    In 1999, Gold was the consumer film. Vericolor was the "professional" film. From a user's perspective, the key difference was that Vericolor was "ripened" prior to deliver to retailers so that it was at its peak of color accuracy when sold, whereas Gold was delivered some months prior to its peak to allow for delay in unrefrigerated sales and further delay in use by the purchaser. Do you think Kodak worries about such matters these days when you pay extra for Portra?

    Ribsy, superb photography. I miss owning a TLR. I used to own and love a Yashica-Mat. I learned serious photography on TLR cameras. I hope to get a Mamiya C220 or C330 in the future. Always enjoy watching your videos and find them relaxing and creative inspiration. Thanks!!!

    It was great to see your interaction with the park visitors. You managed to get all sorts of people to model for you. The shots were beautiful and the expired film looks great. I end up using expired film by default. I overbuy film, don't get out enough, thus expired film that I won't throw out. I shoot mostly B & W which seems to be quite stable over time.

    12:55 'a lot of people move there for 5 years then have to get the f out of there'. Funny, as a Brit, I lived in New York for just over three years (and had to leave but would have loved to stay longer) but a common rule of thumb among other friends was that five years was the point that non-native New Yorkers either reached their limit and left or stayed and stayed forever. That was true of almost everyone I knew in the city.

    great to see Izzie on youtube! I do like trying out expired film, even if it's 50+ years expired. it doesn't always turn out well. it doesn't always turn out at all. but sometimes you get some really cool photos. my opinion is that it's the storage conditions that really makes or breaks film, not the amount of time.

    • @ribsy
      @ribsy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nice video. I miss those films. Kodak had two 400 speed MC (moderate color) films at around that time (80-90’s). The Ektacolor was far more blue (similar to the Ektachrome) and then the Gold MC which was a saturated gold/yellow. According to the box you listed I believe you had the Ektacolor MC.
    It’s funny how people pay so much for these old expired films today. We threw or gave them away if they were expired past a year or so. If I had only used my expired crystal ball.

    Talking about expensive expired film, try looking for some Aerochrome. I nearly spat the dummy when I saw some in 4x5 a week or so ago. It was bad enough in 35 and 120, but 4x5 really took the cake. It was 10 sheets at a cost of about $600 per shot!!! I'd expect my subject to be gold plated for a shot like that!! :P And, the grain would all have to be the same size and spread smoothly across the film!! Bad enough chasing down pack film let alone seeing aerochrome going for the price it does. Crazy!! Imagine spending all that money only to find out none of it even worked. Whoever it was that was selling seems to have pulled it offline, but there's still some crazy expensive aerochrome for sale.

    That one stop per decade rule is founded on absolutely nothing. There are a lot of variables to how much film degrades, so it is pretty much impossible to know how much speed a film still has. The faster the film to begin with the higher degradation, the warmer the storage the higher degradation, moisture also attributes to degradation, so does changing conditions. So basically the only way to confidently say how to rate an expired film is to do tests. Takes a few frames off the roll and an extra development operation, but especially if I have a few rolls of the same film from the same storage situation I always do it, because it highly increases the quality of results.

    • @ribsy
      @ribsy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Totally agree BUT assuming the film has kept up, the rule hasn’t failed me! 😃
