yes, since the blockage is mostly made of dust hair and lint mixed with moisture of the condensation creates bad odors and possibly harmful mold...i would say yes, that would be the primary reason...but please make sure that smell isn't kind of "ozone/chemical" smell because that might be a freon leak that can happen due to loose or cracked soldering.
