I just replaced the radiator in my '04 (cracked) and now I'm losing coolent through the water pump. I guess the old gasket didn't like the new coolent. Thanks for the vid, you have no idea how helpful videos like these are for us DIYers that aren't real sure where to start. Great Job! Stay muddy my friends!
One of the best instruction videos I've ever seen. Like Vinny C. said, "no BS talking and just the point." And no skips in the process like some of these clowns do. Thanks
Just bought a CJ7 and found your ridiculously easy to follow tutorials! Absolutely awesome man! Your relaxed and easy going demeanor are PERFECT for TH-cam....you can really be a star on here...just more more more bro! Keep it up!
Man, Thank you so much for this video. Just replaced my first Water pump on the TJ and this was massively helpful. The fan clutch nut was a pain in the ass though, tried everything to get it off and finally just bought a universal pulley holder off of amazon for like $20 bucks, worked like a charm. Thanks!
Fantastic set of instructions, wonderfully presented. I have the same year/model as you and followed the video exactly.....Perfect job with no problems....Thanks very much.......
Great job there bud. I have had a 74 Grand Cherokee 2 door, 89 white box cherokee, 93 grand, 97 brand new Grand, and now this 2001 Laredo...love me some jeeps! I have to do this water pump 2nd one in 169K miles...also, so this is a great way to find out since the last one was under warranty and they did this, but being a backyard junky mechanic, not that I couldn't do this! Thanks for the info...you are easy to listen to..and have that killer GOTEE~ JOhnne in Seattle
yep, I had all of those, and I wish that the '74 had lasted longer that was a fun ride of steel, big Ol' 401 engine quad carb, lock in hubs using your fingers...but alas, it was worn out...now I have a 2001 with that mysterious head gasket problem and or cracked head syndrome, yet it is more cost effective for me to just tear out that head and put in one that is new, and ride that rig another 150K as all the other parts have been changed out over the years..besides I like the ride and look of that year...
Just subscribed to you. I like you work style (my dad was a car and bike mechanic from the 1930s through the 1970 so I learned old school DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME!). I'm also with ya! Cars suck. Believe I'll be watching you a bit as we just got the youger daughter a 1999 Jeep Wrangler. Oh joy! Thanks for your help!!!! Nice work!
Your welcome. I love how that video turned out. It was spur of the moment as I noticed a puddle, jumped on my motorcycle, bought a pump and installed it that night with the camera rolling. Jeep On!
Ya, but what about if the anti-freeze that's in there comes out looking pretty bad .... like brown paint. Then what is the best way to flush out everything? Other sources I hear make it seem as if you get any regular hose water in the system, it's not good for the water jacket.
Great video Very well done. I only hope that my water pump is the only leak. it appears to be coming from everywhere under the front and even the back. Changed a leaky radiator and when filling up radiator just as fluid went through the top hose water started coming from everywhere under car. it was not running and was not even full or warm just cold fluid started coming out from bottom of motor. cars do suk. Thanks again
Yes, it tries to turn doesn't it. That's why I use the hammer. The impact usually breaks it loose. If you have a strap wrench you can remove the belt and grab the pulley.
wwwCARSSUCKcom Had to get a fan wrench at advanced auto. Free loaner. Thanks for all your videos. Truly to the point and concise. Water pump replaced and Jeep runs great with no leaks!!! Jeep on!!!
@@user-nq5rd4ck5z question i just finished water pump job now moving on to jeep stalling while moving i hooked up my fuel pressure gauge started engine it bounced around 46-49 psi is that ok?
Hi, my tj jeep 4.0 has some heating issue. I noticed the fan is blowing air toward the bumper. It seem to be wrong way. How can this happen? Thank you for asnwers.
Nice video, I may have to do this in the morning. It has been years since I did this last. Do you know if this leak would cause a low idle speed, not picking up speed and reducing? I just do not remember what it did when last water pump went out. Thanks
How did you tell it was your water pump leaking? I just noticed a puddle after driving mine, coolant definitely coming down the front of the motor and hitting the steering components so I assume that's what it is just trying to confirm. Tutorial makes the job look like something I can do so I'm going to give it a try. Thanks!
Korey Rudd Yeah, it's hard to see the bottom of the pump. If I remember right I used a light and a mirror to look at the bottom of the pump. There is a weep hole on the bottom of the pump. if you see stains or fluid there, it's the pump.
Hey I'm just curious. You said a few times in the video that "the book calls for..." what might I ask is the book? I'm used to aircraft maintenance guides and that's what I'm thinking when you say that. If it is like those, is there anywhere I can buy one?
It peed on the floor. There is a weep hole on the bottom. Lay on the ground and look up. If there are antifreeze stains coming out of the weep hole, the pump is bad.
Pump failed, and then discovered that the plastic portion of the top of the radiator had an 8" split in it as well. So... I guess the radiator comes out first, the pump gets replaced, and then the radiator. Jeep = Just. Empty. Every. Pocket. If I keep this LJ just one more year; everything but the body and interior is going to be damned near new!
Best how to video on TH-cam. No BS and right to the point!!!!! Thank you sir!
Well, it could be in hd and have better lighting, but thanks. Jeep On!
Getting ready to do this job next week. Great video, NO BS talking just to the point...thanks

Great video. It made the job easy. I like how you showed how to put everything back together. Most of these how-to videos don't do that.

Thread sealant on the water pump bolts? Don't they go into the water jacket?

I plan on doing this as well as the Fan clutch and the thermostat. Any other parts I should replace while I'm in there?
+Timothy Gabriel Hoses, belt and belt tensioner, maybe.
+wwwCARSSUCKcom thanks for a quick reply, should I use a 50/50 coolant or just antifreeze? (2002 TJ 210k)
Timothy Gabriel definitely 50/50. You can buy 100 percent coolant and mix with water.
hello .. you put dough seal that on the side of the seal that is leaning on the pump? not the attached side that is stuck to the engine block?
Huh?
@@user-nq5rd4ck5z it's the translation that's bad ... to put it simply. should not the joint paste on both sides of the joint?
@@vidal.damien Yes. I am pretty sure I put it on both sides of the gasket.
Nice video, I may have to do this in the morning. It has been years since I did this last. Do you know if this leak would cause a low idle speed, not picking up speed and reducing? I just do not remember what it did when last water pump went out. Thanks
Unless you have lost all of your antifreeze and are overheating, I think you might have two problems. Keep us posted.

I have an 04 Jeep Wrangler. Water pump replaced by dealership and it still leaks . any ideas? I am finding fluid on the back of the fan shroud.
Jannette Cox It's probably a hose or the radiator. It can be hard to find because the fan blows it all over.
Should I put RTV on both sides of the gasket or just the pump side?
funkyk Both sides.
How did you get the fan off so easy? one hit on the wrench with a hammer, doesn't work for me!!
Get a bigger hammer. :)
Mine is fused on as well
Mine too. Any tips?
A ratchet on the tensioner tightening instead of loosening while second person hammers the fan wrench can prevent the belt from slipping.
Might be a dumb question but is it the same for a 98’ 4.0L?
Very similar if not identical.
is that inch pounds or foot pounds for the water pump blots
Darrell Hazy ft lbs

How did you know the water pump was bad?
It peed on the floor. There is a weep hole on the bottom. Lay on the ground and look up. If there are antifreeze stains coming out of the weep hole, the pump is bad.
What water pump replacement you chose?
Don't remember if it was the Zone or Napa. Came home, saw the puddle, jumped on the motorcycle and bought one.
@@user-nq5rd4ck5z I'm on the fence about picking one. I'm leaning towards metal propellers rather than plastic. Need to change my fan clutch as well.
