  • In this EXCLUSIVE vlog, you'll get to see the Anderton Boat Lift as you've never seen it before! Colin is climbing on top of the Anderton Boat Lift which carries boats between the Trent and Mersey Canal and the River Weaver. Then we'll take narrowboat Silver Fox down the lift on to the River Weaver.
With exclusive access to all areas of the Anderton Boat Lift you'll see exactly how it works, discover it's history, and get to see the lift as you've NEVER seen it before!
Drones are not normally permitted to fly over, or close to, the Anderton Boat Lift. We were given prior permission to capture aerial footage after providing the Canal & River Trust with the appropriate proof of licensing, certification, and liability insurance.

Brilliant, professional video as ever guys. That wasn't a vlog, it was to the standards of a TV documentary and the camera work was just brilliant. Well, well done.
Interesting fact for you - Back in the 1800s, Caissons were metal tanks that surrounded the supports of river bridges that were being built. They were lowered into the water and the water pumped out of them to allow men to work on the river/lake bed. To stop them filling up again, they were sealed at the top and kept pressurised by pumping in air to sufficient pressure to stop the water seeping back in; the workers entering and leaving through an airlock at the top. Staying in the pressurised environment all the working day led to the workers suffering decompression sickness when they came back to normal pressure, otherwise know as the bends. That was the first time that the bends had ever been observed and led, eventually, to the development of the decompression theory that divers still use to keep safe today. The original name of the condition was "Caissons Disease" and that is still occaisionally used when discussing decompression sickness. "The bends" was a nickname for the condition based on the literal bending double of sufferers when they were gripped by pain as the compressed gas they had absorbed came out of solution and spontaneously formed bubbles in the body when they returned to normal pressures too quickly. (All in one sudden drop in those days!)
There you go, that's two minutes you'll never get back again :)

Wonderful to watch. I am from Canada , we also have a lift lock. The Peterborough Lift Lock built in 1904, is a boat lift located on the Trent Canal in the city of Peterborough, Ontario, Canada, and is Lock 21 on the Trent-Severn Waterway. For many years, the lock's dual lifts were the highest hydraulic boat lifts in the world, raising boats 65 ft. Googel it to find out more. Keep up with the adventures guys, and always have fun.

Well done, that was another outstanding production. Did you know that there is a link between those large double helical gears and the Citroen car company? The gears are quieter and more efficient than the straight cut type and the Citroen company used them in their early days. They are the origin of the stylised `double chevron` badge on their cars.

I'm fortunate in having grown up near the Erie canal in Western New York and watching the operation of this historic waterway and knowing some of the people responsible for its operation. I enjoyed the ride on the boat lift. I am always impressed with your video footage. This video was particularly stunning. I know that your have a very deft hand while editing your videos. But, this one confused me. It appeared to be a SINGLE, continuous video. Yet, I wonder if this was filmed on one ride on the lift. There are so many angles and views of the action of the lift, I couldn't help wondering if you rode the lift more than once to get the pictures. If this was the result of only one ride, it says a great deal about your ability to stitch different layers together to create a coherent video.
I was, also, sad that you didn't run the maze in the child's park. I would like to have seen the weights in comparison to one of your heights. Or, to paraphrase a famous canal person "You can't doooo that."

Great footage even better history lesson, why no TV station haven't engaged you both to produce programmes and came up with a title of "Life on The River and Cannels " is beyond me the research you must do has to be time consuming. Imagine you both [ including the dog ] doing a programme similar to Michael Portillo and his journey following Burnell's Railway guild. You could film though the 4 seasons of the boat , great blogs keep them coming gents.

Another great vlog, very informative. Can you imagine how hard it was to build that 150 years ago, that sort of engineering is what made Britain Great.

We have been on this on it’s reopening day, we got stuck half way down, we had to wait around 50 minutes whilst they got it moving again. We all got a round of applause at the bottom. 🤣🤣😎👍🏻

So excellent! Beautifully filmed too. It's a shame about the rusty water bath at the end. I wonder will they find a solution for that.

That...was...AMAZING!! 😍 Colin, I am always (and increasingly) impressed with your "soundtrack" choices. Really, really beautiful touch. And how funny to remark that you are feeling so buzzed that Shaun couldn't get a word in edgewise--like there's ever been a problem with him talking over you (except in "Take 2")! Shaun--I see you. 😍
