For me, one of the best things about FH 4 is how lived-in and alive the world felt. Even a few years after release I was discovering new little houses or back-roads. Edinburgh felt so lifelike and even the open countryside felt full and rich with detail. A massive contrast to FH5, which feels empty and featureless. For me, that's where FH4 shines, more so than any other FH other than FH2

I think Mexico is just as feature filled, it’s just bigger so feels less full for some reason. But fh5 has so do many little nooks and crannies-more than fh4 in my opinion.
Let’s meet back here three years into fh6’s lifespan when we’re all griping about it and reminiscing about fh5’s map 😂

I was a really socially awkward kid before FH4 but its the awesome map exploration, meetups, and festival playlist grinds with online people really helped me get used to interacting with people and being myself, so I'm forever grateful to FH4 for that :) The Hospital Records OST also got me into DnB forever changing my music taste for the better. FH4 is one of my favorite games of all time 👍

Which is odd to me and maybe it's just this generation of gamers... I'm slightly older (20s) and found voice chat to be WAY more prominent back in the late 2000's and early 2010s. Motorsport custom lobbies were near close to CoD with how busy the mics could be. You don't get that in any racing game today. I met many people on FM3/4 and GT5/6 - whereas for the past few years it seems people are mostly introvertive. That's actually why I have seen some people shift from console gaming to PC for sim racing. The community. People who don't like playing alone

At least in FH5 Hospital is still pretty good, shame the other stations aren't as good as they were in previous games.

Lining up for 5 or 6 wide highway races with randoms was the best memories I have of this game and I loved it. Making it to the other side first in your own customized expression of a car had a fulfilling feeling and I learned to respect peoples styles if I lost in a way I didnt irl or in other racing games. It led to great conversation in dm's sharing ideas and learning tuning when a car beat you and you wanted to know what the player had done to it. FH4 is on the mount rushmore.

Fh4 for me really pulled it together. Great Britain may have felt quaint but for me it was aggressive and fast. The roads felt real and well traveled. The range of cars was second to none and a joy to look at as well as drive. I loved the seasons including the snow as it gave wonderful photo opportunities and a sense of challenge to one’s favourite routes. It felt natural. I’ve just returned to playing it after getting bored with FH5 and realised that I was never bored playing FH4 I only stopped as I felt I needed to upgrade to FH5. @@racdude01 People do not like change, least not at first. It's awkward, it's uncomfortable, because it's outside what you're used to, you have to break your usual habits and understandings and try to learn something new. I mean, look at Minecraft and it's player base, every update people complain about changes, yet go on to eventually appreciate the changes with time as those changes become more natural as they go from uncomfortable newness, to the status quo.
Plus people voice negativity more than positivity. Someone who's having an issue with their car will voice that, someone who's having no issues with the same make and model wouldn't have the need to say "I'm not having any problems." Thus it seems like there's more negativity and hate, than there is positivity and love.

I started playing Horizon 4 right around COVID, when I was living in my grandparents' basement with my cousin while my family was getting our new house ready. By that point, season rewards were unlocked at 80%, a lot of the features were already in the game, and there was a community with a solid foothold enjoying the game. It was honestly one of the best times of my life, hanging out with my cousin, driving cars, and exploring the game.
I had moved back to the US a couple of years prior after living abroad for 8 years and through high school, I hadn't really made many friends; certainly not to the same level as the ones I had left behind. Picking up the game and feeling like I had walked into a party in full swing was a great way to escape the real world and make some friends, even if that friendship only lasted the length of our drive around the map.
To paraphrase the current top comment, the world really did have more soul than Mexico. I'm not sure if it's down to how H5 has massive swaths of open land that you can see right across or just a lack of buildings, but everything in Britain felt much more dense. There was a lot to see and explore even in a small area, and the abundance of low rock walls and trees flanking almost every road seemed to make the map bigger. I get the same feel when driving in the jungle in H5, but it can't quite balance out the desert to bring that same experience back.
The seasons as well were always one of my favorite parts of H4 and I'm one of the people who enjoyed winter as much as or more than summer. I'd take out a tuned Subie, the S1 Quattro, my own Lola T70 tuned for winter, or just have some fun and try to keep a road/track car under control at full throttle. To me, Mexico's seasons just don't bring enough variation and it kind of feels the same every time I log in.
It may just be that I'm seeing it through rose-colored glasses, but despite the bias that nostalgia brings, Horizon 4 really is the best of the series. Granted, it was my first Forza title and I don't have first hand experience with the other games, but if nothing else, it was my personal favorite.

Forza Horizon 4 was my first Forza and has had a special place in my heart. I live in northern England and holidayed often in amble side, the town on the north side of lake Windermere, and around the lake in general. It brings back memories of my family and my grandad whos no longer here, who I spent a lot of time with in the beautiful and scenic green country on these holidays. I think the game gets near to real life in the way that the rolling hills make you feel small and look never-ending as they dwarf your field of view. The driving on the winding roads you find up there (apart from the fact that they are far narrower) in contrast with the fast and straight motorways offer so much versatility in how you can drive. In addition to all the off roading that is possible there are so many ways in which you can experience the game. I love the setting and location but i might be a bit biased. I wonder what non-british people think about the location as i always find that northern England and Scotland to be a niche setting for a game and can't think of many games set there. Thanks for the video and hope you have a good one.

I bought FH4 off ebay a couple months ago and I absolutely LOVE the scenery- everything about all of it. I'm in Seattle and much of the game is like taking a drive up toward the Cascade Mountains.
They de-listed the game 2 days ago and nothing is missing for me. It's a great game if you want to visit a sunny forest or lakeside environment when, in real life, it is a massive downpour of rain.
I don't need the races (which are still there) or the Festival Playlist (which is gone). I like to just cruise at 150mph+ dodging traffic in my Ferrari 512tr with 700 HP or F40 with 634HP, drifting as I go. And the ability to drift in the dirt is really great, compared to Forza 7 (which is what I was used to).
I play Forza to drift at high speed and to explore the countryside (jumping the hills on the beach and going flying can be fun for a few minutes too).
I can't imagine why anyone would want to spend time in FH5 in Mexico, in comparison.

They did de-list it two days ago so the festival playlist is gone, but that makes no difference to me. That's not what I like about the game. I enjoy doing all the mods to increase horsepower, handling etc... choosing wheels, painting etc. You can adjust suspension settings, gear ratios, downforce from wings. You can increase tire diameter, width, track, reduce sidewall thickness, choose from stock, sport, race, rally rubber compound (and damper settings and ride height) etc... You can convert your car to AWD or put a V8 or V12 in it. Turbos, superchargers, etc...
All the same stuff you could do in Forza Motorsports 7.
FH4 is set in a beautiful forested area of Scotland with lakes, mountains, beaches, a waterfall, castles, churches, small towns, trains, and the city of Edinburgh to spend time exploring.
You can drift on the dirt forest roads or on the frozen lake in winter or on the beach where you can also jump off the sand dunes and go flying.
I like to explore while drifting at 150 MPH dodging the traffic in a 700 HP Ferrari 512tr or F40 or a 400 HP 288 GTO (painted blue of course). And the seasons change.

FH3 is one of the flattest, least characterful maps, but people pretend it's the highpoint. FH2's map is even more bland aside from Amalfi and a few other places.
FH4's map added a genuinely mountainous area, it added seasons, it was visually superior, had many more cars, better customisation, much much better live service features. We also got the Needle Climb in the DLC(less said about the Lego DLC the better), which drifters like me spent hours trying to master.
And FH5, aside from the lacking city, is better still. Vastly superior wheel support, much better visuals, hugely improved car sounds, many more widebodies and customisation features, anti-lag, two-step, hugely improved photo mode(finally), Event Lab being one of the best things ever added to any Forza game...
It's alright to fall out of love with a series: it's natural after playing it for a long time. But don't pretend that everyone agrees on this. And don't confuse that boredom with the game itself being worse than previous ones.

I live in the US mid-south, a pretty temperate area pretty similar to what's displayed in-game, snow in the winter, stormy springs, the whole deal. Driving around the Edinburgh countryside just felt natural, whether I was cruising or hauling tail, it just felt right with the rolling hills, fields, and farms. I also do alot of quad riding in back country trails so taking one of the side by sides around the quarry area or anywhere else was, once again, a straight shot a nostalgia. I could never get tired of where I live (Except mosquitoes, ticks, and the humidity) or lived in feeling FH4's world. FH5 just feels so dead and unfamiliar, its no coincidence I spend most of my time in the northern canyon region of the map.

I liked 4, the biggest thing I would say that brought it down was the lego expansion. the racetrack it had *almost* being brooklands was cool, but how much cooler would it have been if it was just the real brooklands but fixed up in the digital world so we could drive it. The lack of a lot of british car culture was quite sad too, some genuinely great and important things missing that still exist in their little niches in the uk, and the fact that the company that made the game is british kinda removes a lot of excuses they may have.
And the roads are so wide that completely ruined the map, and the highlands is represented by 1 hill with 1 road that goes around it entirely. those are kind of important. you should feel like you are on the edge while driving british country roads, even in a stock hatchback, they are so narrow that a widebody aventador would fill the road entirely. imagine if they made a map in japan and the touge roads were 8 cars wide and didnt have hairpins or switchbacks? you might say "that defeats the entire appeal of the touges in japan", well thats the same thing with british country roads.
the final complaint is that the horizon story "british racing green" I think it was called? the purpose of which was to teach about the british car culture and some key cars in it, well, it just got a bunch of stuff blatantly wrong, which again, cant really be excused.

@@elkristof86 you say that, but I think it would cause a shift in racing. how boring is D class? C class? even B sometimes? you just cannot race them on most tracks because theyre so slow and the roads are so wide that every corner is flat out. im not saying all roads have to be so narrow you cant fit down them with some cars, but there needs to be enough and in the places that they should be so that yes, the morgan 3 wheeler is actually "pretty quick".
Remember the top gear lap where the caterham R500 beat the veyron? thats a thing. you cant use a 1500hp supercar everywhere and always be the fastest or have the most fun. It also would make driving those 1500hp supercars themselves more interesting because you would have to be conservative while driving a lot more, not just soaring through the map at 250mph+. The highway and similar "main roads" can be wider, but man, where are the country roads with danger lurking either side that gives you a rush to drive on...

Three things I wish you'd commented on:
    1. Open Progression
    2. Mixer
    3. LaRacer
    1. Open Progression - I know a lot of people consider FH4 to have the weakest progression model in the series, but I love how open it is, and I love the idea of being able to do more than just race in order to progress and level up. Even with FH4, I was irritated that Playground Games still couldn't manage to not make everyone in the game a car nut, but FH4 was close enough to at least giving people the option to focus on other aspects of driving/racing to further incentivize engaging with those aspects of the series.
    2. Mixer - Progression-related, I know, but I really wish you'd mentioned Mixer, even if only as a brief joke. I really don't think I have the heart to obliterate my FH4 save file to start from scratch, as much as I love FH4, as I don't want to see the gaping hole where Mixer would exist. The 24/7 influence streams helped to build out the community a bit more, in my opinion, and I wish Microsoft had not only stuck with Mixer but also built similar functions into other games series.
    3. LaRacer - I know you mentioned stories from a business perspective, but LaRacer was one of my favorite aspects of FH4. Prior to experiencing the LaRacer story and despite already being a huge FH fan, I still came into FH4 with the viewpoint that the driving/racing games scene was just this thing that still paled in comparison to what other genres offered. I know a lot of people found LaRacer to be annoying, but I found her to be sort of an amalgam of the Playground Games team members' personal accounts and memories of their gaming careers, and I came to understand why people could feel every bit as nostalgic about a driving/racing game as I was about some of the games that shaped my own preferences in gaming. I recall 2-3 of these LaRacer segments even causing me to get a bit misty-eyed, which was probably a first for a racing game. (FH5's initial drive also got me.)
Anyway, great video. As someone who was initially really put off by winter, I have to say that I came to really appreciate winter due to FH4's open progression system. I hate how people obsess over times and ranks and whatnot, and I think Playground Games should've simply incentivized playing in every season by keeping seasons separate from one another for leaderboard purposes and encouraging people to find ways to exploit different paths and vehicles to compete better in winter. It's easy to forget FH5 even has seasons, and it's almost criminal how much of a backseat snow has taken in FH5.

    • @bigbuckoramma
      @bigbuckoramma 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

100% agree about LaRacer. It does feel like the byproduct of a conversation that sparked up among employees in the break room over a cup of tea, talking about the first racing game that really hooked them into car culture and racing. And like you, it gave me some pause for reflection on the first time I ever put the Japanese Import of Gran Turismo into my PS1 and hit the power button.
LaRacer was the right amount of nostalgia, blended with the right amount of respect as it paid homage to other racing games that came before Forza.
And let's be honest, one of the best auto phrases in the game was "Game Over YEAAAHHHHH!" 🤣
