    This is probably the most important cultural discussion NOT being raised by anybody. Ideology and idolatry, narrow-mindedness in the name of a (false) belief in one’s own righteousness, tough-guy talk without the tough-guy morality...     Yes! A good man must treat a woman like a lady to be truly good. That's why nudity in film is so egregious, especially in rape scenes. Dont make the hero root for the woman to lose her clothes, and dont make us, the audience who shoukd not enjoy the rape scene, root for her to lose her clothes either

      Klavan does not understand Don Quixote. He his description of it is the modern telling of it. Don Quixote isn’t just a madman he is also quite sane and admirable. This is made clear thought the novel.

    I am Hispanic and Christian . Read Don Quijote as a child , also Raymond Chandler . Never though to put them together , but now , looking at you , I realized the points of contact between characters and cultures , transcending times to prove the commonality of human experience.     I love both films. Casablanca for its story and performances…Citizen Kane for its filmmaking and performances.
    I can watch either at any time…I won’t argue that Casablanca is incredible, but I WILL argue that Citizen Kane is the most complete piece of filmmaking and no film has surpassed it. And I find it very watchable because there is so much to learn each time…

    Seriously, you ought to teach a writing course, Mr Klavan. BTW, has the Daily Wire branched into taking submissions for works of fiction. There's so many good stories and writers of stories whose work will never make publication because of woke ideology dominating the publishing business.

    I don’t really expect you to see or read this, Andrew, but just in case you do, have you read Nelson Demille? The Hero of several of his books is John Corey. He seems to be a bit like Marlowe. If you haven’t read his books you’re missing out. Your latest book is scheduled to be shipped in a week or so.

    My understanding is that Don Quixote was the first novel where the characters changed over time. Both the Don and Sancho became different persons in effect changing places in the social order as the novel unfolds.

I am a very slow and fundamental thinker, but if we sat down and talked about some very small things that you might have overlooked on your swift journey (in your case swift is perfectly justifiale) I'd like to know if they are important to you.

    This Bruckner character signed a petition in support of Roman Polanski, calling for his release after Polanski was arrested in Switzerland in relation to his 1977 charge for drugging and _graping_ a 13-year-old girl.
    Somehow, I can't imagine Philip Marlow supporting the likes of Roman Polanski.
    In fact, Polanski would have been a rather dark villian in any Raymond Chandler novel.

    Ye Tate is trying and he has some good points. But he’s an actor, he’s overplaying the stereotype. When these youngsters get to 30-35 they see beyond the frivolous hyper-masculine masquerading of Tate.

    Since Klavan is never wrong, I’ll assume the has never seen the greatest film, Gone With the Wind. It features the greatest tough guy, Captain Rhett Butler (Clark Gable) and the most beautiful woman, Scarlett O’Hara (Vivian Leah). If I am being to generous, explain yourself Gandalf.

      Rhett Butler wasn't the greatest tough guy. He shagged prostitutes and avoided signing up. The great performance from Clark Gable probably made the character more charismatic and appealing.

      That's not art's fault. It's like when people say "life is art" in their stoner logic moments. Obviously Andrew's description here that art is a mere reflection of life is much closer to true than that, but that doesn't stop people from latching onto the half-baked version.
