig time , were expected to fly ANYTHING from a Spitfire to a Lancaster, unescourted and without arms.
@@MrDaiseymay Eight times more men than women flew for the ATA, under exactly the same circumstances.
How were they badly treated?
@@offshoretomorrow3346 They weren't badly treated. But they could have been trained a bit more thoroughly.
@@colderwar My flight surgeon, who has since flown west was a ferry pilot during the war here in the states. He told me he use to pick up new fighters and fly them to their destinations for shipping overseas. He told me “they were brand new and beautiful…the Corsair was a Cadillac…”

A bit of a ladies man, whoever was interviewing him, he was fairly relaxed and became more so throughout the interview. You brought out the best in him.

That was such a delight to listen to him talking about his time in the R.A.F! My mum was in the W.R.A.F and we used to talk about her experiences and they were as crystal clear as this gentleman was! Sadly my mum passed away in 2019 aged 95! It is wonderful to see the brave man at 100 years old Bravo and thank you for your what you did for us all! I salute you sir!

Very interesting, Mr Gardiner’s story about destabilizing the V1 by having it fly into the Typhoon’s slipstream.
I had heard stories about fighters putting their wingtips under the wingtip of the V1 and suddenly raising their wing, but such a method had seemed to me awfully difficult to practice!
The “Gardiner method” appears to have ben much more practical and effective.
Method over attempted method, any owd route, slong as it destabilised,
Hawker Typhoon 🌀 was a cool-looking aircraft, almost as cool as this chap!
The story tell about the tree point landing is remarkable. Obviously the training was not an important item in training.
It was more a prestigious thing to do. Tail low is fine but a 3 point was mostly to end in a wreck..
Mains first and fly the tail. This information I have form other vets.

Best wishes to this organization and it's goal of getting a Typhoon in the air once again. It was a very significant contributor to victory in the Western theater and should be remembered in all its roaring glory.

Great story! My father was a pilot trainer in Guinea Fowl in the former Rhodesia. Was that where you trained? He also got interested in fly at a flying circus.
The disrespect - scrapping an entire fleet of a fighter that men served and died in - without preserving some as memorials.

What a brave young man, as all those who served our country in those darkened days.
The Hurricane was good, being sturdy and a great bomber killer, then the Typhoon was much better, so much more power, and at lower levels an amazing aircraft and the Tempest was even better again.
Hawker made some just brilliant and ground breaking aircraft, which culminated into the Hunter and then the Harrier, the best aircraft that didn't need an airfield, how brilliant was that!
BUT what a sad epitaph to such a great aircraft, that the only remaining example is in a museum, but no flying examples, who says "history is written by the victors"?
I'm lucky enough to be able to see the 'Typhoon' in the RAF Museum @ Hendon, but many others aren't so fortunate to be able to do so.

Thought the Tempest was the carrier version of the Typhoon, wasn't it the RAM that made the. difference.
