This was the personal project of Ted Turner, Founder of Turner Broadcasting Network, who personally wanted to produce and present both sides of the story in as dramatic and historically accurate (i.e. Without Hollywood) context. So that audiences could truly appreciate the sacrifices made at this battle to end slavery and preserve the Union.
For a Civil War film based on historical fact, yes, I'd have to agree. But my favourite Western from that era isn't likely to veer from The Outlaw Josey Wales.

Yes one of the strongest parts of the movie. For me strongest moment was when general Armistead was asking about general Hancock, his old friend while he was dying. I saw a lot of war movies from different eras but this scene is written to my heart. Even for me as a non-american citizen it was a very strong scene as well as whole movie is unforgettable. Very good story (history is best scenarist) and perfect acting. Martin Sheen was incredible as Robert Lee aswell as Tom Berenger as general Longstreet.

When brother fights against his brother, father against his son and yet numerous other kinsmen with unforgettable savagery launch headfirst into the smoke and musket fire of their family who just happen to be a hundred yards away and wearing a different uniform.
Best civil war film ever.. Glory was good and Gods and Generals was ok but nothing like Gettysberg... It shows true heroes from both sides.. The battle scenes are well filmed and moving.. I named my son after Joshua after Chamberlain who is one of my heroes

O am an ex civil war reenactor from the Army of Virginia UK , I have deep respect to both sides of the conflict brave men, Gettysburg showed in a powerful way that raw courage that the men in blue or grey endured.
All that Bloodshed, Bravery, Honor and now everlasting Glory... personally I find this film to be one of the best of all times and this piece of art of music captures it all for me, hope we can all learn from this sacred movie, best regards everyone and stay safe, from Israel.
I enjoyed being in the reenactments (130th) that made up much of the scenery of Pickett's Charge...the 30th Va Co B has a lot of footage...and some cameos by Bruce Drummond, Richie Sarna and the rest of the crew.
Thank you dear Philip for your most important work, it is thanks to people such as yourself that we today as well as future generations are able to see how this battle was laid out, thank you for passing this living history.

I get choked up at some points in some movies. That's just what Cancerians do. We are a sensitive lot. This movie has so many of those moments that it is hard to pinpoint the best. Let's just say that I have watched Gettysburg 5 times since 1993, and each time I get more than a little choked up.
I'm a Taurus, and I do get the feelings of many emotions from this music. I thank skater, Todd Eldredge, for using it in his program, a while back. Never had heard of it. So, I bought the movie, and had the additional high of viewing it, particularly the performance of Jeff Daniels. He brought me to tears.
It is 2012, and this music still brings tears to people's eyes. This music really brings out the sadness and chaos that was Gettysburg. And it still applies to today's events. It was 9/11 yesterday. And yet this song still echoes among its viewers. Rest in peace, for the fallen.
I like this song. In this part of the movie the two brothers look at each other eye to eye and hug each other. Thankful their still alive and have each other.

No wonder no one wants to serve the army anymore, because there's no chivalry. Now I see why General Custer was si much against modern warfare at that time (Gatling guns, armored trains). Yes Mr. Turner....the third and last one in this trilogy "The Last Full Measure", has got to be made into a movie! It could be another "Gone With The Wind", of the 21 Century.
