Of all the really great innings you can watch time and time again on TH-cam, two of them have been by Nathan Astle, one to save the first test in this series and one chasing a lost cause. Both of them, unfortunately, were against us! But they're a joy to watch from a naturally very gifted batsman.
Athers looks so young! I do feel a bit sorry for him, he was a decent England captain during a period before central contracts, Duncan Fletcher, Andy Flower etc and he really didn't have the players, so I was always surprised when England actually beat anyone.
He had the batting line-up, himself, Thorpe, Stewart were world class. His bowlers, although good, were inconsistent. Caddick, Gough, Headley, Cork weren't upto the mark to win crucial matches.
That drawn test was the longest gym session I have ever had, 3 hours in the gym glued to the TV as I had no TV at home at the time. Don't think anyone in the gym actually worked out that day.
No, no, mate. You mean South Africa at the Oval? We always give the Saffers a head start. It makes the series interesting ;) Having said that, I think we went a bit too far this time.
England were pathethic from 80s till 1999 then naseer hussain micheal vaughan changed test cricket but again they sometimes they were good in odi but again.very bad when they made 1st round exit in wc 2015 but it was eoin morgan who gave England gooseumps in odis and later made champion
I loved how Stewart rolled his bat often.. It was best style

Look how skinny Smithy is!
He was once skinny enough to keep wicket.
There's a bloke DM Mordecai uploading this series, session by session.

16:52 what was that??
Great video
and 5 years later Nathan Astle smashed England to all parts of the ground ... 222
England best tem in
Terrible showing from the Kiwis, something that was all too common at the time (and still is).
New Zealand was useless in this series.
