Just passed a 6g test on friday at my college. I couldnt have done it with out welding tips & tricks. I learn a hell of alot from your videos. Thanks jody
I am Currently a student hear at the University of New Mexico in Gallup. I just started my career in the welding trade I have learned a lot by watching your videos. helps me a lot. burning them rods and just learning is awesome and fun.
Thanks a lot Jody. I have been waiting for this video for a year. There are others on the net, which I appreciate, but your commentary and production quality make your videos truly stand alone as viable teaching instruction and not just aid. Thank you. James
I’ve watched this video at least 15 times since it was first published. Best optics of the weld puddle anywhere, period. I’ve found no one else on TH-cam that comes even close...
Love your work Jody from a pipeline T/a. Most of our welders finish up on the side of the bevel. Last guy I T/A'd for was in his 70s. Never touched the juice for him ever. He was good 👍
In my opinion you and Steve Bleile, are the best welders than i see in TH-cam, so i don't understand why you receive 513 fingers down ? Thanks a lot for your videos, for me you are great. Juan Carlos from Belgium( Europe ).
Mate, I'm a senior citizen of the welding fraternity and now live in the US. I did my apprenticeship in the UK, where I worked large construction (think 8 inch steel, all low hydrogen) Then specialized in Tig and worked on many stainless pieces for nuclear work, dressed as a flour grader in a clean room. I additionally did my asme 9 test piece for the mild steel side of things and a bunch of other things. After Europe, I went to Australia where my qualification became welder first class. I've recently got back into it and have to say, I thoroughly enjoy your vid's. There's a lot of bad advice out there, as I'm sure you know, but without appearing like I'm kissing butt, your vid's are great. Keep 'em coming.
Watching this video seriously helped me pass the final welding exam in college back in December. I know it says 6G but our final exam was 5G where we had to use the hand torch to bevel the pipe that was sitting in jack stands and grind down the bevels on the pipes and put a landing on them as well and the instructor would fit them together and thanks to watching the videos that you posted really had helped me.
this guy and his videos are great and very informative he explains everything very smooth and precise, I remember learnin a lot of basics just off visual putting on a hood and watching my veterans and then try to mimic their moves. the best practice is to keep practicing and take advice from any and everyone with knowledge and experience
I've just got a job working with coded welders and I've gotta learn along the way...your vids are excellent for seeing close up whats happening..thank you
@johnwilkins if you fit the pipe correctly you should be able to push your rod into the gap and just drag your root. If you start to notice the keyhole is getting bigger ( gap too wide, heat too hot, land too thin ) that's when you have to start whipping it a bit like he does a lot in this video. I never have to whip when I'm doing a test, because I make sure my fit up is perfect. If your going to do your best weld for a test you have to start out with a perfect fit. That's half the battle.
Clifton Williams true. In school I was taught by my instructor who learned from one of the best welders out there (forgot his name but he wrote books) and the 6010 and 6011 you oscillate in circles or whip back and forth like in this video. You don't just drag it like the 7014 or the 7018.
I don't weld that much but I enjoy the videos just the same. Good camera angles, and great explanations of the work being performed. Much appreciated Jody.
Good Morning I been welding for like 3 years I been welding GTAW Tig Welding.I want to get back and start welding Stick welding thank you for the video I learn alot from this guy he is a master when it comes to welding.
Thanks for this video! I'm currently preparing to do the 6G test right now and I'm finding it very useful. It's worth pointing out that in Europe we use lower amps (about 60 amps average) due to the 50 Hz of our electricity supply instead of 60 Hz in America.
can you explain why the different frequency can alter the amperage? are you using transformer welder? with inverter welders the output should be the same
@@massimo79mmm Blimey! I posted this comment 8 years ago! At the time I was using a transformer welder which wasn't particularly well regulated. I've since invested in an inverter welder which is much better.
TEIS3210 Exactly! I'm in school to become a welder and it is more than just 'melting metal together'. Definitely requires skill, patience, and practice.
Exactly like I’m in school for welding and a lot of people are like welding is boring all you do is sit there and go bzzzzz and they just don’t know what it’s really like lol I have had a teacher tell me it’s boring😂
Helped me a lot, I'm not taking this test but it will help me in my welding class, Was struggling on how to weld two circles together, This helped a lot thanks man.
Cool video, really like that you've got the camera in close like to show what the puddle is actually doing. I'm 6 months from graduating from college for welding and plan to stick weld when I'm done, I'll probably get certified in the next 3/4 weeks, and stick open root is probably the 2nd hardest thing to do, next to TIG open root
Nice to see some one that knows what he is doing, and showing people the right way to weld . I have been certifide for 27 years know with the same certs you are showing. I am also a cwi.
You sir are an American hero! Thanks to you tons of ppl can feed their family and make the money they've always wanted! Ive bought your products (and caint wait to get some of those shirts) to help you continue helping others and myself. Best series on youtube! 👏
Thank you for your help I just did the 6G test and passed. Would like to tell you I've been steel fitter/welder, supervisor and also a welding inspector (almost 35 years in steel work) but I never tried to do this test. Thanks for your excellent example.
All down to basics when welding with MMAW, all the angles.. Man i really prefer MMAW to GTAW and GMAW, there's just so much more focus on a perfect weld.. Consistency is absolute key!! Keep up the good work brother!! Strict follower of your video's.. we are the 0.1%
Simple solution how to handle too big key hole is using a remote controller.....i use it always. We in Finland are in use almost without exception the remote control to adjust the amps. Awesome videos and will definitely help many novice welders around the world.
I personally dont push and pull on stick; i do cursive. On MIG, the pushing and pulling technique is the overall best and my personal choice. Great videos! Keep up the amazing craftsmanship. 👍👍👍
I have been welding for a long time I haven't done much 6010 root. Mostly Tig root. The specs that you gave were on the money. 3/32 gap and land great great video. Oh yeh I got the job...
Your videos help a lot. I work with a welder, and it always seems like he is hesitant to show me certain things. Especially the root pass. Maybe I'm competition to him, because I learn very fast.
Great instructional video. Ive taken my share of 6G test but don't remember being aloud to adjust my amperage once the tester checked my settings at the leads. 305G/SA200.
great video Jody! way different from how we do it in the shop where i work. we have a larger opening and use a hand controller for the amps, also we weave the whole opening and don't keyhole that much. very interesting to see how you guys over the pond are doing it
Thanks for these videos! I am a young welder just starting out in the business, I have TIG certification, and within the next month im going to take stick welding aswell! So all i wanted to say is thanks for these tips and tricks videos =) Cheer's from Sweden!
I like to see you us some of the UA test specs, that's what all Union pipe welders will be testing to. Just try to remember to touch a little on the thickness of the root and cap reinforcement heights. You are not allowed more than 1/8 th of an inch on the root and cover passes reinforcement height. that's an automatic rejection even for the smallest spot of over. Great videos I really enjoy them.
Bad Jody! No respirator. Gotta teach the youngins from the get go. Great vid as always. You have made me such a better welder. I thank you for that sir!
we watch your videos in class! They are super helpful! I spend endless nights watching videos and reading. I love how you just weld with one hand nonchalantly :) Hope one day our paths cross so I can thank you personally!
Great information. Although I'm not taking any tests, the knowledge gained here is invaluable. I look forward to your weekly posts. Keep up the great work. Cheers Richard
Thanks for the video! Helped out so much in the way you held the stinger and rod. I could never get my body situated right on 6g and then I came across your channel and video which made it so much easier! I need more practice, but at least now I have a great foundation to work from.
Excellent video! Can you do a video on the downhill 6g root. I went to take a test at a yard in Louisiana and they wanted 6010 downhill root and 7018 uphill fill and cap. Once again great video, I learn so much from these videos and than you greatly for all the knowledge you give to the young future welders like myself.
Those two lengths of pipe are about the same length that you would have with a G6 test, and they overheat because the pipe is so short , which is something that would not happen the job site. Good video, pipe welders are the real deal
I'm 16 and still and high school and In only 6 months I'm now structural certified got 3rd place in regionals and now in 2 months I take my pipe test. So hopefully I pass that as well! Wish me luck! Btw I'm a junior!!
luis nieto Stay with it nieto. Go to the nearest UA Plumbers and Pipefitters local and tell the business agent what your doing now and what you hope to do in the future. Ask him lots of questions. If you can pass their UA tests you can make very good pay. Rule #1). Don't even think about getting married until you got about $150,000 saved and then never tell the wife you got it. ; ). Good luck
I'm getting my certification at a local tech school but I've been stuck on 6G E6010 root pass at 75amps for almost 3 weeks now. I had no problems with 2G and 5G. I can cap it fine just the root I'm having trouble with. I'm going to try these tips when I test today
Blake Richa93 Keep after it! I teach at a tech college, and for a joint like this I have students start with a lower amperage, then once they "get it" they move the amps up. I teach that with a couple of different joints in different processes, so that when they get to the pipe tests they are used to thinking like that. Practice on plate in 3G if that helps. Let us know how you do!
iw63boomer I appreciate it! The day of that comment I didn't get the root right but the next day I did and it passed the bend test finally. Currently on 2G tig pipe now which I'm doing good with. Just a little bit of undercut I have to clean up on my last cap at the top.
Blake Richa93 Good for you, Blake! Congratulations! I think that 2G is a more difficult joint than 5g .. but that is just my opinion! It sounds like you have some real skills happening - Good for YOU! Keep it up! Now! Comes the hard part! Getting the job and working in industry. But you know, I am sure you will do just fine! Keep us posted on your progress! Let us know when you pass that 2G!
Awesome video and instructor! The best of the best...sir, one question: When are you posting the video of the hotpass, fillers and cap on this 6" pipe? Better yet, a complete 2" schedule 80 pipe, from rootpass to capping...on a 6g. I really need to pass this test. Thanks so much for sharing your talent and knowledge.
Just a little more of a tip , start your welding of the root at your 3 & 9 o'clock tacks going to 12 . Heat travels up and that will eliminate the eating out at the top . Plus it will have you all heated up for the bottom which will give you more of a chance for getting the right push thru .
Get Jody I'm a big fan of your videos.you have helped me tremendously.thank you!!.I was wondering if you could do a video on 2g pipe I'm having trouble with the cap pass.maybe you could show how you position your body and how you hold the rod in the stinger it would help me allot like the rest of your videos...thank you.!!!
I've learned a lot from you. My only complaint is I find myself wondering exactly what machine your using. Most of your videos show a glimpse of the machine though.
gonna run one of these tomorrow for my cert. good info on amperage in correlation to your keystone and where the limit is. also really like the positioning you have might try it out tomorrow.
You ain't got to be the best one, just be a good one! I dealt with a similar coupon where the gap was too big, but I dealt with it and passed the bend test and got my cert! You should definitely do a downhill tutorial!!
I don't know how you can whip that rod like that honestly. I'd probably lose control and blow through that root lol. Myself, I like to just run the rod and let it blow the keyhole out around the rod. 3/32 gap, 3/32 land. nothing against your style, just pointing out that everyone has their own style and technique, and that not everyone can do that same technique. looks good and keep up the good work :)
BEST 6G ROOT PASS I'VE SEEN. JODY, YOU GOT MY RESPECTS. LOVE YOUR VIDEOS, VERY SATISFYING, LIKE WATCHING KID KANE WELD BUT WITH THE TEACHING DIALOGUE. YOU'RE THE BEST ON TH-cam. DOWN AND DIRTY AND BEAUTIFUL MY FRIEND!! WOULD LIKE TO MEET YOU SOMEDAY AND GO THRU A DAY OF WELDING LIKE WE'RE HAVING A PICNIC MEAL-O-METAL!! THANKS!!
I'm currently a student and I find your videos extremely helpful and look foward to buying the TIG finger on amazon. That is your product right? I want to make sure you get your money so you can continue to make extremely helpful videos.. keep em coming...
Well son you better get watching other ones. Because this guy is showing you to weld way to hot.. A inspector would never let that pass.. Too hot WAY TOO many spatters.. And he's out of the keyhole allowing it to cool down.. I am an old PIPELINE WELDER 71YRS. and I had a FRONT END WELDING INSPECTOR S TICKET..
Jody do you use a respirator when your welding outside of your videos. I find that even if don't have my respirator with the p100 filters my throat get shore like a flu. Or if i am doing any welding with argon gas i get tired without the filters. Love your welding videos. Helping me a lot being a first year up here i Canada for how to take a different look at things not shown in school
Best pieces of advice I received regarding root passes with 6010 1. All the fire and light should be on the other side of the workpiece. There should be no 6010 spatter on the outside of the pipe 2. Keep it dead center and all ways watch the edges consuming both landings. 3. Don't f*** up xD
I've been using a side to side motion and it is working great for my roots. Great penetration. I'm just curious is it a problem that I use this motion?
what ever works for you is the correct answer to your question, BUT if your fit is right ( proper land, bevel, and gap ) you shouldnt have to do much movement at all. I usually push it in there and just watch the keyhole and speed up or slow down accordingly. I find when the gap is too wide or the land too thin is when I have to start moving the rod around a bit. Hope I helped good luck welding
Great video very informative, the company I'm going to test for is similar but they want us to run the root pass going downhill with 2" schedule 40 pipe. Can you post a video doing so? Also the fill and cap using 6010 or 6011 all down hill in 6g position. I can weld in 7018 uphill all day but going down hill with 6010/6011 is really kicking my butt.
i was trained to go up hill and doing so I can't burn a rod if my life depended on it can you demonstrate down hill on a 5G,6G or vertical plate etc....
martin mac I'm in the same boat I've been told up hill period etc...trianed that way welded that and I can't seem to weld down hill now, when I 1st started down hill was easy now it's like what happened to me.
hey love the video very helpful was wondering if you can do a video of a 6g test schedule 80. running 6010 uphill for root fill and cap i havent been able to find any videos for 6010 cap pass uphill
Jody just gotta say one thing; that old saying "those who cant do, teach" definitely does NOT apply to you. Great videos thanks. You are a welding jedi 👍
I hear you Kristof. I don't understand how someone can teach something but not know how to do the work themselves ? I really don't know, any thoughts as to why? Jim
Would you say that the keyhole towards the end of the tack at 1:33 is about right, or getting big? I'm not much of a welder, nor do I weld pipe, but I sometimes weld gaps, and if I was welding that, my instinct would be that I would be about to totally lose the puddle and burn through. Towards the beginning of the tack, it looks fine, but then it seems to grow... and grow... and grow...
I would say at 1:33 that the keyhole was starting to get a little big but still manageable. I would not feel like I had to bail out yet. just a little more whip action and maybe make small ovals
***** Tig is better but impractical for outdoor use(wind blows sheilding gas away) pipelines and oilfeild usually weld stick. Tig is usually used for in food service or other industries where contamination would be a problem
***** Base metal material, Diameter, Thickness and the type of piping system are all contributors in which process will be used for the root pass. In the power and petrochem industries, you will Tig most, if not all root passes.
Hello I've been watching your videos and they are very helpful. Im working on my wrist to start on tig welding . Specially on a 2inch pipe . Stick rod is what i do ass a Rig welder but tig welding is a little different. Thank you.
Your Videos do help alot. Thanks Alot. Ive purchased the Tig Finger, Havent had the opportunity to use it, But im sure I will soon. God Bless and keep on
great video and very helpful, am currently trying to get coded up in 6g fcaw having trouble getting the root in not quite full pen coming of my start stops and seem to panic when the keyhole opens out to much , using a filarc 2,5 mm 7018 rooting rod around 70 amps with a 2.5 gap and the same for the root face 3mm topside allowing for closure , not to sure whether to use a slight dragging motion overhead ,whipping side to side ,push straight in or whip up and and hold down ,any advice would be much appreciated ,many thanks............
Are you still planning on welding the rest of this test example? I know you have another example of 6" with 7018, but it'd be great to see the 7018 hotpass, if possible. Thanks Jody.
the technique around 6:30... you do that (make swirls) to close a big gap especially at the top of the pipe. Bottom of pipe requires more of a whip waaaaay out of the puddle of a U-shaped movement .... Cheers!
Just passed a 6g test on friday at my college. I couldnt have done it with out welding tips & tricks. I learn a hell of alot from your videos. Thanks jody

This process is to close root..but dirty root good enough for ground pipe ...welders should never leave the puddle

There is also the boilermakers.

I would like to see a video of the down hand process done on 6010 open root
Wow that brings back some memories!!!! been away from welding for awhile...
Awesome video and instructor! The best of the best...sir, one question:
When are you posting the video of the hotpass, fillers and cap on this 6" pipe?
Better yet, a complete 2" schedule 80 pipe, from rootpass to capping...on a 6g.
I really need to pass this test.
Thanks so much for sharing your talent and knowledge.
Thank you so much for posting your videos. They were invaluable in helping me pass the 6g test. Again thank you so much!!
Dang Jody, you make that so easy! Nice explanation and great video work.
Fred Miller..
Fred Miller with the last name of Miller you had better be a great welder your self.
This video really help me passed my test also the 1 inch structural welding test thanks for your video ur the man
Got mad respect for u school u finesse that root pass big bro keep dropping more videos
Might be helpful??? No that was extremely helpful! Haha I love that I can see your form and that the camera is that zoomed in, keep the videos coming!
Waiting for the 7018.. You make things look way easier than they really are..
You ain't got to be the best one, just be a good one! I dealt with a similar coupon where the gap was too big, but I dealt with it and passed the bend test and got my cert!
You should definitely do a downhill tutorial!!
+Crimsonhead ...compared to this..V-down is very easy....
Excellent help, I always come to get advice from you videos.. Thanks alot 👍💪
Hey Jody make a video with the root 6010 and hot pass fuller and cap you got the best welding video's on youtube
I'll be taking my 6G pipe test soon at work. 8018 3/32" root, 8018 1/8" fill, under navy standard.
You are my spirit and my favorit master . . You like my father in welding... Thanks sure. . 🔥🔥🇮🇩❤️
THANKS for the video...I will be taking this test next year...gonna practice up bigtime for it.
best instructional video ive seen. thanks for the tips. really really helpful
Best video out there on this procedure. Way to save er at the end there.
Best pieces of advice I received regarding root passes with 6010
1. All the fire and light should be on the other side of the workpiece. There should be no 6010 spatter on the outside of the pipe
Great video man. Absolutely loved your work. Keep posting.
hey love the video very helpful was wondering if you can do a video of a 6g test schedule 80. running 6010 uphill for root fill and cap i havent been able to find any videos for 6010 cap pass uphill
Jim
You painted the boom without us?! Good video Jody
@@tylerh7647 Golden welds we normally will use Tig for the root.
God Bless and keep on
great video and very helpful, am currently trying to get coded up in 6g fcaw having trouble getting the root in not quite full pen coming of my start stops and seem to panic when the keyhole opens out to much , using a filarc 2,5 mm 7018 rooting rod around 70 amps with a 2.5 gap and the same for the root face 3mm topside allowing for closure , not to sure whether to use a slight dragging motion overhead ,whipping side to side ,push straight in or whip up and and hold down ,any advice would be much appreciated ,many thanks............
hi there ! the video is amazing and you weld very good.I wanna know how many passes you do for a complete pipeline welding.
Are you still planning on welding the rest of this test example? I know you have another example of 6" with 7018, but it'd be great to see the 7018 hotpass, if possible. Thanks Jody.
The problem I've been having is the keyhole is opening up and I can't get my puddle to fallow. Very frustrating.
the technique around 6:30... you do that (make swirls) to close a big gap especially at the top of the pipe. Bottom of pipe requires more of a whip waaaaay out of the puddle of a U-shaped movement .... Cheers!
