Joe Lynn Turner's REAL opinion about his time in DEEP PURPLE!

  • Joe Lynn Turner joined Ritchie Blackmore to front Rainbow in the early 80s. Following his 3 album stint with the group, Joe faced a number of options next... Foreigner, Bad Company and Deep Purple! In this short clip, Joe talks about those days, from singing on jingles, trying out with Mick Jones in Foreigner, being asked to join Bad Company and then receiving the call to hook up with his favourite group of his youth - Deep Purple! But not just any iteration of the band, he was lead singer alongside Ritchie Blackmore, John Lord, Roger Glover and Ian Paice! Here Joe talks about that first session with them, his thoughts on the album he recorded 'Slaves and Masters' and how important the other members of Purple felt he was at that time.

Slaves and Masters is highly underrated. It really is a very fresh album with directions the band never took before. It’s controversial to many, but there’s no denying that Deep Purple is a band that’s pretty much known for changing their sound. Tracks like Fire in the Basement, The Cut Runs Deep, Wicked Ways are incredible hard-hitting tracks with incredible playing by everyone. Even the more pop-based tracks are undeniable not bad and have incredible melodies. Joe always has had a voice that brings out the melody in any song tremendously and I think personally Slaves and Masters is one of the greatest albums to come out of the 90s

I had both Fandango albums. They were pretty good. I had the vinyl albums.
But I believe even back then he was using Joe Lynn Turner.
      It's kinda funny.
I saw the Rainbow/Pat Travers co-headlining concert and Joe came out for one song with his own guitar strapped on, and started dry humping it like he was having sex with it and Ritchie left the stage as long as Joe had his own guitar on.
Ritchie didn't like it much when singers tried to upstage him.
(Whereas, when Garth Brooks was in his heyday?
He told ALL of his band members to try to upstage him every night.
      Rather than feel threatened?
Garth believed that it would push him to give his best show every night so no one would be able to upstage him.)
I found it hard to watch anybody else when Ritchie was in full Ritchie Blackmore guitar wizard mode.
He has this Charismatic stage presence when he's got his Strat strapped on it's hard to even notice anyone else.
I found it rather stunning to discover that, in his very earliest days on stage, Ritchie had such stagefright that he would hide backstage and just play from the wings.
His front man at the time, Screaming Lord Sutch, would grab Ritchie's guitar by the neck and drag Ritchie out on-stage.
That's how terrified Ritchie used to be.
But seeing him live with Rainbow?
You'd never have guessed Ritchie had EVER had stage fright.
He always seemed fully in command of the stage to me.

*Slaves And Masters* was a good album, not a great one. However, I definitely do agree that it is a major honor for Joe Lynn Turner to have been the glue that held that amazing lineup together for that one album and those couple of years. And there were some really good songs on it, especially "King Of Dreams," "The Cut Runs Deep," "Fire In The Basement," "Breakfast In Bed" and "Too Much Is Not Enough." This album only hit #87 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart, failing to go Gold. It's too bad. It deserved much better.
On a side-note, I can't say I'm surprised that JLT nearly joined Foreigner. I always thought his voice sounded very much like Lou Gramm (another Italian from the East Coast), except even more powerful. This makes perfect sense considering that Ronnie James Dio left Rainbow after Richie Blackmore told him that he wanted the band to sound more like Foreigner. 🙂

But at the time he was afraid of his managers. They didn't want him to leave [Survivor] and he didn't dare to get into a fight with them." And back in the day, the band had reached out to Paul Rodgers about his replacing Ian Gillan, and Glenn Hughes was actually brought on board with the understanding that he'd be singing with Rodgers. Things didn't pan out that way, of course, as Bad Company sprung up, and well, Purple didn't do too badly with David Coverdale. We can still wonder, though.

  • @salvanncentral
    @salvanncentral ปีที่แล้ว +9

The problem he had were that firstly, he couldn't sing the classics. Totally butchered them. Secondly, even Ritchie mentioned that Joe was trying to change Purple to be morelike Aerosmith and their ilk at the time. It was like :tehy are doing this and so should we". He was always going to be an outsider. Great lyricist tho. Great ballad and pop singer but notstrong enough to be a consistant rock singer. His style fitted Rainbow's direction at the time perfectly.
Finally, there is also a reason why he was never considered for the latest Rainbow reunion. Apparently he was talking to people and setting up deals. Rainbow is Blackmore's love child. And in case he didn't notice over the years, Ritchie does things his way.

@Simon England I am only going by past interviews. Joe tried to change DP into an American rock band. Lord, Paice and Glover did not. They were a British rock band and stayed that way after Blackmore left. That's why in my opinion the albums that came after all have that dated Gillan Glover sound.
Even Ritchie implied he got sick of Joe trying to copy other bands.
Given his actions with purple and his plans for a Rainbow reunion "extravaganza", I get the impression that he was more interested in cashing in. But that's my opinion.
Ritchie hates the industry. According to Colin Hart, Rainbow with JLT got as big as Ritchie wanted it to be and I guess his latest reformation was deliberately low key and small for a reason. No fuss, just a bit of fun for the fans.
There's another story that he and Coverdale were looking to do something after Jon's death, but then managers got involved and it became complicated. That's how he rolls. The proof for mine is in the pudding where Joe did not go on to have the success he craved. Joe needed Ritchie and Purple more than they needed him.

    • @salvanncentral

As a lifelong Purple fan and someone who gave every MK lineup a chance, to me 'Slaves & Masters' was easily one of their worst records. It hardly even sounded like Purple and more like a mid 80's Journey record, primarily due to the production sound. No idea whose idea it was to make it sound like that but even for 1990 it sounded very outdated, so grunge had nothing to do with its lack of success. In comparison, the following 'The Battle Rages On' sounded like a return to form, both production and songwriting-wise.

I hated that album. I won't even put it on the shelf with the rest of my Purple collection. My brother and I call it Mistakes and Disasters.
But if you think that was bad, check out a B-side from that era called "Fire, Ice and Dynamite". It difficult to imagine a song that wasn't good enough to be on that album but this one holds that distinction.

Couple of good songs, but meh. Much better when they went back to what they do best with Morse - Purpendicular is a great album.

I still remember buying it without even looking at the cover, getting it home, putting it on the turntable, and saying "WTH?!" when I heard a familiar voice that wasn't Ian Gillan. Lots of folks love this album, that's fine by me, but for my tastes, it was "Rainbow with Jon Lord and Ian Paice." "King of Dreams" and "The Cut Runs Deep" were the ones that caught my ear, and while I enjoyed "Fire in the Basement", it rather reminded me of an attempt at updating "Lazy". The rest of the album sounded like leftover material for a post-"Bent Out of Shape" release.
Now, where I'll give JLT some props is that I did see the band on the tour. When *Winger* left the stage, half the place emptied out, and I realized that we were in trouble. The opening, "Burn", was a rather nice surprise, and frankly, JLT looked pretty comfortable with the band -- after all, he'd played alongside two of 'em for some time! -- and thought he did justice to the material, including a really nice version of "Truth Hurts." The other bonuses were bits of "Hey Joe", "Hush", and even "Child in Time" in the middle of "The Cut Runs Deep" (if my poor memory serves after three decades).

I think it's a bit mixed up, but maybe Joe means he kept Blackmore glued to rock (with Rainbow), until the Perfect Strangers reunion in 1984.
We know that Ritchie was drawn to another kind of music, & that he eventually went for it with Candice Night in Blackmore's Night in 1997, after that reactivated (& short lived), Rainbow album & tour. Of course he did his best with DP until Gillan came back. Puts me in mind of Joey Cherone in Van Halen. 😐

However, imho, I feel JLT did a much better job filling in for DP on S&M then Ian Gillan did with the follow up album, The Battle Rages On. My understanding is Ritchie was the only one who wanted JLT on S&M. So when The Battle Rages On, was in the works, Ritchie was the only one still wanting JLT rather than Ian Gillan. Still respecting all the other members of DP, I have to side with Ritchie on this one. But thats just my opinion.

Slaves & Masters doesn’t work for me, not because of JLT. It was because of Ritchie’s heavy hand and the band didn’t sound very inspired. As far as I’m concerned, it really doesn’t sound much like them, save for a few Blackmore licks. King of Dreams is good. As far as I’m concerned, I believe the band was tired of Ritchie being the driving force and he was starting to become fed up with playing hard rock. In my humble opinion, JLT was the least of Slaves & Masters problems. Oddly enough, this lineup did sound great live.

Um, with the greatest respect for Mr T’s recollections: Perfect Strangers was 6-years before he was in the band so how could he have influenced its making? And what followed S&Ms was The Battle Rages On and Blackmore bailed shortly thereafter, so he can hardly take credit for keeping the band together. Yes, I know he claims Paice said it. Again with respect, every time you hear an interview with him it’s all about the implication that he was so great and saved or made the original bands better. He frequently says things like Rainbow “… had all the hits …” while he was in the band, when, if you check Billboard, they had one single that hit 40 on the charts,. Hardly big hits. The same with S&Ms, he has claimed he brought the relevance back to DP, when album sales, and popular opinion, suggest otherwise. Good luck to him, but his attempts to elevate himself by comparing himself favourably to his contemporaries always comes across as bitter, not to mention factually inaccurate. Ronnie James Dio was Rainbow, and Gillan, and to a lesser extent Coverdale/Hughes, were DP.

I think Joe is a good singer, not RJD, Gillan, Coverdale, and certainly not Hughes, but he, if I may use the term, seems to passively-aggressively try to raise himself by suggesting that he is better. Which is to say, he was taking a, perhaps apocryphal, statement by Ian to seemingly elevate himself in importance to the band. And as I also pointed out, it’s unfortunately a pattern he often follows, so it wasn’t a one-off and to be taken as something out of context.
