After Riker read Picard's expression and quietly left him alone, Picard clutches the flute to his chest -- as if embracing a life he's still struggling to integrate into his reality -- Sir Patrick displays a brilliantly perfect flash of pain, joy, regret, longing, and relief in a span of a few seconds. This episode was a sweet spot of writing, acting, directing, and (clearly) music. Just brilliant.
Yes! I've written essays about this episode! It's fantastic. Best part: I can't find any reference to the writer mentioning any great loss in his life. This was one of his first scripts for star trek, and he knocked it out of the park. I think I once described this song as " the sound of a life never lived"
Such a beautiful melody …. I do close my eyes and I am so happy and sad and the same time. It brings tears to my eyes. This episode is one of my favorites indeed.
The most beautiful piece of music on all of TNG, maybe all of Star Trek. Definitely both episodes sharing this are some of my favorites. The episode with Data's daughter also touches me.
What others don’t get when making this is the pure, beautiful complex simplicity and try to add too much. This arrangement is absolutely stunning. Arguably the most beautiful song ever made and this arrangement does it the right justice
Actually played this with full wind symphony in college. The composer, Jay Chattaway, is a WVU grad and it was a concert of his compositions. Such a wonderfully nice man!
Now I dedicate this song to the memory of my good friend Debbie McDonald really miss you. Rest in peace and now this song is for you. It’s called the inner light I think in heaven, you can hear it and I hope you enjoy it. Rest in peace love you amen. Hugs
Ditto.... I lost my fiancée to a drunk driver in 1995. She was The Love of my life. Irreplaceable! It's a long, lonely road, but I will walk it to the end. I know we'll meet again in the hereafter. A few decade's here is nothing compared to Eternity.
WurstCaseSzenario ; I hear ya! I look around this world, & I feel like I'm caught in one of those Star Trek episodes where they're in an alternative universe; everything look's the same, but the people are acting crazy. How do I get back to my own universe???😂😂😂
Is this an actual song? It is such a nice song. It should be given another name other than "The Inner Light Melody". Not everyone is a fan of Star Trek.

And it's sequel episode "Lessons". Both were very sentimental, seeing a very personal side of Picard.
TNGs best episode ....
"As long as you remember us, then we will have found life again..."
I lost my wife of 30 years 3 months ago, date and day. We loved this episode and especially this piece. I love you & miss you honey...rest in peace😭
I want this song playing at my funeral. That’s all I ask.
I'll add it to the play list for mine, along with Wander My Friends from BSG and Always Look On The Bright Side of Life
Tc Cv you’re not the only one.
I'm learning to play this song with a possibility of playing it for my Dad's funeral one day
Just found out Patrick Stewart himself has made the same request for his funeral.
That can be arranged. That and give us a copy of your sim/contacts. We will text everyone who came a "thank you" from your cellphone after. :-))
Finally the most pure version of Inner Light, evokes a welling up in my heart!
My grandson was born two days ago. When I hear 'Inner Light'...I think of him. I'm blessed and humbled.
Loved this when I first heard it on Star Trek TNG.
I loved when Picard and Darren played this on “Lessons”. I cried when she made it back to the ship!
This song brings me peace and tranquility like no other song does.

I loved that one too. So bittersweet. I'm so grateful that storyline sees a spiritual successor in Picard (the series).

Beautiful folklore tune and back story....Picard's lived full life in that 25 min period.
The Inner light has reminded me that both of my parents are happy back in each other's arms in the afterlife, and will be forever be missed.
This is why I absolutely love Star Trek the next generation it has so much emotion and good characters 😪😪😪makes me wanna cry over and over

I love this song and episode of startrek

Best episode ever!
It's even more incredible, when you realise it wasn't even created by a "professional" writer, it was sent in by a fan, with no changes made to it.
@@hampshirewanderer5078 Awesome trivia - thanks for sharing.
This piece brings tears to my eyes.
So beautiful
Like Picard, I weep for the family (wife and children) I never had. Quite a lonely life....
Agreed , I second that .

@@smc1942 I feel for your loss, but I like your mindset. I believe your patience will be worth it.
Heart breaker! Lol
The original comment struck a chord with me. The life of a confirmed single person can be lonely and filled with regret.
Love this. Beautiful music, and who ever gave it a thumbs down sucks!
Agree. Why would you even be here if you weren't seeking it out. That's the internet for you.
Beautiful version.
Beautiful music
The best arrangement of stng
this a very awesome job. i really like it
Magnificent, period.
beautiful
If I close my eyes, I feel like I'm flying! Like an eagle soaring high
few songs ever bring me to tears, this one did.
beautifully done man, thanks. so beautifully done it makes a grown man cry.
Why did I start crying the moment I heard the flute? :-(
This is so pretty. I got chills.
Non ci sono parole da dire...
Buon Ascolto.
No words to say...
Good listening...
Meravigliosa!! E' un episodio incredibilmente bello
wow great job
Beauty in song.
Play this at my funeral.
WurstCaseSzenario ;
I hear ya!
I look around this world, & I feel like I'm caught in one of those Star Trek episodes where they're in an alternative universe; everything look's the same, but the people are acting crazy.
How do I get back to my own universe???😂😂😂
Muy bueno, extraordinario :-)
Im learning to play this song on a native American flute I built. Its in the key of A. Wish me luck.
Try Tin Whistle of E and G chord.
10-18-23 This was found and wholly enjoyed. 2:33 2:38
Looks like Q gave this one a thumbs down...what a pity.
I do suspect that there's the possibility of finding out the appropriate words to sing it! If it takes me a while to figure it out. I will!
I'm wondering where I can buy the sheet music for this arrangement. It is wonderful!
Who composed this song? It’s wonderful and that episode was voted best of all out of all the episodes.❤
The piano is better in the tng episode I think but it is very good
So beautiful! Where is this arrangement from? Is it the original from the series?
Star Trek the Next Generation - The Inner Light
Written by Jay Chattaway. I remember doing a concert in college when he was the guest conductor. He is such a down to earth, nice guy.
Is this an actual song? It is such a nice song. It should be given another name other than "The Inner Light Melody". Not everyone is a fan of Star Trek.
It does have another name, Picards Air, though that still references Star Trek, because it was done for Star Trek...
Just want a version without the bad piano

Excellent ‘Tin Whistle’ performance, but I hated the piano accompaniment!!!
